Frank Yang There was a stretch a few years ago when it seemed like there was a domino effect with record stores in Toronto closing up shop - a moment of silence for Flash & Crash, Driftwood, CD Exchange, Urban Sound Exchange, Edward's Record World, CD Replay, Second Spin, Sam The Record Man, Music World and a special tear for Stinky's (aka Cactus) back in Oakville. This was alarming-- this was a crucial part of the musical ecosystem being clear-cut and no how the digital zealots wanted to spin it, mass extinction of music brick-and-mortar retail is [...]

This was alarming on so many levels; personally, because I spent more than a few weekends digging through their bins for stuff and if they went away, I'd have to find [...]

With so many artists now escaping the traditional structure of annual release dates in order to reveal new music on a monthly basis, it's always a treat to find an outstanding band that has the presence of mind to take this trend and make it work in their favour... with two songs a month to boot!! I'd like to think we pay close attention to updated information on the musicians we feature but,
Listening: 1. The Salteens : This Vancouver band formed back in 1997, and released two albums in the early part of this decade. i know i have an eclectic weird taste in dance music, mainly because dancing for me means jumping around the room flailing my arms any which way and my body wriggling in ways i didn't even know possible. hehe. so... these are the songs that make me go that way. nice day - the salteens the salteens is a pop band from canada, and this song is from their let go of your bad days album, which you can buy here . whenever i [...]

Vancouver is not a sunny place. It rains seven months of the year and is cloudy the other five. Perhaps because of this, much of the music produced in the city is often dark, heavy, or depressing... or at least it seems that way. The Salteens , however, definitely do not sound like any of those things. They are Vancouver's finest purveyors of bright, shiny pop songs laden with summery melodies and punctured with bursts of horns. While the band has been quiet over the past few years, 2008 sees them returning to the spotlight with an [...]

I'm hitting the road tomorrow, and I made a hip mix for a hip drive. It is very cold in Minneapolis, so I traced a theme of warmth throughout the mix. Work it. Download: Bon Iver - "Flume" Download: Animal Collective - "Fireworks" Download: Hot Chip - "Ready for the Floor" Download: Belaire - "Step Step Step" Download: Belle & Sebastian - "The Fox In The Snow" Download: Bishop Allen - "Rain" Download: Of Montreal - "Du Og Meg" [...]

Since discovering The Airfields way back in Summer of 2005 , it's been a treat watching them evolve. The trip may have been slow and occasionally difficult but each signpost along the way, from the whispery 4-track under the bedcovers charm of their debut City-State through the unexpected confidence of 2006's Laneways EP and then last year's limited edition teaser Yr So Wonderful , pointed to great things just down the road. And now, with the release of their debut full-length [...]

Easily, the best band name I have heard in a while. Or at least, a name I really love. I figure they aren't getting music blog-o-webnet exposure because they don't have a foxy female singer (like Rilo Kiley). Oh, wait. They DO have a foxy female singer. So maybe the Duke can help them generate more interweb interest. As for their music? Poppy, fun and great for singing along. Listen: Time You Have Been Wasting Let Go Of Your Bad Days [...]

A continuation of the other night's discoveries at SXSW 2005 , old friends and new. The Capitol Years - Mounds of Money mp3 The Paybacks - Bright Side mp3 The Pretty [...]

This vibraphone belongs to John Vanderslice Hylozoists don't score films, but they should. Their debut, La Fin Du Monde , is a fluttering jumble of Jon Brion I Heart Huckabees flourishes and rhythmic Morricone-isms, horn squelches and woozy vibraphones. The mostly instrumental album is kind of a weird fit for the otherwise pop-oriented Boompa Records (you shold check out the Salteens), but if we can't hear this at the movies, scenic drives down Pacific Coast Highway will have to suffice. Hylozoists - "The [...]
