Some pretty tasty things in this go 'round of the Licorice Pizza mailbox purge. There's a cover of an old Sweet song and the first single from a garage band super group. I'll get right to my pick of the month, which is "Bow Down and Die," from The Almighty Defenders, the aforementioned supergroup. It's a funny thing because when I first read the email, I thought these guys had potential to suck. Wrong I was. Their debut album isn't due until September, but this preview of the collab between the Black Lips, King Kahn, and Mark [...]
Lots of good stuff this fine Friday in July. In the singles section, you'll find brand new mp3s from The Almighty Defenders, Jay Reatard, Julian Plenti, Times New Viking and more, while below that, you'll find remixes of everyone from Bloc Party and Autokratz to Phoenix and La Roux. Then, there's the mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. And, it's all for you! Enjoy! NEW Singles: "Admiral's Doorbell" by Afghan Riders "Bow Down And Die" by The [...]

So about two weeks ago I posted this interview with The Radical Sons in advance of their New York City shows. Well Blogger decided it would be a good post to delete despite me having permission to post the mp3's I did. Well even though I have been diligently saving all of my posts to re-up them once they're taking down I missed this one so it took me a little longer to get back up and I forget what my intro was. Whatever, the band e-mailed me about why it came down and seemed upset that it was taken [...]

While everyone is oohing and aahing over bands of tweens like Tiny Masters of Today or Care Bears on Fire maybe it's time for us all to realize that rock music has been the realm of the teenager for decades. These kids aren't special because they have angst and strap on a guitar, they are part of the way things should be and there are way better bands made of teenagers. One such band, The Radical Sons from St. Louis, have followed the influence of their idols and started to create some truly rocking music. With influences ranging from The [...]
Monday: Ted Leo & the Pharmacists @ Maxwell's 9pm $15 I may have recommended seeing Ted Leo & the Pharmacists on Sunday but let's face it with all the shit weather you probably didn't make the trek to a place in Jersey you've never been to. Well now you can quickly make up for that by seeing Ted & company at the wonderfully intimate Maxwell's! Sounds like a brilliant way to start off your week. Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - "Where Was My Brain" Tuesday: [...]

I'm just today learning about The Radical Sons , a St. Louis band banging it out in the tradition of all the good ones. I'm hearing Julian Casablancas in the vocals and maybe even some Strokes guitars in their sound, but only the '70s NYC punk classics are mentioned on their MySpace site. But the Lower East Side kids should eat this shit up, if anyone comes out to Mercury Lounge next week to see them on the 25th (or Glasslands on the 23rd). Pitchfork has a bit on the band, as [...]
Filled with swagger, fire and promise, St. Louis's great hope, Radical Sons , are gearing up for a mini-tour starting today that takes them from their hometown to our hometown. The dudes'll be sharing the stage with other like-minded luminaries JEFF The Brotherhood (ex-Be Your Own Pet), Pirate Love , GIRLS and more. The group's post-proto-punk (cf. Television influence with less guitar masturbation) EP Throwing Knives is out on the St. Ives imprint July 7. Dates: Jun 18 St. Louis, MO Cicero's w/ JEFF The Brotherhood & Cuban [...]

Who : Dinosaur Jr. Title : Farm Release Date : June 23rd Label : Jagjaguwar Thoughts : Since the turn of the century a lot of bands have been making comebacks, some welcomed, some not so much. Dinosaur Jr. are obviously one of the more welcome returns, especially when you consider how many bands have been aping their style for years [...]

Hey – this is my second mailbox dump this month, not including the things I've posted individually. You can't say I'm not right on top of things! Alongside the something-for-every-taste-bud tracks, there are a few goodies here: Telling on Trixie and Ash are both solid "indie" bands; the songs here are catchy and stuck in my head even after the first listen. The Rest is soothingly creepy. They kind of remind me of a lo-fi Jesus and Mary Chain. My pick of the litter is Radical Sons, out of St. Louis. They sound a little [...]

There are many reasons to be excited about the band Radical Son. They are young, fresh, talented, and most importantly: fun to listen to. When you listen to songs like "I'm So Sick Of The 21st Century" you can't help but see connections to older bands like Sonic Youth & The Velvet Underground. There are flashes of lo-fi garage rock that make these connections no-brainers. The lead singers vocals actually remind me a lot of Julian Casablancas of a little band that we know as the Strokes. The band sounds like they are playing so effortlessly, when in fact they [...]

I could write an essay about this but this song pretty much describes how a lot of us feel right now. Now I'm all about the future, and I think you have to be because it's very easy to live in the safeness of what's already been done. Still, I won't deny that there are some key differences between art now and art pretty much anytime before 1999. Like I said, I could write a thesis on the subject but I'll let the music speak for me on this one. Enjoy. And all those records you [...]
