The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. Heard Boston band The Real Kids' 1977 punk-pop classic "All Kindsa Girls" the other day and wanted to get it onto my blog - if you haven't heard it, you should ! Rock it below! From Filmthreat : "Led by singer/songwriter John Felice, the Real Kids exploded onto the Boston club scene playing long-forgotten tunes from the '50s by the likes of Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly. As well as Felice's dazzling, punky originals such as "Solid Gold (Thru and Thru)", "Taxi Boys", "Just Like Darts" and the classic anthem [...]

CHAPITRE 1 : L'ÂGE D'OR Il n'y a pas si longtemps, j'étais rennais.

I knew someone would come through with a fabulous follow-up to Dance Crazes That Never Caught On. Actually, I knew it would be Yetsko. Welcome to Undiscovered Dance Crazes. Let's get down: Traveling Wilburys - Wilbury Twist This dance sounds totally hard but totally worth it. And if you know nothing about the Wilburys, try and pick out the vocals of what are surely some of your favorite rock and roll stars. Hasil Adkins - Chicken Walk [...]

I was playing that great Real Kids debut just now and found myself wondering about the current whereabouts of the band members. Bassist Alpo Paulino died two years ago, so that one´s easy, but what´s become of drummer Howard Ferguson, guitarist Billy Borgioli and especially frontman John Felice? Are they pumping gas somewhere in Jersey, having a ball in their native Boston or are they down and out somewhere in the Bowery? Are they still playing music even? I hope someone will be able to fill me in, because that selftitled album from early ´78 is a nearly forgotten gem that´s [...]

Since my record player doesn't leave the living room, this is the closest thing to portability that 45s have ever achieved. Norton Records is an independent NYC label run by two musicians ( Miriam Linna , one-time drummer for The Cramps, and her husband Billy Miller). They specialize in unearthing raw & authentic music -- like retro punk, rockabilly, garage rock and old R&B -- and releasing it on vinyl. They've just assembled forty-five 45s from their rad collection, available for the first time ever as a digital release. The quality of [...]
"We've had our differences, Tom, but you have my utmost respect." -- Scratchy Record, giving it up to his old buddy "I think I need to bring you like a schmata or something to wipe up with there." -- Laura Cantrell, looking for an old cloth to remove the sweat from Tom's brow "You get to blend things at Thomas Sweet's!" -- Tom on the Hub City's frozen mash-ups "It's like midnight basketball for the 21st Century. It keeps kids off the street." -- [...]
