The Rest is a Canadian septet hailing from Hamilton, ONT , and they're happy to oblige your need for lit-pop, stringing together enough adjectives and synonyms to make their English teachers glow. It's musical magnetic poetry. Lyrics, violins, guitars, pianos are all thrown into the mix. Their music holds the promise of something great, but it starts as a whisper – speak too loudly and you'll miss it. Call someone over to hear it, and you'll both miss it. Listen harder. Everything you love about music is right in there. And they make it work well. [...]

Queue me fawning over an album cover again. Nothing really explains why I like certain album covers, but I really do like the one for Hamilton Ontario's The Rest's upcoming second album Everyone All at Once . And if the music is anything like the cover, it's sure to be great. From what I've heard, it will be. The song I have here, 'Apples and Allergies' builds and builds into brilliance, well, from, brilliance. (Far too many commas there!) Tracklist: 1. Coughing Blood / Fresh Mountain Air 2. Modern Time Travel (Necessities) 3. Sheep In [...]
While somewhere towards the end of a first listen to Everyone All At Once, The Rest`s follow up to the wonderful Atlantis, Oh Our Saviour` album (I must admit, it was an frequently interrupted experience) I had that annoying feeling of almost missing the point or unconsciously losing the plot. Fast forward to the second spin, The Rest are now suddenly understated in their element, working within full flow, interlocked and bathed in glorious stereo. Lead Singer Adam Bentley has a voice very similar to Tom [...]
The Rest's most recent offering is far more dramatic, melodic, and immense then their previous record, Atlantis, Oh Our Saviour . Adam Bentley's voice is mellower, more distant, more thoughtful, and more accurate; the acoustics and one-off guitars and thick, saucy cymbals remain consistent, but even here is a lurking, lonely edge, one of functional desperation and oppressive shadow. Everyone All At Once is an album wrote in isolation and you can feel that solitude even after one listen. Lead vocalist Adam Bentley took the time to answer this week's Kuestionnaire [...]

I had never heard of the The Rest , but I'm glad their upcoming sophomore release, Everyone All At Once , found it's way to my inbox. An album composed of dreamy and melancholic pop songs, perfectly laced with just the right amount of falsetto, you float from song to song, unable to ignore the hypnotizing effect it has on you. Then, in an instant, it's all over. Leaving you with that yearning feeling you get when you have been abruptly woken from a great dream that has seamlessly carried you through the night. Fortunately, [...]
So, I got fired today; I guess there really is an economical depression... I'm still in a state of denial, of course, as I don't want to think of a load of issues: how to get a new job, what I actually learned from the old job, was I really happy there, leaving friends behind, tending to my injured ego and much, much more that I don't think about right now. I spent almost 3 years there, which turned out to be a significant period in my life. Moving on. I planned to write a great review for [...]

"Could've been the gravy on Thanksgiving Day" I love that line from "Phonetically, Phonetically" by Hamilton, Ontario's The Rest . Their second album, Everyone All At Once is coming out in April. I highly, highly recommend it. There isn't a single track on this album that I don't like, which is something I can't even say for most of my favorite major-label artists. Throw in a little shoegaze, indie pop, indie rock, and just downright great songwriting and you've got what could be (and IMO should be) [...]

Terje Bakke "Toulon (Original Mix)" Alt. [...]

Raphael Saadiq's recent winter release, The Way I See It, is as close to a nostalgic old soul road trip as you can get. Not wanting to retrofit an established sound, Saddiq just makes great sound even better. He'll be touring for the entire month of March; should be a show well worth the admission. mp3: Let's Take A Walk Raphael Saadiq: Website • MySpace [...]

The Rest spent the last year and a half writing and recording their second album Everyone All At Once . From drunken nights out in the wilderness to drunken nights in dark basements of the city, these guys ended up making some beautiful music out of what sounds like a pretty isolated lifestyle. I like all kinds of music, including some sloppy ass noise rock, but The Rest has made an album full of carefully placed sounds. Every pluck of a string or crack of a drum sounds completely deliberate, which makes for some really good songs that [...]

Every now and then an album comes out that is truly unique; completely fresh and totally unlike anything you've ever heard before. Everyone All At Once by Canadian band The Rest is certainly not one of those records. It's full of sounds and textures that have already been made by a plethora of other bands (I shan't be so crass as to list them here: the joy of being an mp3 blog is that you can hear the music for yourselves). What this record is, however, is very, very good indeed. While [...]

Het tweede album van The Rest, Everyone All At Once, komt pas uit in april. MP3: The Rest - Phonetically, Phonetically [...]

Tutto si fonde, in dischi come "Everyone All At Once".

You know how everyone's in search of the next Arcade Fire? And you know how the next brilliant, unheralded Canadian band that puts out the next gobstopping album teeming with lilypads of frog-in-throat tunes will always be hailed as the next Arcade Fire? And you know how if justice reigns in the world, The Rest just might be the next Arcade Fire? I totally feel it. And so, whenever I hear someone ask me for my thoughts on the next Arcade Fire, that in-bred spirit of selflessness and generosity automatically triggers within, and I have no [...]

You Should Know Another good Canadian band. Go figure. For the songs on their new album Everyone All At Once , Hamilton, Ontario's The Rest got their Bon Iver on (not like Justin Vernon was the first to write songs in isolation, but you catch my drift). The band drove away from the city, bringing the basic necessities: food, clothes, liquor, and instruments. Amidst the tranquility of a lake and the forest, the band wrote songs until the sunset each day. Everyone All At Once [...]
Ontario's the Rest is a choice soundtrack for this February chill. With some well developed melodies and song structures, the band manages to stay catchy without an obvious adherence to the pop song structure. It would be hard to confine these six Canadians into anything, really. They pull together a fantastic show of orchestral pop without even a blink. The group is fronted by a familiar face to the Needle Drop: Adam Bently. We've reviewed Adam's other project, Allegories ; and even though the two acts have a lot in common, the Rest toys with [...]

Classic Pick : Nas (NYC) Illmatic ... with all the buzz (read: commercials) about the new movie about Biggie, it made me want to pull out all my old rap albums and, for my money, this one is the best. Most of the time my biggest beef with rap albums are that I never want to listen to them front to back, but this one... every track is awesome. and now all the sissy stuff... #5 The Rest (Hamilton, On) Everything All At [...]
I spent the morning listening to the soon-to-be released sophomore album Everything All At Once from the Canadian group The Rest. "Walk on Water (Auspicious Beginnings)" was enough reason for me to instantly search for the closest tour date to Oklahoma. It has a driving almost military ...
