I've only owned a record player recently, despite a lifetime of musical obsession. It turns out New York City is a really good place to find vinyl. I'm as shocked as you. I'll be posting unearthed treasures here occasionally...when the mood strikes... From the 1994 John Peel Session that was later commercially released as Extended Play , comes this version of the lead track from the British band's 1981 LP Odyshape . They were rubbing slumped shoulders with the alt rock elite then, after [...]
I compiled the 59 minutes and 59 seconds of this week's mix differently than I normally do. With the exception of the one Duffy track I've been playing all week, almost all of the songs are on the oldish side, and many of them date to the way outre millennial era. I was in a hurry leaving the house today and only had time to grab a wallet full of old mix CDs I made seven or eight years ago. There's actually four songs on here from a CD-R I made called 'The Best of 2001 (Jan-March)'. [...]

The Coathangers Genre: Experimental / Punk / Rock From: Atlanta, Georgia United States First featured on the Devil's blog back in July ( for more click here ) Georgia's Coathangers are back with a couple more tracks of their lo-fi ramshackle femi punk and wicked sense of humour (check out 'Nestle In My Boobies' ) for you to sample. Like a [...]
I'm not sure if it's worth distinguishing these tracks considering how all of them are [download or die] worthy...however, I will note that my father loved the Sea Wolf track when I played it driving back from the airport two days ago. Sea Wolf - I Made A Resolution Randy Newman - He Gives Us All His Love The Bicycles - B-B-Bicycles The Cars - Just What I Needed Hot Hot Heat - Oh, Goddamnit [...]

The Raincoats - Fairytale in the Supermarket (from The Raincoats , 1980) - Don't count on others to write a happy ending for you.

A friend of mine mentioned to me yesterday that he had just watched " The Devil and Daniel Johnston " over the weekend. I personally haven't seen the 2005 documentary, but it's something that needs to be added to my Netflix queue after hearing him talk about it. One of the things that he took from the film (aside from Johnston's manic-depressive genius) was not about Johnston specifically, but actually in relation to Kurt Cobain. He went on to say that through Cobain, he had discovered a variety of music that he might not have ever heard [...]
Considering the amount of artists their brief career inspired, and influenced, The Raincoats (1979) debut is an album that criminally goes in and out of print far too often. Rough Trade's 2003 reissue, for example, quickly vanished from record stores years ago, and an Amazon seller presently lists a used copy being sold for [...]
In celebration of the fact that the storm-related blockwide (or more) brownout affecting my neighborhood for the past 24 hours hasn't affected my Internet access, here is a post! I figure posting for the first time in weeks is a good way to pass the time while I wait for everything in my refrigerator to melt and spoil. The Raincoats "Lola" (Kinks cover) For a while there, everyone seemed to want to know my opinion of the NY Post's "Best 100 Cover Songs of All Time" [...]

Last Saturday Indie Mom and I went to see the Decemberists perform at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. The evening was comfortably cool, and we had great seats; in fact we had better seats than actor Adrian Grenier , whom we saw with his date. We'll have some posts about the Decemberists and the opening acts, Andrew Bird and Band of Horses, pretty soon. We are hampered by the fact that Indie Mom took the photos but has no computer at this time to upload them. So this post [...]
CoolTechZone has an article on the psychology of Mac enthusiasts , and why they are overzealous with their love affair for all things Apple. Even though the subject matter this author chooses to explore (computer geeks) might bore you, I suggest you replace the technology words with musicology ones. For example, try substituting "Mac" with...oh, I don't know, "Slint," and "Linux" "OS X" and "AMD" with "Spiderland" "Tweez" and "Untitled EP". You'll get the hang of it after the first few paragraphs, and will find yourself giggling uncontrollably as you draw comparisons between technology fanboys and music fanboys. [...]
If I were to say to you, "we make holes in teeth! We make holes in teeth!", would you know what I was talking about?

Welcome to another edition of "Please Release Me," in which your Idolators request--nay beg --that an out-of-print, delayed or held-up-in-customs album be issued Stateside: Artist: The Raincoats Hometown: London, UK Album: The Raincoats (1979)/ Odyshape (1981)/ Moving (1984)/ Looking In The Shadows (1996) What is it? : The British post-punk foursome The Raincoats put out a string of loopy, gorgeous records in the late '70s and early '80s; Greil Marcus praised the band for "[trashing] every female stereotype [...]
You Tube rewards persistence. You can look and look and look for a magic piece of footage for months, and just when you've given up hope or completely forgotten about your quest, BLAM! So, when I saw this Idolator post yesterday pleading for the re-re-release of the Raincoats catalog, it was all the reminder needed to get back on the hunt for the band's elusive footage. It would be a stretch to say I was handsomely rewarded, but these two versions of "Fairytale in the Supermarket" have a rakish charm. [...]

In a way I'm a bit surprised that a band with the sound of the Raincoats would come out of England and not from Berlin or New York. Minimal and experimental, the vibe of the Raincoats would probably fit in well with some of the scenes in those two areas, while more straightforward punk seemed to be happening at the same time (the Raincoats recorded from 1978 to 1984) in the UK. In turns they
I've taken it upon myself to be at the fore front of US blog reporting about UK pop group, the Long Blondes. Ambitious, I know. So today, when Pitchfork dropped some not entirely new news about the LB's upcoming Rough Trade single, but with added tidbits about b-sides and iTunes availbility, I was not about to take it lying down. Luckily, they neglected to mention that a video for the new track, "Weekend Without Makeup" was completed and available for YouTubage. the Long Blondes - "Weekend [...]
