This site aims to emphasize newer releases, many of which have not been released yet. Several times though, I feel an artist is so criminally under-exposed and relevant to today's scene that a feature just begs to come out. One of 20102s most talked-about albums was Twin Shadow's Forget, a wonderful hybrid of post-punk and [...]

As you may have heard, this past weekend, Turntable Kitchen, graffEats and FoxconSox hosted a series of underground supper clubs titled "Covers" :: a dinner of culinary and musical tribute :: for the Noise Pop Festival. For Turntable Kitchen, it was our first ever physical "real world" event. Here was the concept: the chefs from [...]
In 2006 it seemed like Matthew Adam Hart would soon reach prolific status. Hart's flurry of successful remixes and the release of The Russian Futurists' '05 gem, Our Thickness, suggested that he could become the next Matthew Herbert of sorts, a musical entrepreneur with refined innovation even beyond his specialized niche of electronica. Our Thickness [...]

The Robot Ate Me - "Apricot Tea" MP3/download The Robot Ate Me - "What Will Come to Pass" MP3/download (song randomly recorded in Egen, Hungary; cool!) The Robot Ate Me - "Jesus and Hitler" MP3/download I've been ruminating a lot on my transformation - made during the time so many turn to indie sounds: the [...]

[ We also have an update on a few things you should be listening to, provided by the other Matthew, you know - the cool one. ] Right, okay. I think I had been expected to write a personal account of my first experience of Homegame, but well... this ain't it. Instead I think I'm going to be a bit of a snob and slap-dash some 'stuff that should be here yet isn't'. I only just realised how 'big' this blog has become. I mean, after Marcus Mumford said it was the [...]
![My band history in Spokane, Pullman, Glens Falls and Fort Collins [Curiosities #31]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2345775_lg.jpg)
I've been in several bands. Scratch that, millions of bands. I never planned on blogging about it but it's interesting to chart the changes and friends that came and went over the years as I moved around and broke up/started new outfits. Lemme see if I can name them all, in order: Demolish (sixth-grade project with one Matt Willims , who moved on to KICK ASS in Smash Velvet and Bullet Club in Seattle; he's [...]

This essay has nothing to do with Steve Perry, '80s sleeve-logo shirts or Journey, but what the hell I say ... [ Check out Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's set at SXSW 2004 above!!! ] OK, so it's obvious: I'm all out of sorts today, as I have several grad-school papers due and fatherly duties I just can't shirk. I was GOING to re-print a review I wrote of Woelv 's Tout Seul Dans La Foret En Plein Jour, Avez-Vour Peur? and append pictures [...]

What a decade it's been. 2004 was my first year in the so-called Real World ; jobs, car payments, instability everywhere. Things weren't all happy and seemingly upbeat like the mid 90s. After eight months in Seattle, I found myself unemployed and decided it was time for more education. I moved to the greater Portland area and began prep to enter a Masters in Business Administration program, taking night classes at WSU Vancouver and making a frequent trip out to Pullman, where I'd soon attend graduate school. The overall instability and open-your-eyes wake-up calls [...]

"Only he who can view his own past as an abortion sprung from compulsion and need can use it to full advantage in the present. For what one has lived is at best comparable to a beautiful statue which has had all its limbs knocked off in transit, and now yields nothing but the precious block out of which the image of one's future must be hewn." -Walter Benjamin The Robot Ate Me - Jesus and Hitler

[ please don't drink and drive ] The week is SXSW, St. Patrick's Day and Spring Break, which are three huge reasons to what? Road trip , or as I like to say, Bro Trip. When the night sets in, drivers on the road wear thin, your pals pass out and you're battling drowsiness, a great playlist is key towards making it another hundred miles or so. This week's Flashback! Party Sequence is dedicated to the drivers traversing new territory this week. Good luck, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. To start [...]

So, Valentine's Day has come again. You know that all over the world men, women and, especially, teenage boys are going to be dedicating "Creep", "Hallelujah" and uhm... "I Will Always Love You" to their loved ones. Leonard Cohen, Bright Eyes, and Brian Adams, Death Cab for Cutie, Magnetic Fields, and The Beatles will be heard on stereos, ipods and gramophones (for the old-school) all day long. If you don't want to bore your boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husb and/crush with the same ol' same ol' here are some lo-fi and possibly less known songs that are begging to be dedicated to someone, [...]

I know this is rather late, but for those who don't know Ryland Bouchard will no longer perform under the moniker The Robot Ate Me. I saw him a few months ago play in SB and I am incredibly happy that I did. His live shows are interactive art pieces that have to be experienced to be believed. His albums range from quiet, tender and intimate to wondrous, strange, and experimental. Here is a farewell letter from Ryland himself: "Hi, I'm somewhere in New York state, eventually driving back home to Oregon. I've been traveling [...]

It's been a while since I've posted a mixtape, but I thought it prudent to pass this along; seeing as it rained today for the first time in a long while, I find myself pulled to songs of this grouping: fleeting, caught, and residual (to be obscure). 01 ::: Panda Bear - Bros (edit) 02 ::: Gang Gang Dance - Egowar 03 ::: Mixel Pixel - You're The Kind of Girl 04 ::: Bonobo - Change Down / The Sugar Rhyme 05 ::: Broken Social [...]

This isn't exactly an update on music or the buzzworthy news that constantly surrounds it, more of a friendly FYI. I'm heading out the door and driving to FL for a family vacation - the first in years. That being said, I'm not sure where the nearest Starbucks/nifty-place-with-fre e-WiFi will be since our house is lacking an entry ramp to the information highway. So, if you don't hear from me for an extended period of time over the next week - just remember that I'll be devoting hours of my leisurely days thinking up a [...]
