The last time Cover Lay Down suffered a major technological crisis, we had plenty of warning: Blogger had just started shutting down music blogs for spurious copyright claims, and in response, our mp3 file host had given us a two week window to pack up and move on. And so, after some soul searching and a huge outpouring of support from our small but committed fan base, in November of 2008, we opened the doors to a newly redesigned space here at coverlaydown.com. For the next four and a half years, the bits and [...]

Or more specifically, there are more than a few musicians who abandoned bona fide careers for a chance in the limelight. (And vice versa.) That's why we went on a research binge. We wanted to know if Rick Ross wasn't the only [...]

by Tiana Feng Yesterday I attended the Juno Concert Series hosted by Exclaim!, Now Magazine and The Agency Group. Various Canadian artist's gathered for a night to cover songs from artists on Canada's Hall of Fame. Exclaim! has a good write up of all the songs featured. Highlights included Jay Malinowski doing a hilarious version of Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" with strings as well as a July Talk style cover of Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man . [...]

Facebook The last time that Evening Hymns graced a Toronto stage, it was back in August as part of the Summerworks festival and came a few days before the official release of their gorgeously heavy second album Spectral Dusk . After that show, which featured a band and lightshow specially assembled for that performance, Jonas Bonnetta and Sylvie Smith - the Evening Hymns principals - jetted across the ocean to tour the record across Europe with friends and album collaborators The Wooden Sky , only returning a couple [...]

For those just joining us: we're in the midst of a multi-feature series on previously-unblogged cover and tribute albums released this year. Previously, we posted explorations of EP-length cover sets and folky all-covers albums from artists generally associated with other genres; today, we take on four of those ubiquitous mixed genre multi-artist tribute albums, with an eye towards their folkier tracks. Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe , the newest countryfolk-slash-country rock tribute from Austin-based label Fiesta Red Records , [...]

Frank Yang We've certainly come a long way since late Summer, 2009 when Diamond Rings was that curious synth-pop side-project from the guy who fronted local garage-rock fixtures The D'Urbervilles (now Matters ). That infectious Summer song turned into a breakout debut album in Special Affections that would take John O'Regan, his guitar and laptop and unicorn tapestry, on a glitter-and-eyeshadow-fuelled journey around the world. Quite a tale, and one that had many anxious for the sequel. That part the second officially arrives with the [...]

Norman Wong/Jules Schill It's a real puzzle to me why Toronto's Snowblink aren't huge, and I mean huge in relative Canadian indie terms, not absolute household name terms, I'm not delusional. Their 2011 debut Long Live was an unqualified art-folk jewel , as simple and homespun as it was rich and complex, and not content to simply let the record speak for itself, they also toured it across North America and Europe, supporting not only some A-list Canadian talent but Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on his Spring 2011 solo tour. [...]
I've always loved the Calgary Folk Fest. You can't go wrong lying in the grass while taking in great music on Princes Island Park. It kinda makes you forget you're in the middle of the city. This year's folk fest brought alot of diverse acts, from Chris Isaak to Rural Alberta Advantage mixed, and even a side of hip-hop. Here’s a playlist of some of the bands I enjoyed the most. We're already looking forward to next year! 1. Original post: [...]

In one year from today I will be getting married to a very nice woman. The party will be in the mountains at a heli-skiing lodge (pictured above). Here are a few songs that are leading the way out of the gates for our official wedding theme song. I probably won't get my way. 1. John Prine & Iris Dement - In Spite of Ourselves [...]
