In this edition: Grand Duchy returns, De La Soul's First Serve, and this week's videos! Grand Duchy to release "Let the People Speak" When Black Francis and his wife, Violet Clark , formed Grand Duchy , few would have guessed the resulting "debut" album would be among his best efforts outside the famed band, The Pixies . On "Petit Fours", Clark's love of synth pop and electronic music won out over Francis' tastes in punk [...]

If you're familiar with Part Time Punks held at The Echo , then you've probably heard British post-punk band The Raincoats once or twice. The Raincoats will be touring again and you can see them perform live at the Echoplex on Tuesday, March 13th. Filed under: Exclusive , The Hit List Getty Images (3) A former guitarist for Titus Andronicus , Amy Klein is a writer, the founder of feminist art collective Permanent Wave and an all-around amazing person. With this week's release of Ani DiFranco's new album, 'Which Side Are You On?' we asked Amy to come up with the best feminist, girl-power anthems of all time. Check out her picks below! [...]

It is no secret that the distribution of music on the Internet has led to a radical re-appraisal of its free-market value. With essentially every piece of music ever recorded obtainable at no cost through a well-planned Google search, the notion of paying $18 for 35 minutes of music has been rendered preposterous. This shift has come at significant financial harm to many artists (frequently lamentable) and record labels (infrequently lamentable), but it has also come with a number of pleasant surprises. The most pleasant of these, of course, is the ever-expanding universe of free and legal music. [...]

Tweet Named after "a multi-coloured pudding" from the Philippines, Halo Halo instantly transported me back to the first time I heard "Typical Girls" by The Slits while stompin' around Indian Trail Junior High School in my fake Payless Doc Martens. However, instead of listening to a band whose output ended before I was over watching The Popples, Halo Halo are just beginning. A trio made up of multi-instrumentalist Rachel on vocals, Jack on percussion, and guitarist/multi-instramentalis t Gill, Halo Halo are [...]
Human Switchboard's Who's Landing in My Hangar? is one of the few tenuously Cleveland connected punk/new wave classics to lack a proper reissues. Bar/None Records thankfully rescues this great album from a future of shitty YouTube vinyl rips. The reissue includes close to everything the band released. A droning John Cale type synth drones over
As previously reported, ATP UK curated by Jeff Mangum has been postponed from December 2011 to March 9-11th, 2012. As a result, there are a few changes to the previously announced lineup, which the festival revealed today. To start, Panda Bear, Tinariwen, Superchunk, Group Inerane, The Mountain Goats, and Colin Stetson are all unable to play the new date and have been removed from the bill. What's more, the festival is still speaking to Fleet Foxes, Sun Ra Arkestra and Micachu And The Shapes and hopes to confirm their participation soon. As [...]

New favorite band OF THE FUCKING YEAR. The Coathangers (not to be confused with the Raincoats , although that would be quite funny) are a 4 piece all girl punk band from Atlanta and before I can even say check them out before Pitchfork turns them into disposable hipster hype, Big P got there before me. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just being bitchy. [The Coathangers - Hurricane] Awesome comment on youtube by the way: " Why are they all fucking beautiful. Fuck you. Fuck you for being so beautiful . [...]

The Raincoats: Odyshape As Kim Gordon has it, these are "ordinary people playing extraordinary music". 1981's Odyshape was the Raincoats' second album, and though it was, technically, emerging from the post-punk period, it was just as much informed by the avant-garde and feminist theory. Guest musicians on Odyshape included Robert Wyatt, Charles Hayward of This Head and Richard Dudanski, all drummers who encouraged the Raincoats to experiment with rhythm. Post-Palmolive, and before Ingrid [...]

I'm going to call it—this is by far the best show I've seen this year, and I've been to a bunch of them I arrived early with a few friends who drove two hours to catch the show. We wanted to get right in front to see the legendary and influential post-punk band The Raincoats. But this line up was jammed with stellar bands, so getting there early was a must. The Raincoats were also joined by Killrockstar's Grass Widow and the Ian Svenonious -fronted spoken word/musical project, Felt [...]

This year - 2011, if you forgot - marks the 20 th anniversary of the release of Nirvana 's Nevermind . As with all such moments, reissues, tributes, and all kinds of analysis and discussion will spring from the well. I don't recall this much fuss when The White Album turned 20. I am not here to fellate Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, or their legacy, nor am I here to kick them in the balls. Let me say for the record that I do like Nirvana. I was just never one of those kids [...]

by Bill Pearis As previously mentioned , Friday (9/16) at the Warsaw is the first date of a short tour for classic postpunk band The Raincoats who just reissued their seminal 1980 album Oddyshape on vinyl. I wrote this a while back : With odd instrumentation, unconventional songwriting and a generally itchy, discordant vibe, the London group's three original albums (1979's self-titled debut [...]

Featuring members of xbxrx, SWAPS, Hawnay Troof, and the Raincoats-it's the dude currently drumming for them-Kit is a Los Angeles outfit that keeps a torch lit for the sunny, abrasive post-punk that dominated the blogosphere a few years ago when bands like No Age and Abe Vigoda were blowing up. Kit's latest album, Invocation , is out now on Upset the Rhythm, and was actually produced by Mr. Phil "Mount Eerie" Elverum. "Out of Ruins" is the latest track to receive the video treatment from this album, and what a video it gets. It's numerous clips of [...]
Official Website | Myspace | Facebook | Twitter Now that Osheaga's over and done with, time to turn our attention to the finest indie music festival our fine city has to offer and that would be Pop Montreal. Already a decade old, this year's shenanigans will go down September 21st to the 25th. To celebrate it's 10th year, Pop [...]

Montreal's equivalent to South by Southwest, Pop Montreal will see 600 acts playing over 50 venues across the city between September 21st and 25th. And because it's the festival's 10th anniversary, one of those 600 acts will be the band formerly known as Shark Attack! , who will play a *free* outdoor show at the place des Festivals of Quartier des Spectacles.
