We're desperately cramming in as much as we can this month - new stuff, our Twelve Days of Christmas feature, festive tunes, and shortly our Best Of The Year lists and guest posts. Consequently, all these tunes are deserving of more time and more space than we're giving them in this post, but rest assured there is a veritable feast of musical delights to get your ears around - dive in. Self-professed psychedelic cavemen, pounding out their primitive songs hastily in the garage, Thee American Revolution bathes in the fuzz of the proceedings and have filled their debut [...]

Without question, the release that most 'indie' and alternative rock fans are talking about this week is the new album from The Black Keys. The duo is on quite a ride right now which always makes us worry a little bit. There is something about when a band gets too popular that really does detract [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Laura Marling FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9th Laura Marling 's initial musical success wasn't so much an option as it was a way of life. Raised in the English countryside by a music teacher, it was evident early on that Marling's innate talent would inevitably guide her in the direction of folk music. By the age of 20, Marling had produced two well-recognized full-length albums and had toured with fellow Brit-folk stars, Noah And The Whale and Mumford And Sons. Now, only a year later, she's released another album, A Creature I [...]

Like many reunion albums, Barfly has traces of what made the original band great. Like too many reunion albums, it doesn't have the one element that would have the reunion extraordinary. When assessing the new reunion album by Rocket from the Tombs, it's hard not to wonder what to make of it. This is a reunion by one of the most simultaneously legendary yet unheard bands in music, one whose influence ranges far and wide yet one that was never able to record a real studio album in its classic incarnation. Should listeners just be grateful to [...]

David Thomas e Peter Laughner (R.I.P.) andarono poi a formare [...]

To celebrate our downloads working again we thought we would re-post our best of the month mix from October - more than 20 great tracks selected from our October posts and six new ones too. This time you can download and dive in. Download The Minks – Araby mp3 (from Araby 7″) Endearingly gloomy slice of indie-pop. Download The Bloody Hollies – Dirty Sex mp3 (from Yours Until The Bitter End) The dark side of raw garage punk with touches of organ, violin and xylophone. Download Bare Bones – Hope [...]
From the opening lines of "I Sell Soul," a dark, dirty cut off Rocket From The Tombs' new Barfly (Fire), it is apparent that these guys have lived through hell. The roughness of David Thomas' vocals, the urgency with which Steve Mehlman drums out those beats—it is almost as if these '70s rockers have a [...]
First there was this . Last night it sounded something like this . Next? Perhaps this . I've been Chicken Frying everything lately. There is something about that glorious mixture of flour and spices that really gets my feet treading water in the deep end. That's what this playlist is all about. It is a tribute to the world of chicken frying. Who better to do that than the bands that sound best chicken fried? Pull on your baffling breaded meat slippers and enjoy. Tender Branson-Chicken Fried Mix [...]

The legendary Rocket From The Tombs , born in 1974, flamed out in 1975, have finally recorded a studio album, delivering Barfly ( Fire Records ), and closing the circle on an incredible journey. The received wisdom (on the other side of the pond at least) goes that punk rock was invented in New York by the Ramones , who reconfigured Midwestern hard groove rock and 60s garage singles, into a formula that defined punk: short, fast, catchy, and unstoppable. But in some weird parallel universe, punk might have traced its roots to [...]

by Andrew Sacher DOWNLOAD: Rocket from the Tombs - "I Sell Soul" (MP3) Cleveland proto-punks Rocket from the Tombs formed in 1974, and without ever having released a record or playing more than a few shows, they broke up in 1975. Members went on to form the art punk wizards Pere Ubu and the young, loud, and snotty punks Dead Boys . Both groups appropriated some of [...]

Haven't done much due diligence this week. That said, I can recommend releases from Ryan Adams , Crooked Fingers and Look Mexico . Other than that, I've got no clue. The bonus tracks for the Yuck reissue are good, too. Don't know if they're worth buying the entire record again, though. Anybody have opinions on the new stuff from T.W. Walsh , Björk , Absu , Ben Lee , Rocket From the Tombs and Andrew Bird ? Haven't heard enough from any of them to form a [...]
