Indie dance revival anyone? Not sure I'd mind terribly much. Especially if people took Wevvers' early remixes as their template. This new EP of remixes for The Glass might be an indication of things to come. Free downloads. The original (produced by ex-Sabres Jagz Kooner) is a perfectly nice piece of indie for free download. Bit of jangly guitar, bit of wah wah and gentle vocals. Todd Terry's first up for remix duty. He has two. First, the House remix which redirects the original with a slightly scuzzy bass onto the indie dancefloor, using the vocals to provide a [...]

We had Mojo Filter's new album yesterday. Here's his take on the revered Sabres of Paradise classic Smokebelch II. Free download. Keeps that chiming intro with extra shuffly drums and a bit of whooshing. This wants to be an outer space version. This is comedown music, not arms in the air stuff. This is music for when the evening's all become a bit much and you're legs are starting to seize. You can simply sway or stagger in time to the shuffling beats. http://soundcloud.com/thebenz

We had YANAB's new EP a few days ago. In writing the post I realised that his brilliant cover version of Sabres of Paradise's Haunted Dancehall which we had here now comes in a new, beatless version. But it seems no-one is aware, as the play count is very low. This post aims to remedy that. YARAB says " This is with the drums taken out, for folks who like that sort of thing. It's much closer to the original ." By original he means the In The Nursery remix. It is but that sells it short. [...]

Yes there have been mentions of St Etienne and The Orb but if there was one other set of remixes that I could have predicted would get a mention it would be the Sabres of Paradise mixes for Yello. I simply don't understand it. So, this post is to ask you, dear reader, to explain what is good about them. I can't see it. Yello - Jungle Bill (Sabres of Paradise Mix 1) Yello - Jungle Bill (Sabres of Paradise Mix 2)

Another mix from Weatherall's Sabres of Paradise period in the early 90s. Brothers Love Dubs original of The mighty Ming is a progressive house classic in its own right from 1992. Sabres slow it down a bit and extend it to a progressive house dub feel. Not a genre that had legs beyond Weatherall. This is a lovely, long, hypnotic mix. Sabres at their best. Have the original mix for comparison purposes. Brothers Love Dubs – The Mighty Ming (Sabres of Paradise Slow Mix) Brothers Love Dubs – The Mighty [...]

Stereo MCs funky, hip hop gets chilled out with a massive spliff courtesy of Sabres of Paradise. Another pair of lengthy mixes at over nine minutes each. This loses all the vocals and concentrates on a head-nodding groove for the terminally wasted. A supremely summery pair of mixes, maxing out the organ sound. Stereo MCs – Everything (Everything Grooves Part 1) Sabres of Paradise Mix Stereo MCs – Everything (Everything Grooves Part 2) Sabres of Paradise Mix

As promised, especially for this series, You Are Not All Boring has done a Weatherall remix/cover. It is of Sabres of Paradise's Haunted Dancehall . It's available to download and it's brilliant. I asked YANAB about his favourite Weatherall tracks: My top 3 mixes of his and top 3 original tracks. Remixes 1 - 101 (Sonic Shuffle Mix) 2 - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Andrew Weatherall Mix) 3 - Yello - Jungle Bill (Sabres of Paradise Mix [...]
I've long found that Andrew Weatherall's dub-techno project Sabres Of Paradise 1993 single is an emotional mirror, reflecting the listener's state of mind. The 12" had two versions, Entry and Exit , both ten minutes long with not a second wasted, live sounding machine music with house keys and dubby percussion. There's also the more well known, completely gorgeous 7" Beatless mix , with it's starburst twinkles and elegant keyboards. When you're feeling up, these tracks sound like aural ecstacy. On the flipside when you're down, blue, melancholy, bummed out, distraught or devasted Smokebelch [...]
Yesterday was Andrew Weatherall's birthday, on which we give thanks for his life and work (got me days mixed, thought it was today). Something noisy to celebrate. A Sabres remix of Northern Ireland's Therapy? and their 1994 single Nowhere . Guitars and distortion to the fore on this track and embarassment for me otherwise. Therapy - Nowhere (Theraputic Distortion Mix by Sabres of Paradise) Picture from this curious site: http://www.tinkertailorltd.com /2010/03/introducing-andrew-we atherall.html

Since we had an LFO track yesterday , I thought we'd have LFO remixing Sabres of Paradise today. From 19952s "Versus" album of remixes, which had contributions from, amongst others, Depth Charge, The Chems and In The Nursery; LFO give Duke of Earlsfield a hard, metallic, techno sheen: Sabres of Paradise - Duke of Earlsfield (LFO Mix) Buy

We had a 1994 remix of Sabres of Paradise track, Wilmot's Last Skank a couple of weeks ago . This time another mix from the 103 on Warp. On remix duty, Mr Scruff (aka Andy Carthy). He describes himself as DJ, producer, cartoonist and tea drinker. From 1994, a remix of a key Sabres track Wilmot. This was released on Wilmot II, a lovely 103 vinyl by Warp Records. It features all the slow parping, skanking you'd expect. Lovely stuff. Sabres of Paradise - Wilmot's Last Skank Buy And just in case you didn't notice, I thought I'd draw your attention to three things 1. In case you hadn't vsited Bagging Area recently, Swiss Adam has a Weatherall mix of Steve Mason here . 2. Two comments on last [...]

Last week we had the Sabres of Paradise remix of Brothers Love Dubs' The Mighty Ming. As a reminder: Brothers Love Dubs were Alan Scott Bremner, David Charles Seaman & Stephen John Anderson. They only produced a smattering of releases, of which their best and most successful was 1992′s The Mighty Ming on Stress Records. This was released with remixes as part of their "Now That's What I Call Ming Vol 1″ LP in 1993 (really a double 12″), one of which was a Sabres mix. Commenting on the post, Lee Jit kindly [...]

Whatever else happened last week, it was a good week as I filled in another gap in my Weatherall collection. And this is form's today's Weatherall Monday. The Sabres of Paradise remix of The Mighty Ming by Brothers Loves Dubs. Brothers Love Dubs were Alan Scott Bremner, David Charles Seaman & Stephen John Anderson. They only produced a smattering of releases, of which their best and most successful was 19922s The Mighty Ming on Stress Records. This blog is keepingitpeel . It's all about commemorating the memory of the most important DJ from the UK on the anniversary of his untimely death at the age of 65 back in 2004. My thanks to Webbie of Football and Music for organising the day. Meanwhile, Drew has been running an excellent series on the countdown to today. To keep things going, I'm going to have a week of keepingitpeel posts. Drew featured mostly the indie and punk stuff for which Peel was famed. My series is going to feature dance acts, for whom Peel [...]

In which D contemplates giving up smoking. And Sabres provides the soundtrack. Oct 94: Tomorrow, I plan to give up smoking. Hardy fucking har thinks Ctel. Hardy fucking har thinks D as well. Oky, I know you've heard this countless times before. But this time I plan to really give it a shot. To be quite honest, I'm actually getting really sick of smoking. First off, it costs a ridiculous amount of wedge if you're a committed smoker (I'm not one of those ponces who buy a pack of ten extra-low Silk Cut and then take three [...]

Welcome to the week with an early track from Sabres of Paradise. Not on their Sabresonic album or indeed anywhere else, from 1993, "Lick Wid Nit Wit", taken from the Volume series of CD magazines. Sabres of Paradise - Lick Wid Nit Wit Buy product

Download audio file (02-In-Your-Room-Portishead-Re mix.mp3) Let's see... We started out w/ str8 up heat to kick start it all, then Dilla , then Beats , then Love , last month was Stereolab & this month is no surprise to the faithfuls that respecognize that P up there on the cover. For those not in the know... That " P " is for Portishead. Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley gave us a unique new [...]

Andrew Weatherall, Jag Koonzer and Gary Burns AKA The Sabres of Paradise unleashed this ultimate morning after tune in 93 on their debut album "Sabresonic" , and despite releasing two more albums and a whole host of amazing singles and remixes, for me, this tune will forever be remembered as their finest moment. Absolutely beautiful stuff. The Sabres of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Beatless mix)
