[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Dave Coresh 's got a nice lineup coming for 2010, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. The visuals for his single " Keep It Movin' ", directed by Roper, are super fresh and I love the cypher sequence at the end. All around dope video to match a dope song. Dave's coming....indulge!
I hadn't listened to The Ropers in a long time until I pulled them out alongside my old Slumberland favorites like Lorelei's Asleep EP , Honeybunch, Henry's Dress, and Velocity Girl. I love Sub Pop but Velocity Girl never matched the magic they had on Slumberland. Reminds me that a long time ago I saw Rocketship and Henry's Dress play at a party in Richmond, Va. Saw most of those bands as much I could between DC and NYC. Anyway, The Ropers were great [...]
The DC founded, Slumberland Records, celebrated their twenty-year existence with a more than colossal show on Friday at the Black Cat. With a clown car of acts squeezed into the Cat's normal time slot, fanatics of the label were able cheer wildly along to the likes of Brown Recluse, Pants Yell!, Frankie Rose & The [...]

Which is kind of crazy. A number of years ago, just before my 18th birthday, I put on a show at my Dad's "farm" that featured some of the earlier Slumberland-related acts like Lilys, Swirlies, and Small Factory. When the label was based in D.C. It lasted two of the hottest days in July. Hundreds of people showed and my father regretted his decision to let me try my hand at show promotion when someone almost burnt down a few trees with fireworks. I'd wanted to book Velocity Girl, but for some reason it hadn't worked out. They were probably [...]

In celebrating the 20th anniversary of Slumberland Records we contemplated listing the label's best albums as we've already done for Matador and Merge earlier this year, but we realized that Slumberland's tradition is built more on the 7" release than it is on the full album. Since they started the label has put out more 7" singles than anything else and they've all been a magnificent mix of styles and sounds. Bands as varied as caUSE co-MOTION! , Stereolab , the [...]

For twenty years, US label Slumberland Records has dedicated themselves to putting out the best in new dream-pop, shoegaze, independently twee and wonderful new acts. Since the late 1980's Slumberland has been the sole home and host to well-known acts such as Velocity Girl, Stereolab, Lilys, Swirlies, Boyracer, The Softies, The Aislers Set, (so, so many more) and most recently; up and comers The Crystal Stilts, Pains of Being Pure at Heart and of course, Philly's own: Brown Recluse to name only a few...and we really are under-listing here! In the coming days, we've rounded [...]

Ampersand On a recent online hunt for Juniper records I ended up on the Fantastic Records website, where I'd also ended up several times in the past, only this time I had some expendable cash. Alongside #Poundsign#, Juniper, and The Shapiros, there were a few names that were pretty unfamiliar to me, so I took a look through the catalog. After a quick listen to "Tokyo Girl" by Ampersand, I immediately ordered their <<<<<<<< EP (along with a Sparklers 7" – more on that later). I can't recall being as excited [...]

An Independent Music Video Compilation While skimming around on Youtube the other day – as I do most every day – I was extremely delighted to find that someone has uploaded the entirety of Munch One and Two!!! Munch was an "Independent Music Video Compilation" released by Season Records in 1994. Then, in 1997, Munch Two was released – this time a co-release between Season and Drive-In Records. The compilations featured videos from a wide array of amazing indiepop bands – The Cat's Miaow, Black Tambourine, Even As We Speak, The Magnetic Fields, Pencil Tin, Rocketship, [...]

Thanks to Three's Company , I thought my first apartment would be a huge three bedroom that was clean, well lit with a rad bar two-doors down. It would be cheap, wouldn't smell like a dump that four skaters lived in, wouldn't come with a bathtub full of human hair, wouldn't have dirty syringes under the refrigerator, and I'd have to pretend I was gay so my concerned landlord and his horny wife wouldn't think I was fucking my two hot roomates. None of these things ever happened and I'm still pretty bent about it. DC's [...]

============================== == "i fell asleep," she said. "huh?" "missed my stop; i fell asleep" "well." i said with a puff of cigarette. "can you tell me where i am?" i looked at my feet and scratched my head, thinking. a rain drop ran down my nose and i said, "i wish i knew; i did the same thing...wanna go get a drink?" - from the sleeve of The Ropers EP (original source unknown) ============================== == [...]

OK, enough cruelty. For now. Another band I've been itching to convert to mp3 are The Ropers. I think The Ropers were one of the most underrated indie pop bands of the mid-90s (there were millions and millions of said bands, you know), and I think their early songs still sound glorious. "Pretty Quiet Song" was released on I Wish I Was A Slumberland Record, as one half of a split tour-single with Boyracer, back in 1994. Side B - The Ropers - Pretty Quiet Song [4 stars mp3] [...]
