Who : The Ruby Suns Title : Fight Softly Release Date : March 2nd Label : Sub Pop Thoughts : As a huge fan of The Ruby Suns last effort, Sea Lion , I was a bit concerned when I heard that Ryan McPhun and company were going to veer away from the catchy indie pop that had so fully endeared me and countless others to the band in the [...]
the ruby suns - cranberry [new zealand is in the house and this time the ruby suns return with a bright quirky gem of a song that mixes afro pop with lite house grooves. you have to hear it to believe it, which is probably why it's wongie's song of the week. brilliant!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

For a much-needed glimpse of summer during these dismal winter days, check out "Cranberries," the new single from Auckland, New Zealand, trio the Ruby Suns. The track, loaded with synth and tribal rhythms, is from the band's third release, Fight Softly (Sub Pop), and it will have you imagining yourself on the beach in no time. [...]

The Ruby Suns are a band from Auckland, New Zealand. This is not debatable. What is debatable: how to class their sound. Is it tribal? Is it dance? Is it throwback? Drawing from influences from one extreme as 60's psychedelia to another in Polynesian folk, eclectism is clearly key to this band. The Ruby Suns are definitely not a passing fancy; having already put out two albums (a self-titled one in 2005 and self titled and 'Sea Lion' in 2007), they are set to release album #3, 'Fight Softly', on [...]

Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes: Radar Brothers "Horses Warriors" from The Illustrated Garden (to be released on 3/23) [ download ] Ruby Suns [...]

Editor's Note: Albums are already starting to stack up, and oddly, this week's installment of Radio Dick offers a playlist of things to come (and probably fitting that most of these are heavy hitting acts with prolific careers already). I'm starting to get the feel that many bands used 2009 as an off-season and this year's going to fire off as a grand finale. These tracks all span a variety of genres, from relatively unknown acts to the canonical David Byrne. Everyone's going to have their hands in the cookie jar this year. Don't expect consistency, and fully expect to [...]

With all the (mostly deserved) hoopla that surrounded Animal Collective throughout 2009, it is inevitable that their influence will seep into the sounds of many bands throughout 2010. Much like all the wretched crap that Arcade Fire's influence has spawned since Funeral ( *cough cough* ), most of this cribbing will be (a) blatantly obvious, and (b) awful. "Who's Ripping Off Animal Collective This Week" is a new feature that will pop up, as needs warrant, to document these transgressions. They are presented without comment, though you are free to add your own. Since [...]

Pavement The American indie-legends are set to release their best of album , 'Quarantine The Past' in March, which will feature 23 tracks spanning their entire career from 1989 to 1999. In celebration (promotion) of this, they have put a wee taster up as a free download, a remastered version of 'Gold Soundz ', download yourself a copy here . Evening Chorus If you missed out on my post on the Evening Chorus the other week, then now is your chance to get [...]
"Cranberry," from the forthcoming album Fight Softly, due out March 10th. If you've ever caught my radio show, than you've most likely heard New Zealand's Ruby Suns. Their last LP, 2008's Sea Lion, remains a constant in my rotation. MP3: The Ruby Suns :: Cranberry (radio edit) ------- + Download The Ruby Suns via eMusic's 25 free MP3 [...]

Photograph by Autumn De Wilde In the pirate blogosphere culture of our recently ushered in decade, it can be hard to keep an album under wraps. Just ask Spoon. With whispers of leaks plaguing the unveiling of Transference , they moved up the North American release date of their seventh album to January 19, seven days ahead of schedule, even featuring a stream on NPR's First Listen to satiate the clamouring internet crowds. The hype is not surprising, given the wait between their latest LP and 2007's critically acclaimed Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga [...]

Sea Lion, the name of the latest album from The Ruby Suns is inspired by a sea lion colony visible from Hwy 1, south of San Francisco. I figured this was a neat little tid-bit of information considering the band is based out of New Zealand. Recorded by Ryan McPhun alone in his Auckland basement and sung entirely in Maori, Sea Lion is not another psychedelic indie pop album. This is meant to pay tribute and teach those listening to the record how to embody one's surroundings. The album is an exotic and experiential romp [...]

A couple of years ago, I decided to cover my old nylon string guitar in stickers. Among the free stickers I managed to pick up at record stores and concerts was one promoting the New Zealand electro pop outfit the Ruby Suns . Even though I hadn't heard the band at the time, its bright yellow and red font made it the most eye-catching sticker on the guitar. Given that my guitar advertises their name so prominently, it's a good thing that the Ruby Suns actually write good music. Their latest single is called "Cranberry," a [...]
The last seven days have been one giant roller coaster ride of emotions. The excitement over our interview with Bonnaroo founder Ashley Capps and the numerous summer festivals that dished out their 2010 bills this week soon subsided after we learned of the untimely death of Jay Reatard and Teddy Pendergrass. But then there's our weekly Friday Mixtape, which always puts us in a good mood. After all, as always, we get to present you with the week's best new mix of singles, remixes, and covers as well as mp3s from some acts you should check [...]
Dirty Projectors - "Emblem of the World" ; At some point we're probably all going to get sick and tired of hearing great new tunes from the Dirty Projectors, but until we reach that point we will continue on like normal enjoying all of their gorgeous harmonies and fractured melodies pieced together to form perfect pop music. This B-Side to the new "Ascending Melody" 7" is just what we've come to expect from these guys and we're just gonna bask in its warm glow a little longer. Grade : A- [...]
