When it rains, it pours. So… it's almost 1:00 am and I figured that I might as well keep going. Right now, Autumn is in Europe and I believe she gets back to the States on Monday. Before her arrival, I wanted to post a new mix and get some of your thoughts. FYI - Some of the songs in this mix are from prior posts. Here's to Autumn's safe trip back home! We've all missed you! I first discovered The Red Romance (TRR) last January when I was setting up my SXSW schedule which required combing through over 1,000 band mp3 submissions. Some acts were penciled in on the possibility of potential, but TRR's slot was entered in permanent magic marker the minute I heard the hooky and sharp pop orgasm that was TRR's submission, "Don't Cry." Live, as I stated in my SXSW review , they didn't disappoint: ...full of poppy beauty. I thought Death Cab-cum-New Order perhaps). The playing was tight, you could tell they'd put the time [...]
Taking cues from the likes of The Strokes, The Cure, Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, and more, New York City's The Red Romance dishes out synth-heavy indie guitar-pop that often sounds more like The Killers than The Killers do (but with less pretense). The band contains former members of Ambulance LTD but it isn't that "ex-members" tag that is gonna get The Red Romance noticed, it's the songs. Their formula is really simple; drums, bass, guitars and a bunch of synths that hearken back to the catchy-as-hell radio pop of the [...]

Good lord. Where do I even begin? There is so much happening this weekend in the region, it'll be hard NOT to see a show. Big names, local acts, one nighters, two cities, you want it, you got it. There are quite a few bands doing the I-95 two-step this weekend. In support of their latest release with the main players back, that other band from Athens, The B-52's are doing a two-fer Friday in Philly with an XPN Free at Noon and then a regular set later that night at [...]

When members Matthew Dublin (guitar) and Darren Beckett (drums) (both formerly of Ambulance, LTD. ) grew tired of playing for everyone but themselves, they decided to chuck it all in for something new--well sort of. Their splashy guitar-pop and synth-keyboard sound is reminiscent of '90s Brit-pop, but it also has the romantic pop-feeling of the soul and shoulder-baring '80s ( "It's true romance when we touch, t-touch" - You're So Cold ). And taking their inspiration from the likes of Roxy Music all the way down to The Smiths, and The Simple [...]
As I mentioned before, I recently returned from the yearly music portion of SXSW 2008 in Austin, TX. The plan to go had been in the works for a few years now (it isn't a cheap couple of days) but this year, I'm happy to say I finally got my ass on a plane. As there's day parties and night performances I saw A LOT of music over the 6 days I was there. But as you'll read, it was well worth it.

I need to get the fuck out of town edition : Life's been a little strange lately. Energy is incredibly hard to come by these days. I don't find myself as motivated to update the site as often as I normally do. Winter has taken its toll I guess. Ever find yourself laying around listening to Catherine Wheel records 'til you finally shut your eyes in the cupboard?! That's where I'm at and I can't say I plan to stay there any longer. I'm taking a few days off and traveling out of state with friends this weekend. [...]

I finally got back to one of my favorite places in DC, Black Cat , for a stellar lineup that did not disappoint. On Friday night, I saw Telograph's CD release show that included opening sets from The Sketches and The Red Romance. The Red Romance The first band was the only one from out of town, NYC's The Red Romance . These talented indie rockers warmed up the crowd magnificently. I was lucky enough to get a copy of their EP after the [...]

It's the weekend and yes, Virgin Fest is happening. However, there are several other shows as well. So if you don't want to roast with a bunch of sweaty people all day, you do have options. 1990s On Friday, you have a great show at Rock & Roll Hotel . 1990s are in town with The Red Romance and local favorites Telograph . The Sketches will [...]

Here on the island, the nighttime hits like a clap of thunder. So, as soon as the sun turns out the lights I can disrobe from the dingy blue scrubs and put on the black cat cloak to head out into the veiled musical seductions of New York City. After wading through all the soledad brothers, snapin' bull whips, bear-towers & gypsy fortune tellers you'll come across some of the best small scale music venues in the country (Mercury Lounge, Pianos, Cake Shop, Knitting Factory, Tonic, Irving Plaza & Joe's Pub). Through the past dusty year, I [...]
