Yet another young UK producer is emerging from the increasingly apparent club scene of England. Although signing with Argentinian label Rationalism, which has seen records from Mild Bang, Brothers Vibe and Wally Stryk in the last year, [Aura] delivers a record that draws influence from Chicago, Detroit & UK house music. If that's not enough to whet the appetite, remixes come courtesy of Justin Drake and a player in one of the many Detroit techno movements, Terrence Dixon. Splitting Atoms relies on a trusty old drum machine that is no surprise in this genre, but his genius use [...]
I opened my computer this morning and checked my RSS reader. To me, it's like reading the newspaper. I glance at the headlines that don't interest me, read fully the stories that do. But today, I glanced at one headline and rather than moving on to the next, I turned away from the screen completely. [...]
Stripmines Sympathy Rations EP (Sorry State) The first song and title track on Stripmines' Sympathy Rations EP fuses hardcore and thrash into a powerful piece of work. Until the 7-inch's last track, "Death Threat," it's pretty much unmatched. The middle of the EP is nice and strong, but nothing really makes them stand ...

Just another Wild Weekend , and the beat goes on. Here's edition #51, bringing you rock from Detroit, lofi psychedelica from Brooklyn and roots reggae from the island. And we dig up the unjustly forgotten Jerry Riopelle. Get wild or get even. Saint Julian Cope's been busy again, this time compiling an inspiring 38 song list - with fitting over the top commentary of course - of Electrifying Edisonian Rock 'n' Roll from sixties and seventies Detroit. Which doesn't omit certified greats like the Stooges and the [...]
Here at Platform we receive our fair share of angry comments and moody emails, but no one's got anything on this guy when it comes to being disliked by people with computers.
Since I did pretty good on exclusives last year—Dengue Fever/Chicha Libre split, Sonic Youth/Beck split and This LP Crashes Hard Drives, among others—I thought I would post my shortlist of 2010 Record Store Day exclusives that I'll be looking for early Saturday morning. The full list is here if you wanna look, and if I [...]

The Rationals are the most important early Detriot/Ann Arbor group. Although they only had a few huge regional hits, they were highly influential on the Detriot/Ann Arbor club scene and their music has aged gracefully. Maybe not the first rock n roll group to hail from the Mid West region but certainly one of the best, The Rationals had a unique garage/teenbeat sound early on; eventually they would take a drastic left turn into hard soul and heavy Detriot rock n roll during the late 60s. In the summer of 2009 Big Beat reissued all the group's early singles and outtakes on [...]

The rationalists or the religious fanatics?

'I Need You' first appeared as the b-side of The Kinks ' 1965 single 'See My Friends' . A proto-punk garage band belter of a track, it starts of with some nifty Dandy Dave Davis feedback and continues kicking and screaming it's way through some clattering drum breaks, decent 'aaah-aaah' backing vocals and the obligatory screaming guitar solo before ending in exactly the same fashion as 'All Day And All Of The Night' . These days you can get it as one of the extra tracks on the CD reissue of 'Kinda Kinks', or [...]
