About 5 years ago, The Rakes released the fantastic 22 Grand Job and their debut album Capture/Release was pretty damn amazing. Their sophomore effort, Ten New Messages was a good follow-up, but in my opinion fell short of expectations, not that it wasn't good, it contains possibly their best song as a burning bright highlight, I'm of course talking about We Danced Together . But "they're no Neutral Milk hotel," I have a hard time with, since the latter band formed long after NMH stopped recording albums. A criticism for sounding like the band that influenced you? It's Blitz! , the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is good. Really good. Easily their best, in my opinion. In fact, good enough to inspire a mix in honour of the word yeah. Yeah is more than just a simple affirmation. Consider it a state of mind. Be like Jim Carrey, say yeah to things. So, the Rakes release the first single from their eagerly-awaited (well, awaited) third album ‘Klang’ next week, and that single has been chosen to be the rather excellent ‘1989’. I’ve listened to the lyrics, and as far as I can gather (but be sure to put me right if I’m wrong) the song sums up the hedonistic post-communism atmosphere in Eastern European capitals after Glasnost and the fall of the USSR.
