All of the local media articles commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Horseshoe Tavern (officially celebrating its birthday yesterday) have run off a list of the unforgettable shows that have earned the Queen West institution its adjective "Legendary" - Golden Smog, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Rolling Stones", to name a few. And while I've seen my share of great shows there over the years - hell, over the past week - the venue's own birthday party on Thursday night was one for the ages. Though the performers were kept secret when the invite-only party [...]

Work's been keeping me real busy lately, but I'm getting enough good tunes on XM Radio to make my music discovery a bit easier. I've decided to post tracks that I discover on XM Radio and give credit where credit is due. You'll see these XM Tracks posts on a regular basis (or at least for as long as I'm an XM subscriber). Most recently I heard two great songs, one by The Sadies and the other by Jose Gonzalez. I've since jumped into The Sadies's full album called New Season on [...]

The Trial - The Sadies . mp3

Fijne alt-country. MP3: The Sadies - The Trial The Sadies op MySpace Subscribe [...]
With the end of the year approaching, it's time once again for the 2007 edition of the Hottest Bands in Canada survey. And in the end, it was close. Even with over 30 panelists and 150 bands receiving votes, it was close. And I'm talking insanely, nail-bitingly, one-point-separating-#1-from-# 2, "it could've gone either way if one person had even reversed the order in their ballot" close, with the difference being a ballot submitted about 30 seconds before I went to hit "Publish". But [...]
THIS WEEK'S FINDS Oct. 28-Nov. 3 "Be Unhappy" - Maritime I like how the basic, wet-blanket lyrical twist here--"Even if you find the love of your life/You could be unhappy for weeks at a time"--is mirrored in the music: at the heart of this peppy, summer-sunny tune are recurring suspended chords that block our sense of simple fulfillment (they're laid out right in the intro, at :03 and :06), like persistent clouds on a beach day. And listen to the guitar that plays these chords--a smooth, old-fashioned-sounding thing [...]
THIS WEEK'S FINDS Oct. 14-20 "Dead Sound" - the Raveonettes Simple and dense, loud and whispery, retro-y and up-to-date, "Dead Sound" continues this Danish duo's studied--and catchy--deconstruction of American rock'n'roll music from the late '50s and early '60s. What you hear here is what they do: take chords and melodies and guitar sounds that feel old-fashioned and familiar and mash them onto a wacked-out Phil Spector meets My Bloody Valentine assault of difficult-to-pin-down noise. These guys are sticklers for detail and like to constrain themselves (their first album, [...]
THIS WEEK'S FINDS Oct. 14-20 "Make a Plan" - Saturday Looks Good to Me Deftly built with riffs and sounds and cheery vocals, "Make a Plan" is infused with a charming sort of handmade vibe, like something modeled unexpectedly yet expertly with masking tape and cardboard. The introduction is an immediate example of the odd but sturdy construction I'm talking about--first we get the buoyant acoustic strum, straight out of a Harry Belafonte record or some such thing, then a thin slice of vague and fuzzy electric guitar, [...]
After a wonderful September stacked to the brim with great releases, one would think that October would pale in comparison. This week seems to prove otherwise, as there are some worthwhile albums to look out for. Starting off with my obvious choice, PJ Harvey's White Chalk - which i've held off listening to till tonight. I'll probably review this one later in the week, but i've mentioned it enough times here on the site for everyone to know what's in store with Polly Jean's new musical direction. Another release that i'm sure is up there for [...]

i can't quite figure out how to describe the way i'm feeling about this new springsteen album, i mean i really like it, it's good, but after all i heard about a return to form, i guess i was hoping for more...so i started reading other reviews, thinking maybe i'd find something i agreed with, that i could steal or change into my own words, but almost everything i read was saying what i expected, that it was fantastic, his best album since born in the u.s.a. ...& they're probably right, but he hasn't really had any [...]

Within the last month, I've been to a number of festivals around Southern Ontario which could lay claim to the title of "most laid back music fest in the province" - first Hillside , then Wolfe Island and finally this past Sunday, one to out-mellow them all, Dog Day Afternoon . Less a festival than a backyard party on a farm just outside of Guelph, Dog Day has been going on for some eight years (give or take?) and slowly growing each time but based on this year's, at a very slow pace. [...]
Today would be the one year mark for this site's existence. Perusing the archives you can see a little bit of paradigm shifting in musical taste which is a good thing I guess. According to the site traffic and feed stats we actually have an audience and actual readership (which isn't that much but its still p cool). So thanks for making chinese restaurant in the forest* relevant. Special thanks to Squashed , Moka , Funtime OK , mp3blog.ch , Shay , boomawang , bbqchickenrobot [...]

You know the drill: rock legend dies; spend rest of week revisiting the catalogue and sifting through assorted ephemera. Like this, Syd Barrett 's high school photo (courtesy of Ben Rayner, whose dad was in Syd's class). You'll find the young madcap three rows down from the top, fifth from left. Syd also had a friend who witnessed his first acid tip, realized it was going to be a historical event, and decided to film it [...]
