Here ya go, something for the weekend. It's the March installment of the the Finest Kiss Basementcast. If this is going to become a regular thing, I guess I should get a theme song and some back ground music for the talking parts. A real microphone might be nice too, one of those big foamy ones would be perfect. Maybe I should get some advertisers too. Naah, I kind of like the furnace as my background noise, at least until I sell out. basementcast : download [...]

Here are some recent additions and subtractions to music. Barenaked Ladies minus Steven Page: (Is something... missing?) If you haven't already heard, Steven Page has left the Barenaked Ladies . According to the latest blog post on the band's official site, the remaining four members of the band will continue to tour without him, while he pursues his own projects, and perhaps some theatrical work. Growing up, Steven Page was always the face [...]

What a difference a few days makes. I haven't felt what I'm feeling right now in ages. I drove to work so happy. I made a new CD with three of the best songs of the year so far on and couldn't stop beaming. Thank you to Joe at Music From A Green Window for making me give The Rakes new single a second chance. I had it so loud. Courtesy of 'Hysteric' by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I have a love song to rival 'Maps' and a possible contender for at least the top 5 [...]
I feel like the Rakes got unfortunately lumped in with the also-rans of the British 'band' explosion that popped in 2005. You know, Bloc Party, Maximo Park and such. And people wanted them to be something they weren't. So their precision-perfect, tight and smart brand of Brit-rock went under-appreciated. 1989 is the band's return, and they're not trting to play anyone's trend-games, just doing

The Rakes is a band that I have always had a soft spot for. They were just getting a lot of buzz during my first trip to the UK. Their first album will also act like a snapshot of that trip. Their second album "Ten New Messages" really only had two memorable songs. "1989" is the first taste we have off their third album "Klang." "1989" goes back to what made the band so lovable back all those years ago. The song is driven out by a big time bass that sets up Alan Donohoe's half talking/singing. It is a [...]

The Rakes é uma banda excelente de indie rock londrino. O quarteto lançou o primeiro disco em 2005, chamado "Capture/Release", de que eu gosto bastante. Depois veio o "Ten New Messages", com destaque para as faixas "We Danced Together" e "The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect".
Commenta »

ZACH THAT: I really liked that time in my life when my iPod had a constant flow of The Cribs, The Futureheads, and The Rakes. Well, good news, The Rakes are back with a pretty great new release: Klang! Here is my favorite track off the LP, 1989. Enjoy and remember to support bands by going to shows/buying their records if you like what you hear. Enjoy: -> The Rakes - 1989 <- Album due out in March. [...]

P A R T I E S WEEKEND TRACK STACKER (16th Feb) words: Jamie Milton This last week's been a bit of a tiresome one, not FML worthy but still... Although I (eventually) booked tickets to Benicassim festival, I also missed out on two gigs which I was set on going to. One I was out of town for, the other I merely forgot about. The rest of the week has been [...]

I never really got into The Rakes and I'm not particularly sure why. They came about in that great year of British indie rock with Bloc Party, Futureheads, Maximo Park and all the rest but my awareness of them somehow got affected and I never heard the first album. News of their new album therefore, you might think, wouldn't excite me that much, but after being sent a song off of Klang , "The Light From Your Mac", my ears have pricked up considerably. Alan Donohoe's deep, drawling vocals weave their way all over the top of [...]

I realise all has been quiet around these parts for a while. But I always suppose that Pop Cultureddd is not an outlet for personal crises' and a journal of my thoughts. But my desire for writing, experiencing, listening, chatting shit about and generally centering my life around music again has been restored. Last night I, with my hottie on my arm, went to see The Rakes at Inside Out in Darlington, hosted by the clubnight Amplified. I'd never been to a gig in Darlington and was riddled with doubts about what to expect. [...]

I never used to bother much with support bands because they never seemed much good but these days, almost everyone we see has something going for them, as do tonight's Official Secrets Act, a four-piece from North London. That said I can't quite make my mind up about lead singer Tom Charge Burke, who looks a little spaced out in a Pete Doherty sort of way, oh dear, so I'm sure he'll be a star. Meanwhile his bass player looks like a refugee from Adam and the Ants with his war paint splashed across his face and [...]
