photo by Scott Alario ALBUM REVIEW: Somewhere in-between a white trash hero and flippant grandpa boy is what indie folkster John McCauley has been repainting. Deer Tick is the story of American Gothic recovering from a binge. If the Deervana stunt is any evidence. He's literally wearing and proud of his choice of flannel rock. I've always been a fan of the music coming out of Providence RI, it's always a little dark and pleasantly seedy. I think they have more Go Go Bars per square mile in their city limits juxtaposed against [...]
On Wednesday night at New York City's Bowery Electric, Gorman Bechard screened his exceptional Replacements documentary Color Me Obsessed , which showcases the cult fandom surrounding the Minneapolis legends. However, following the screening, the venue hosted a tribute concert to the band; not surprisingly, there were a few guests. Locals to the area, The Hold Steady's Craig Finn and Titus Andronicus' Patrick Stickles came out to perform a sloppy, sloppy, sloppy version of the infamous Mats anthem, "Bastards of Young". To make it even more special, another NYC local joined them, the song's producer himself, Tommy Ramone. [...]
Photo by Philip Cosores Part of the fallout of Amy Klein leaving Titus Andronicus has been Patrick Stickles becoming a massive tweeter, seeming to post constantly and with some pretty cool information and videos. Below is a cover of The Replacements performed by the frontman last night at the Bowery Electric. Check out "Sixteen Blue" below.
Craig Finn, Tad Kubler & friends @ Bowery Electric last night Though Brian Fallon cancelled, there was still plenty of talent to go around at last night's 1st-of- three BrooklynVegan-sponsored Replacements tribute shows at Bowery Electric. It's hard to put together a better rock n'roll resume than that of Tommy Stinson's. After helping form The Replacements at the ripe age of twelve years old, Stinson served as the sole bass player of the band until its ultimate demise in 1991. Since then, Stinson has worked on various projects and-perhaps most notably-he has been holding down bass duties for the ever-mercurial Guns N' Roses. Stinson also tours and records with alt-rock vets, and fellow Minnesotans, Soul Asylum. This past summer, Stinson recorded a solo album chocked full of alt-twang power pop titled One Man [...]
Divine Providence may not be Deer Tick's Mona Lisa or magnum opus—personally, I'm still partial to War Elephant and Born On Flag Day —but it's still a hell of a record. For the past 7 or so years, the John McCauley-fronted Providence band have been building a loyal and increasingly large fan base around rabid, fearsome, and often unpredictable liveshows. Divine Providence is the band's first attempt at capturing that raw energy on record. The first time I saw Deer Tick live was at a free show in Portland. The band [...]
Now this is a protest song featuring all sorts of riot mayhem, police and anonymous action by the band Atari Teenage Riot . ATR wants you to lip sync to this tune and film yourself doing it with a black flag in the background. No not Rollin's and Ginn's Black Flag logo. A solid black one like the illustration above. A sure fire way of getting on a watch list so be sure to wear a mask with the mouth cut-out at least. Make sure to look angry and sinister! Atari Teenage [...]
