About 5 years ago, The Rakes released the fantastic 22 Grand Job and their debut album Capture/Release was pretty damn amazing. Their sophomore effort, Ten New Messages was a good follow-up, but in my opinion fell short of expectations, not that it wasn't good, it contains possibly their best song as a burning bright highlight, I'm of course talking about We Danced Together . This new album, Klang, however is a brilliant example of a band continuing on brilliant form. New single 1989 is amazing, literally, I cannot stop listening to it's intense brilliance. [...]

It’s been five years since London band The Rakes burst onto the music scene, armed with a catalogue of short, sharp post-punk tunes. Indeed, their debut, Capture/Release , was one of 2005’s musical highlights and it seemed they were destined for very big things, which never materialised. Their second album, Ten New Messages received a decidedly lukewarm reaction from critics and fans alike and failed to build on the momentum of their first album. So, could third effort Klang be the album to propel them to big things? Klang was recorded in [...]
The Rakes new album "Klang"; "1989" video London indie rockers The Rakes release their third album " Klang " this week, following 2007's " Ten New Messages ". The album was recorded and produced in a Bauhaus designed ex-Soviet radio station in Berlin. "The London music scene is so dull right now - it's like wading through a swamp of shit. We just wanted to be somewhere more inspiring," said singer Alan Donohoe . "Someone suggested Berlin. It didn't take long for everyone to agree, we packed [...]

I generally try to keep my hands out of what's happening across the pond, but when a release this relevant dropped and it completely went under the radar of both of our UK contributors, I have no choice but to write about it. The Rakes released their third album, Klang , on March 23. It's a pleasurable experience is what it is. The first single from the release is titled "19893 and was released as a 73 a while ago. I've posted it below for your aural and visual pleasure. [...]

Yesterday, I was very excited when I woke up. Why? I'll tell you why. Because I was aware very aware of the release date for the Rakes new album, KLANG. All of my sources told me it was the 23rd of March. Hell, I even got an email from their official mailing list telling me it was out that morning. So I goes over to my favourite record stores, and none of them have it. Fine. But maybe I'll just ask the girl at the counter is she can check for me. She says according to Amazon, I [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: The Rakes – Klang! words: Matt McDonald So here’s the context. A British indie band surfaces in 2005, sounding relatively similar to most other British indie bands surfacing at this time, marked out only by their office-party vibe and their veganism. They release a solid album that documents a fair image of Britain in 2005. Two years later, they release another album and are mercilessly spanked by critic after critic, who claim its mediocrity stems from a sense of joylessness. Rather than disappearing into obscurity [...]

For some reason, I don't fully understand the incessant comparisons between Neutral Milk Hotel and The Decemberists. "They're like Neutral Milk Hotel," I could understand. But "they're no Neutral Milk hotel," I have a hard time with, since the latter band formed long after NMH stopped recording albums. A criticism for sounding like the band that influenced you? This makes no sense. Is it a regional thing? That a band from the pacific northwest shouldn't dare sound like a band from the south? Ah... Is that it? Harrison Hudson! [...]

It's Blitz! , the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is good. Really good. Easily their best, in my opinion. In fact, good enough to inspire a mix in honour of the word yeah. Yeah is more than just a simple affirmation. Consider it a state of mind. Be like Jim Carrey, say yeah to things. I haven't seen the movie, but I assume it resulted in good things and had a happy ending. There's my philosophy for the day. Enjoy. Download Yeah! The Mixtape Here 01 | Yeah Yeah [...]

The Rakes have got a new video. We're pretty happy about that. Remember their excellent album Capture/Release ? We had a crazy little love affair with the track 22 Grand Job . That song always felt like a Guy Ritchie movie, it just set that type of tone. Anyway, back to modern times. New video for new single 1989 has a great dinosaur-infused amusement park stetting, albeit a broken down one. Anyone reminded of Prehistoric Gardens [...]

So, the Rakes release the first single from their eagerly-awaited (well, awaited) third album ‘Klang’ next week, and that single has been chosen to be the rather excellent ‘1989’. I’ve listened to the lyrics, and as far as I can gather (but be sure to put me right if I’m wrong) the song sums up the hedonistic post-communism atmosphere in Eastern European capitals after Glasnost and the fall of the USSR. You can imagine the song being set in Wenceslas Square in Prague, or somewhere in Bratislava or Budapest. Come to think of it, it's probably set in Berlin when [...]
