Frank Yang The baseline for any Fucked Up show is glorious mayhem. Add in factors like a hometown show, a full-album recital of their ridiculously ambitious and critically-acclaimed, concept rock opera David Comes To Life , the last gig of an insanely busy year in support of said album that took the band around the world from bars to festivals to arenas, a fundraising benefit for Barriere Lake Solidarity , and a lineup made up of some of the band's favourite acts from Toronto (and outlying regions), and expectations [...]

fanfarlo.com When it was announced earlier this Summer that Canadian Musicfest / Canadian Music Week was moving from it's traditional slot in the second week of March - right before SXSW - to the fourth week of March - right after SXSW - I was confused and concerned. Confused because, well, I dislike change, and concerned because whereas doing back-to-back festivals is exhausting no matter which way you order it, I liked that I could get into game shape with CMW, go hard through SXSW and then collapse immediately afterwards and savour my annual post-Austin [...]

Singer/songwriter, Sadie, who has toured as a backing vocalist for La La Brooks of The Crystals (Da Doo Ron Ron), will be releasing her debut EP "Waiting For The Moment" on Dec. 6th. The six-song EP features songwriting, instrumental assistance and production from Ted Mason, known for his work as member of multi-platinum group Modern English ("Melt With You") as well as president of Mi5 Recordings. Mason says, " I get a thrill out of developing and working with new artists. I have known Sarah "Sadie" Brummer for years and I had time between projects to jump in and give [...]

Idée Fixe When you've spent much of your life doing one thing, and that one thing draws to a close, it's not unreasonable to decide to do something completely the opposite next. So for Bry Webb to make his first post- Constantines record Provider a quiet, mainly acoustic affair only stands to reason - particularly for anyone who heard him operating as Harbourcoats before the Cons went on hiatus. But to suggest that Provider is just the Cons frontman gone unplugged is a grave [...]

Elbow at The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles by Sadie Whittaker October 1st, 2011 "Is everyone ok?" Elbow are a new band that have been around for 20 years. Currently, on their fifth album release, they have risen to mainstream popularity in the UK, catapulted into the limelight by [...]

Jonathan Taggart As one of the most social media-savvy musicians in the country, it's not unreasonable to say that Dan Mangan reads his own press and so he's probably seen the phrases "everyman", "coffee shop", "roots-rock" and variants thereof in regards to his breakout 2009 record Nice, Nice, Very Nice many, many times. And while these descriptors were usually meant in most complimentary ways - one does't make the Polaris shortlist on the back of negative press - his just-released follow-up Oh Fortune [...]
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter have just announced a batch of new tour dates, including a set of East Coast appearances with the Sadies, which sounds like a dream line-up. Their latest album, Marble Son, released in early August, which we labeled as PopMatters Pick with an 8 rating. Tour dates after the jump.

Anton Corbijn It only took about six minutes via Twitter to announce the forty albums long-listed for the sixth edition of the Polaris Music Prize , we'll have the next three weeks to argue over their relative merits and come July 6, when the ten record-strong short list is announced, another couple months to hash those out before the September 19 gala in Toronto when a yet-to-be-determined grand jury declares their pick for the best Canadian album of the past year. And there's more at stake this year than in the past, [...]
Stop the mother effing presses, y'all! Our buddies at Rollo & Grady just broke the news that King Khan, Demon Claws' Jeff Clarke and his girlfriend Emily, the Spits' Sean Wood, and the Sadies are forming a Kukamonga Death Cult country western band and record an album. The Black Angels in April ( more by Dana (Distortion) Yavin ) "It was a welcome sensory overload, ears full of rapturous music, eyes bright with swirling luminescence, inhaling with every breath the cloying smells of sweat and marijuana, every person crammed together, swaying as if one large amorphous being. They left you feeling lost, adrift in their music, tethered and grounded only by the rattling sensation that vibrated through the floors, walls, and ceiling from the beat. All in all, it was an intense experience that I am very glad to have witnessed." [ [...]
