By Alex Brenner Although I must say 2012 has been pretty good musically so far, I always find myself digging up some older records. When I say older I'm talking about late 902s and up, not the classics. Talking with fellow A-Lister Rube, the other night we did a little reminiscing and it got me thinking about some great records of the past. The ones where you say "Oh man, I have not heard that in forever!" I do listen to tons of new music too, however, these are some you may have forgotten about or [...]

This week, the first of hundreds of The Walt Disney Studios movies from Disney, Disney·Pixar and DreamWorks Studios are coming to YouTube. These titles join thousands of full-length feature films from major Hollywood studios that already are available to rent at YouTube.com/movies . If you are a fan of animated movies, You Tube has the beloved animated classic, Alice in Wonderland and the newly envisioned Winnie the Pooh. Love Disney Pixar? You can find hits like Cars and Cars 2 all in one place. Up for a little bit of adventure? All four [...]
The album cover of The Rentals ' Seven More Minutes describes the music and mood best. We see a blurry view of a group a little ways up the road, giving off the impression of a drunken observer's point of view. Someone not too familiar with the language or the culture of the street he or she travels on, but who is at once intrigued and taken by it. The evening looks as though it'll last forever, and maybe it will for this person. The observer will eventually pass out, sleep through the day, and wake up [...]
Photo Courtesy of Megan Baumgarten Moog-driven melodies, male and female vocals and a definitive sound that is part Pixies, part Weezer, The Rentals are a blast from the past that contributed to the power pop sounds of the '90s. Comprised of Matt Sharp (who, coincidentally was the former bass player of Weezer), Jamie Blake (guitar, vocals), Lauren Chipman (viola, vocals) and Dan Joeright (drums), The Rentals had broken up, but are now up and running again, with their latest album, Resilience . During the 1990s alternative rock was moving in many [...]
I want to make this perfectly clear, right from the get-go: The Rentals's 1995 debut, Return of the Rentals , is a small masterpiece of power pop. It's a record that easily stands on its own, to the point that its utterly unavoidable association with the early releases of bandleader Matt Sharp's other band--you know, the one with the songs about Buddy Holly and sweaters and butterflies--is very much a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's really too bad that Return of the Rentals has never been allowed to exist by itself--you really can't even talk [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Megan Baumgarten Matt Sharp gave a year of his life to 'Songs About Time,' an ambitious multimedia endeavor that he and a small army of artists -- including filmmakers, editors, musicians and members of his on-again, off-again band, the Rentals -- undertook in 2009. Now, the singer, songwriter and former Weezer bassist is using a rarely heard musical portion of [...]

This week's releases don't nearly compete in sheer numbers to last week's, but it still is a pretty damn good week. Our favorite may just be Jason Forrest 's new album, The Everything (pictured). However, that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Sade gets a greatest hits album, The Clash , The Sex Pistols , and The Damned get a collective tribute album, and even The Blind Boys of Alabama return with a new album. It's an interesting week, with The Rentals going [...]
In an effort to help sustain awareness of the recent devastation in Japan and to help raise money for its relief efforts The Rentals have teamed up with the American Red Cross – Los Angeles Region and Ernest Jenning Record Co. to announce the release of Resilience, an album featuring ...
Before everybody got a music blog, the best place to get free advice and free samples of what you should be loading into your DiscMan was e-commerce sites. There is no way that I could ever recall how many great gems found my headphones thanks to 30 second samples and Amazon recommends. And there were also thoughtful album reviews attached. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of times where I was lead astray but I think I ended up with winners far more than the few times I "add to cart"ed Limp Bizkit understudies. While there are [...]
Boston power pop band The Cinnamon Fuzz made their NYC debut last week with an early morning show at Arlene's Grocery. (These post-midnight start times are going to kill me one day.) The band played a strong set consisting of "80's new-wave" sounding originals from their debut EP "Cruise of the Century" along with a well chosen Prince cover. The Cinnamon Fuzz just released their debut CD as a pay-what-you-will download on Bandcamp and the disc captures some of the best elements of 80's new wave. The five tracks [...]
A couple years ago The Rentals reformed and started making music again. In case you may not know, The Rentals are fronted by Matt Sharp, who was the bassist for Weezer when they were making records like The Blue Album and Pinkerton . They released their Moog-drenched first album, The Return of the Rentals, in 1995 between Blue and Pinkerton , and didn't release a follow-up until 1999's Seven More Minutes . From then until 2007 all was pretty much silent on the Rentals front. Then in [...]
So the other day I wrote about my recent Weezer binge , and as part of that I started down this rabbit-hole of all things mid-nineties and Weezer - which of course included the Rentals. I not only dusted off the old favorites, but caught up on their impromptu reformation last year and the fantastic Songs About Time that came out of it (look for a post on that soon) - it's been a blast. Well Sara Radle was a part of that recent Rentals-revival, as Matt Sharp asked the Texas-based musician to [...]

You've likely heard Sara Radle , if not a few years back in the last incarnation of the Rentals then recently as the distaff vocalist in the L.A. indie-pop outfit Walking Sleep . Her solo career, three releases strong before she moved to L.A. from her native Texas in 2005, displays an affection for folk-flavored power-pop and girl-group stylings with orchestral sweep, and, as a diarist/storyteller, Radle falls somewhere in between Jenny Lewis and Juliana Hatfield. Her forthcoming album," Four" (due Sept. 14), includes contributions from, among others, ex-Le Switch violist Maria DeLuca and Walking Sleep [...]

For the past week, I've been trying to wake myself up before the sun rises so I can go for a brisk morning jog. You can probably guess that for the past week, I've failed at every attempt. Oh, I wake up when it's still dark... but I just can't seem to pull myself out of bed because it's SO cozy underneath the covers. So I fall back asleep and tell myself to try again tomorrow. I can't recall when I last witnessed a sunrise. I can't recall when I last went for a jog. [...]
