In October, we added NYC's alternative rock duo The Ropes to our class of "emerging" artists , seriously falling for singer Sharon Shy's incessant and sultry coo. Well, we now have a new reason to fall back in love with them because fellow Gothamite and terribly inventive remixer Mr Vega just took on their track "Water And Headphones". And if you were to look in the OED in a few years at the definition of "banger", something tells us that this track will be somewhere in there. The 8-bit crescendo that starts to [...]

NEW BAND CHEER: THE ROPES Two-person electronic bands are a specialty of ours here at Cannibal Cheerleader. We frequently report on our friends Heartsrevolution, our favorites Crystal Castles, locals Ghostland Observatory, and others swimming through our playlists. Recently though, we came upon an electronic duo swinging less into the land of electro-thrash or dance rave, but new wave and even pop. The Ropes are a duo consisting of singer Sharon Shy and the enigmatic multi-instrumentalist Toppy who hail from NYC. With a sound that's 100% indie-rock meets Garbage (yeah, remember [...]

This isn't music-related per se, but your faithful contributors Ceci and myself are participating in NaNoWriMo this month. Any RockSellout readers doing the same? 'Cause if you are and if you make the 50,000 word finish line, I will send you a free CD. That's right - free goodies for those who complete the challenge! You can also add me as a writing buddy - my NaNoWriMo writer ID is Keath007. Let me know how you're getting along throughout the month! Here's some writing music to help you get started: [...]

(photo by Bo Streeter) "You can all go fuck yourselves/ You can all go burn in hell". So begins "I Don't Like To Get Dirty" from our newest NYC band crush, The Ropes . Sure, they're like other boy/girl indie duos (cf. The Kills minus the violent sexual tension, Matt & Kim minus the zero sexual tension, et al.), but what sets these guys apart is, well, everything but the fact that there's two of them. The two utilize chugging, drenched in reverb guitars and alternative-leaning drum fills, simple bass progressions and singer Sharon Shy's sweaty, yearning [...]

They are The Ropes, they want to fight you & they totally kick ass! The Ropes are a New York City based duo consisting of vocalist/bassist Sharon Shy and multi-instrumentalist Toppy (who is known for playing the drums with the guitar hanging around his neck). The group formed in 2005 and are notorious for their engaging lyrics. They have toured extensively throughout the US, opening for acts such as The Bravery, Innerpartysystem, The Used, Spoon, and others. Pretty cool uh? Well wait to listen to this girl's voice accompanied with some explicit lyrics & [...]
Tigers Can Bite You has new music already out and more soon to come out. Their debut, Steve Ward Hears Voices, will be released Tuesday, October 21 on New and Used Records, preceded by the EP Taking and Running Away already released on September 30. With a voice remeniscent of Death Cab's Ben Gibbard and Grandaddy's Jason Lyttle (both whom he has recorded with), band frontman Dave Woody captures the essence of an indie rock singer. The group sets themselves a part with electronics that have more in common with Ladytron and M83, as well as a songwriting structure that [...]

I was recently turned on to a pretty decent electronic-pop duo from New York called The Ropes . The first song of theirs I checked out was I Don't Like to Get Dirty from their Cry to the Beat EP . "You can all go fuck yourselves/You can all go burn in hell" Sharon Shy gently croons in the song's opening lines and I am immediately taken aback and sucked in at the same time. [...]

There will be no updates the next couple of days. Going to Jutland tonight to see Interpol live at Train tomorrow night! Doesn't seem like that Entakt video from yesterday is working...or is it? You can stream a whopping 2 minutes of the new Carpark North single at myspace . Don't know if they are afraid of people recording and sharing it, but seems pointless to me only making a part of it available. [...]
No. No. Today's headline is not a reference to that legendary 80's band of the same name, but instead to the fact that the month of May is very close to beating the record as the sunniest month in Denmark since 1920. Like everyone else, I've just tried to download the new Sigur Rós track Gobbledigook . But since everyone else still seems to be trying to download it, I just receive some nice little error message. Will have to track it down via some blog instead [...]

The music of Rope creates a feeling of eerie dissonance. Slow drones and the anxious pluck of guitars are undershot by claustrophobic vocals that though a bit undecipherable, seem to ominously depict your undoing. The murkiness builds until the suspense takes over your whole being and then crushes you under a spastic explosion of angular noise. Tension is not so much an element of Rope's music as it is a fourth member of the ensemble; raining itself down in icy sheets and pulling your clothing tight against your skin. Heresy, And Then Nothing But Tears is the band's [...]
I'm going to remove links to a few blogs that are no longer being updated. My Current Favorites list needs to be updated! Spanish band Metropol is sweeping through bloggerland!
