What's been an exhaustive labor of love these past few months, is finally coming to be an actual reality! SXSW 2010 is a mere week or so away and IGIF is back for our second helping of the (beyond) crazy week of music industry madness. Last year we got our toes wet throwing a great day party with Two Syllable Records ; this year we're doing a full-on cannonball and making a big splash with our own party. Without further ado, we give you Floating Fest 2K10 : [...]

The Ruby Suns at CMJ/Bowery Ballroom (10/14/09) Photo : Jon Klemm Download : Ruby Suns - "Cranberry" The Ruby Suns new record, Fight Softly , came out last week ( Mar 2 ) on Sub Pop and the New Zealand trio are about to head out on the road for a big US tour (and international tour after that). They'll be hitting up SXSW next week for a bunch of showcases and parties [...]

Two new ones from Sub Pop that caught my attention. The Ruby Suns & Dum Dum Girls , two bands I didn't take the time to learn anything about, but am content with the obvious fact that they each have pretty infectious pop gems. Dum Dum Girls- Jail La La (off I Will Be ) The Ruby Suns- Cranberry (off Fight Softly )

The Ruby Suns - Cranberry I got my hands on the new Ruby Suns album. Must say it’s a departure from they’re African-roots vibe they had on Sea Lion. This still is a hint of it in more of an electronic form but it’s not a predominate. Not that this is a bad thing so far on my first listen this album has been great. I can wait to see them and Toro Y Moi on the same bill at the end of this month at Black Cat.

After a week long hiatus in the 60 degree heat, Drake is back with an alabaster tan and a new outlook the Peter Gabriel 's "Scratch My Back". -ed. Pouria is taking a week off with the Noise Pop flu. I think he went out one too many nights, so I'm covering for him again. My personal favorites this week are things with exclamation points, so look for those within. Also, a southern rock concept album starring Stephen King. Really. Jason DeRulo by Jason DeRulo [...]

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars Last time out, The Ruby Suns drenched their record in clever guitar parts, using electronic elements to fill out the empty space here in there. This time around, they've changed that recipe entirely, filling their newest record, Fight Softly with beat upon blistering beat. It completely changes the dynamic of the recorded product for the band; this is something old fans will have to get used to, as it doesn't look to change anytime soon. You hate to have [...]

The Ruby Suns are a California born but New Zealand based indie band signed to Sub Pop Records . The band just released second album, Fight Softly , yesterday, describing it in their bio as "the kind of head-spinning combination of big-picture vision and sumptuous detail that only comes from an artist with an urgent need to express all the stuff he's seen. And you can dance to it!" I think that just about sums it up. Oh, and the band is touring with Toro Y Moi . That's pretty cool. Since this band [...]

Playlist: New Releases 03.02.10 Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back Stream / Purchase [mp3] When the tracklisting was revealed for Peter Gabriel's covers project, a lot of jaws dropped. It always seemed like Gabriel was one to ignore trends, finding inspiration in the oddest of spaces. With covers of Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Radiohead and others, it turns out Peter Gabriel is more like Davids [...]

Sorry for the lack of updates the past few weeks, as I felt I needed a little break from the blog. Considering it's only March (seriously, it's already March!), it may seem odd that I would already need some time away, but hey, it happens! With that being said, the first thing to scratch off the list upon updating is catching up with the album releases from the past weeks, including this week as well. And as you notice, there's a ridiculous amount of releases that made their way down the pipe - almost too many to [...]

Well March is beginning with a bit of a whimper as far as new music is concerned, but there are some good albums out today. I'd say I'm excited to hear Black Swan , the new Athlete album, but it was released last summer in the UK so it already has a spot on my iPod. Peter Gabriel's new covers album Scratch My Back is out today and features songs by Arcade Fire [...]

The history of popular music in New Zealand is a rich and truly interesting one, and recent posts at Songblague have been indicative of our collective appreciation for what the country has to offer. From the springboard of Flying Nun's cult success came new efforts at tapping the well of pop in New Zealand, and one of the best and brightest labels to nail down the niche has been Lil' Chief Records. Through hard work and some undeniably compelling bands, Lil' Chief eventually caught Sub Pop's ear in the US, and one of the first bands Sub [...]
To talk about the new Ruby Suns album "Fight Softly," one must first breach the topic of Animal Collective and their year's best masterpiece "Merriweather Post Pavilion" from 2009. The reason why is simple - it seems to me that The Ruby Suns are intent on crafting their new album from nearly the same cloth that Animal Collective did - for better or worse. If you're going to actively try and copy such a critically acclaimed artist, the comparison is either going to make or break you, and that largely depends on if you're actually up to the lofty standards [...]
