Join us in LA this Monday night as B3SCI teams up with the Bootleg Bar for this month's artist in residence, Gavin Turek. If you live in LA and haven't caught Gavin perform yet, we gotta ask - why not? She can dance; like dance so much that, by the end of the show, you're exhausted from just watching her perform. Only other artist we saw accomplish this before was Lady Gaga in DC, 2011 (just saying). Plus the tunes are really really good, and also it's Gavin's birthday! So this Monday Night at the Bootleg: Gavin [...]

Photos and words by Scott Sheff It’s hard to imagine that anyone in The Mowgli’s is capable of having a bad day. The happy-go-lucky, eight-member band opened its month-long residency at The Satellite with an abundant of positive energy, hugs and upbeat tunes that just might be the answer to world peace. Playing mostly from its latest EP Love’s Not Dead , the band’s optimism shined through in songs like “San Francisco” (I've been in love with love / And the idea of something / Binding us together/ You know that love is strong enough) [...]

For the first week of the new year, The Satellite hosted free shows in partnership with Moheak Radio, Grimy Goods, and Downtown Lobby. A great way to lure fans in on cold nights usually spent recovering from overeating and the doldrums of returning to the nine-to-five grind. I ventured out on Tuesday to check out Midwest transplants, Line & Circle , whose anthemic indie rock is drenched in nostalgia. They played an impressive set that proved that while they may be new to LA, they came prepared. Lead singer, Brian Cohen's vocals harken back to an era before whining [...]

The Ross Sea Party has gone and released a really solid indie-rock album, and in an era when good indie-rock seems to have the same cool quotient as driving through Chick-Fil-A in gas-guzzling Oldsmobile. That is, unless you're a band doing the garage thing, or the retro thing, or the folk thing, or the soul-thing, or the whatev-wave thing. The L.A. quintet's "Hotel Pool" doesn't quite fit those; it's rhythmically over-sized and expansively arranged rock with tasty guitars, some persistent glockenspiel and, owing to frontman Brady Erickson's croon, a dose of romanticism. "Hotel Pool's" excess of "whoa-oh-oh" choruses (truly [...]

It's been more than a month since the release of Hotel Pool , the debut album from The Ross Sea Party. The album reeks of charm and sincerity with the kind of melodies that people make memories to. Now the band has decided to give away their second single off the release as a free download to their loyal fans and listeners. "Two Things" is described as a crowd favorite at The Ross Sea Party live shows, and one listen should let you in on the secret of why. Is it possible for a song to be both [...]

I'm a bit late on this, but I wanted to let everyone know that The Ross Sea Party have finally released their debut Hotel Pool and you most definitely need to go out of your way to check it out. I've spent the last couple of days with it and I've been enjoying it, so I wanted to repost what I said about the lead single "Thunder" and some buy links for Hotel Pool . On "Thunder": "Vocals belting, guitars clattering and clanging; The Ross Sea Party re-emerges in 2012 like thunder. Or [...]

You're definitely going to want to check out Los Angeles quintet The Ross Sea Party (@therossseaparty). As their bio suggests, like the little known, yet heroic wing of Ernest Shackleton's 1914 trans-Antarctic expedition (their namesake), they're recognized for their “easy navigation across an ever-changing atmosphere.” With sweeping, spacious instrumentation and storytelling lyrics, "Thunder" is super catchy - our only complaint being that we have to keep hitting play again every two minutes and nine seconds. "Thunder" is the first single from The Ross Sea Party’s upcoming debut full-length album, [...]
