Good Girls, Bad Boys: A Review of The Royalty, The Lovers

Good Girls, Bad Boys: A Review of The Royalty, The Lovers The Royalty featuring Nicole Boudreau Why do good girls fall for bad boys? This is the central question of the debut album by power pop band The Royalty. Contrary to its innocuous title, The Lovers is filled with liars, cheaters, drunks, emotional abusers, and commitment phobes, all memorialized in song by Nicole Boudreau, one of the year's most dynamic and mesmerizing singers. For all her songs of love gone wrong, Boudreau is neither a whiner nor a victim. On The Lovers, the volume, force, intensity, urgency of her voice projects [...]

RAVE'S FAVE! The Royalty — Bartender

RAVE'S FAVE! The Royalty — Bartender By Bruce Rave The Royalty are a new El Paso band that combine rock freshness with a retro feel. I met them at a SXSW party. They were really nice people, and I've been keeping fingers crossed that I'd like at least some of their songs. It turns out their Lovers album is pretty damn good. "Bartender" has a big sound and compelling melody behind Nicole Boudreau's strong vocals. The Royalty — Bartender [...]

Gordon in the morning: This is like That

We're knee-deep in the fawnathon for the Jubilee, and Gary Barlow is leading the fawning : GARY Barlow has branded Prince Harry the "Robbie Williams of the Royal Family". I'm pretty certain that's treasonable, isn't it? Oh, hang on, he means it as a compliment: "Harry is the star of the Royal Family, he is the Robbie of the Royal Family." You can hear the unsaid here, as Barlow thinks "and I'm the William, the one who does all the work and gets overhsadowed by the gurning clown time after time... but I [...]

Mentioned twice in my FB news feed today and for good reason: =Royalty= Here's what their bio says: Royalty are a London based outfit producing 80's inspired analog synth music ranging from funk and boogie to modern beats. Pretty spot on methinks.

Mail fumes that Glitter gets gold

As part of its 1970s season, BBC Two re-repeated one of the 1977 Top Of The Pops that have been delighting BBC Four viewers since the start of the year. They chose one with Gary Glitter in - understandable, as nearly the rest of the year's selections to date have been Manhattan Transfer or Lynsey DePaul doing Rock Bottom forever. The Daily Mail doesn't understand : Convicted sex offender Gary Glitter stand to get paid thousands of pounds in royalties after the BBC aired a repeat of him performing on Top of the Pops [...]

Royal Ties 'Catch 22′

Royal Ties is three French chaps who are clearly is stuck in 2007 - they make good ol' fashioned electro - it doesn't feature the word "future," there are no wobbles and it's not complextro. It's not the most forward thinking electro you'll ever come across, but sometimes it's nice to indulge in the past. On the whole the EP is a bit same-y, but their is one standout track in the form of 'Catch 222 - anyone say Vitalic circa 2006?

Brazil might have a better idea for collecting royalties

Cory Doctrow, writing on Boing Boing , has welcomed the news that the Brazilian Senate is proposing an overhaul on how royalties are collected and distributed. It's following on from a six month investigation into the affairs of the local copyright collection societies which found 15 directors suspected of fraud and crime. Now, naturally, nobody would suggest that similar misdeeds are taking place at ASCAP or PRS, but the organisations do share a lot of similarities in their organisations and ways of sharing up the royalty cake. Doctrow hopes that this might be a first [...]

German court might just make YouTube, internet unworkable

GEMA, the German rights organisation, has won a significant victory in a case against Google. In short, the German courts have decided that YouTube is responsible for the content posted on its site, not the individual posting videos, and as such should be paying royalties for any music that winds up there. BBC News explains what the ruling means: If enforced, the ruling could also slow the rate at which video is posted to the site as any music clip would have to be cleared for copyright before being used. With sixty [...]

Digital music worth more than pub and club jukeboxes

A small step towards digital music sustainability, as PRS announces that the royalties from digital streams is now worth more than royalties from pubs and clubs . This might be a sign that digital music has become an increasingly robust business. Or might be a reflection that there are 4,500 fewer pubs in business than 2008 . -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

How ASCAP screws smaller artists...

... and by "smaller", I mean all but the two hundred biggest acts in America. Zoe Keating plays cello, and does fairly well in terms of bringing in an audience and selling tickets. Obviously, there are expenses involved in hiring venues, as she explains : For example, at one concert I played last month the gross ticket sales for the night were $9336. Of the many expenses deducted, one of the items was $86 to ASCAP. What is this? This is the nightly portion of a license fee that the hall pays to ASCAP for [...]

Musical Youth must pass on The Dutchie

Musical Youth must pass on The Dutchie Given that you couldn't move at the time for people pointing out that Pass The Dutchie used to be a song about drugs, the real surprise is that it's taken until 2012 for the legal process to completly decide that it wasn't Musical Youth's song . After they didn't get any cash when the song was in The Wedding Singer, they tried to sue their solicitors for bad advice. That's failed too. Of course, this sort of behaviour in court didn't exactly help the case, either: [...]

Brought To You By Mike

DollarShaveClub.com - Our Blades Are F***ing Great
Brought To You By Mike I saw a couple arguments on twitter for this video to overtake KONY as viral hit of the week. I'm a little closer to the equator for the week so I will continue to shamelessly forsake any responsibility for this blog as long as the roulette tables continue to spin. But seriously, here are some tracks for that epic beach party you're planning. Yelle - Que Veux Tu (Eumig & Cinon's Poppy Remix) Tyga feat. Lil Wayne - Faded [...]

Interview // American Royalty

Interview // American Royalty Last month our esteemed U.S writer Caitlin White picked up on a wonderful EP from fellow countrymen American Royalty . Their Matchstick EP was a bold and dazzling math-rock, electro-pop hybrid that marked the band out as, not just ones to watch, but simply as one of our favourite new bands on the scene. The three-piece head to SXSW this week and, ahead of that trip, GFP caught up with them to find out a little more about them and their music... Your [...]

Gordon in the morning: Near the Queen

Kanye West has been in London, and apparently The Queen is unhappy : Kanye West tear-up upsets the royals By GORDON SMART, Showbiz Editor WHEN Kanye West moved to London it was a dead cert he'd rub a few people up the wrong way with his Zoolander antics. Now he has not only upset the fashion world but also members of the Royal Family. Gordon bases this on a quote from Kanye's special friend Big Sean: "We went to London and we were right next to the Buckingham Palace [...]

Danish band allege collection agency blocked anti-ACTA gig

Interesting thing over on Boing Boing : Danish band Qu'est-ce Que Fuck had been going to play a gig protesting against ACTA. Only KODA, the royalty-collection organisation, put a bunch of stupid hurdles in their way, including an insane demand for over-the-top payments from the organisers. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Olly Murs admits he's only as famous as the woman on the money at home

Olly Murs - imagine Gary Barlow crafted by the makers of Fireman Sam - appears to overestimate his brand recognition : Asked whether he is as well-known as the queen, he said: ''Maybe in the UK, but the queen is known across the world and I definitely don't think I have got to that status. The Queen was reported to be "fuming" at the suggestion: "Sixty bloody years on the notes and stamps, sixty state openings, sixty Christmas day messages. Can he compete with that? I've got a fucking bridge named after me. Where is the Olly [...]

Universal charge Eminem the costs of trying to rip him off

There's a strange little detail in the audit of monies owed to Eminem by Universal. The label had been to court for a tussle over iTunes royalties - Universal said they should be at the lower rate for sales; Eminem felt they were licences and should be charged at a higher rate. Eminem won; hence Universal having to work out how much they owed. Techdirt's Mike Masnick spotted the sting: However, the most insane thing here may be the line at the bottom, in which it appears that Universal held back $2 [...]
