Tweet It'd probably take more than Ryan McFun (sic), his Ruby Suns and a bowl of dusty fruit to roll us back into the summer but my how these New Zealanders (so not everything from there is all black!) do envisage a calender year without spittle from the sky or frost underfoot. Of course we'll be forever partial to them because they gave generously to one of our first Indiecater compilations (the woozy joy that was 'There Are Birds') but [...]

These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]

The Ruby Suns - There Are Birds ( Justyn 's Version) [ mp3 ] noisy, groovy, haunting Justyn is back!

Words by Jacob Barron Have you been to Mexico lately? It's so hot right now, both in terms of temperature and in terms of horrific, drug-related violence. Still, its hotness is unquestioned. I mean, it's so hot, it could take a crap, split it in two, wrap each piece in aluminum foil, stick hooks in them and sell them as earrings to Kate Middleton. That's how hot Mexico is right now. Topical reference. Round of applause. All right. Anyway, you should go there, Mexico that is, or any other [...]

If I didn't know this band better I'd be throwing out all manner of accusations at jumping on the zeitgeist but then this is the Ruby Suns and they practically invented this sort of thing. We've loved the NZ true blue poppers for a long time, so much so that we've resisted featuring them too often for fear of latent fanboyism. But now the dust settled on their last album 'Fight Softly' we could avoid the colourful tropicalia of 'Cranberry' no longer. Of course the Ruby Suns do pepper their melodic passages with frequent curveballs which has probably frustrated as [...]
'Think for Yourself' and 'Yesterday.' 'Birthday' and 'Help!' Vote to see who moves on to the next round!

i usually hate looking back on years of things. the illusion of how fast a year went is shattered when you realise how much happened. 2010 is slightly different though.. when i look back on its music, i actually feel really happy. so, so many outrageously good albums and singles have kicked in the door this year. i cant remember what it was like in previous years, but this year seemed to have one highly anticipated release after another. these next seven tracks are, to me, the songs that most defined 2010. and what a year it was: [...]

Hey dudes, here's my list of favorite albums from the past year (20 10 , stoners). I picked twenty this year as a small tribute to this being the first year where debate on how to pronounce said year swirled fiercely and ardently. Is it "twenty-ten"? Or is it "two thousand ten"? How to decide? Anyhoo, I ranked 'em, but after the first 6 or 7, it's all pretty arbitrary. The Suburbs came out on top. Can you believe that shit?? . . [...]
31. Dan Kaufman's Shiboleth @ Lounge (14/10)Se eu aqui elegesse a figura do ano, Dan Kaufman podia bem estar lá no topo (ou perto dali).

If there was one "scene" I watched with great intent this past year, it would be the seemingly unprecedented barrage of hazy electro-pop releases that made their way onto the internet and into people's hearts/portable media devices. I've literally never listened to so much non-rock music as I have in the past 8 or 9 months. "Chillwave", as the genre has become known, was a divisive, early year buzz topic, created and championed the year before by (those danged) writers and bloggers to the dismay, chagrin, and annoyance of many. To others, it was simply a cozy conduit by [...]
Bunches and bunches of these songs deserve their own essay/prose/post/frame on a wall. But there is such a thing as self-discovery, and mixes are the best way to offer you a buffet. Feel free to fix your own plate. This mix is INSPIRED by loads of our cousins across the sea and these favorite opening [...]

lots of psychedelia this week here at blouse. lots and lots. it might be a bit of a departure from regular blouse scheduling, but its a nice one. especially on humpday. i think 'eyesore' by women was the song that really got me juiced up for this psychedelic action. for me, it really typifies this psychedelic rock wave that seems to be doing the rounds at the moment. drenched in sepia toned reverb and dusty vintage guitars, 'eyesore' is a perfect soundtrack for our upcoming summer - if it ever arrives. watch for the meandering, slow [...]

Hér er ein allsherjar lagasúpa af erlendis hipster-indie og remixum sem, eftir því sem mig minnir (afar óáræðanlegt minni það reyndar), hefur ekki heyrst hér á Rjómanum áður. Sum þeirra laga sem heyra má hér að neðan eru af mörgum talin vera með þeim betri á árinu og því um að gera að leggja einbeitt og afar vandlega við hlustir. Myndin hér að ofan er úr myndbandinu við lagið "Bombay" með El Guincho. Small Black - Camouflage Small Black - Camouflage [...]

Dead Models - "Tonight" Straightforward, fuzzy and 1960s-tinged garage rock with a killer, repeatable guitar riff. Sometimes that's all you need. Broken Social Scene - "Texico Bitches" Forget Cee Lo. The year's best "fuck you" belongs to a couple of Canadians who recorded a timely middle finger to the oil industry. The New Pornographers - "Crash Years" Melodically, the opening verse of "Crash Years" is so good it almost makes the rest of the song [...]
In 2006 it seemed like Matthew Adam Hart would soon reach prolific status. Hart's flurry of successful remixes and the release of The Russian Futurists' '05 gem, Our Thickness, suggested that he could become the next Matthew Herbert of sorts, a musical entrepreneur with refined innovation even beyond his specialized niche of electronica. Our Thickness [...]

The days darken, the clocks retreat and the tube becomes a symphony of snuffles... it can only be the onset of winter. Here are five songs that have helped me survive the first week of this shit: Anna Calvi - Moulinette (Live) ( mp3 ) The Sunday Times bade me download this, but then I found a live version from a show at the Luminaire. Calvi's tremulous house-of-cards folk sounds even more delicate in this unfettered surround, and yet her voice stays strong and true, a lighthouse amid the darkness and distant drums. [...]
