It's a hell of a time to be a music fan living on the West Coast. And though I can hardly see any coast from where I sit (No, a man made lake doesn't count) I'd still lump Arizona in with the recent renaissance of music happening on the warmer side of the map. The hotbed is obviously the LA/SF scene and that's where The Sandwitches reside. "Back To The Sea" wouldn't have been out of place some 40 years ago blasting out of a Woodie on the way to the beach. It must be pretty awesome to [...]

We've been checking out Sirius radio again since we got the new car with the 3 month trial and we have to say it's great for us indie music fans. The XMU channel showcases a lot of the music we listen to and host shows from the big blogs we check out regularly like gorillavsbear , Aquarium Drunkard , Hipster Runoff , Brooklyn Vegan , and our local Indianapolis one, My Old Kentucky Home They have live in studio interviews and performance of new and [...]

Beck - "Harry Partch" ; The history of the musical feud dates back centuries probably, but in the last few decades it has really been the bearer of some terrific music at the hands of the hated on. This week Beck responded to all this Matt Friedberger (of The Fiery Furnaces) vs. Radiohead vs. Himself controversy with a song dedicated to late composer Harry Partch. Now that's not the same Harry Patch that Radiohead dedicated a song to. This little tune featuring snippets from Fiery Furnaces' songs and Partch's own composition structure really takes Friedberger to town. To [...]

[mp3] The Sandwitches: "Back to the Sea" [mp3] The Sandwitches: "Idiot Savant" Thanks to the great folks at Turn Up we've been rocking the new record from San Francisco's The Sandwitches. From their tongue-in-cheek album name How to Make Ambient Sadcake to that creepy-ass cat, The Sandwitches come at you from many different places on their new album. There are elements of throwback doo-wop alongside of catchy west-coast Fleetwood Mac-tinged indie-pop. Whatever you call it, Heidi Alexander and Grace Cooper make music that [...]
Here's the latest of our sporadic round-ups of new and recent discoveries. We posted about the new EP from Loch Lomond recently, and they have also made a track from their new split 12" with Builders & Butchers available. It is called Field Report and is another top notch track that has been on heavy rotation here at MM. They can always be relied upon for a great lyric and they don't disappoint

Click here and you will be on your way to the third episode of Weekly Tape Deck radio on Indie-Verse. Picture this. You're a musician. You're in a local band that's created a steady fan base. You want to test the waters of your talent, so you accept a challenge that matches you randomly with four other people to form a band. You then have 8 hours to come up with two original songs and one cover with these people whose musical limitations are potentially a mystery. Following the minimal time spent conjuring up and practicing these songs, you must perform them in front of a full audience of your Columbus peers. Oh, and on top of all that, this [...]
Sunday, November 15, 2009 I almost forget how to write a column about music, that's how much of a shmuck I've been over the course of the last two, three months of not in any way fulfilling my responsibilities as author of The Good, The Bad, and The Misunderstood. I would say this is an apology, but it's not. I'm more excited as I've listened to countless new albums in the last two, or three months and have nothing but the good, the good, and the good to thrust [...]

Received a copy of The Sandwitches How To Make Ambient Sadcake in the mail last week and its been spinning on the turntable ever since. It's a hard nugget to crack, with those sweet girl group overtones and harmonies one minute then the slow burn of gothic folk the next. Their approach is eclectic in style but somehow ends up feeling like one big picture once you back up just a few feet. The dissolution of the American dream from the Shagri-Las to Box Car folk, dust bowl Americana to smoldering 70's arena ballad femme fatales; its all [...]

First heard of The Sandwitches in this choice post , then out of nowhere I find their latest LP, How To Make Ambient Sadcake , magically appear in my mailbox. This trio from the Bay Area has some ridiculously catchy tunes and their album is a mishmash of different styles ranging from blues, folk and lo-fi garage. Several spins through and this could very well be one of the better albums released this year. This marks the very first release from the Turn Up! record label and if they keep dropping goods like this, they might [...]

While I'm still not ready to call the West Coast, the Best Coast yet, it has been churning out some impressively eclectic tunes recently. From the ramshackle, to the dreamy and guitar-driven these tunes showcase some pretty exciting young acts from the other coast. The Sandwitches mix male and female vocals with some banjo for a delightfully rundown singalong. The Sandwitches - Back to the Sea ( YSI ) ( filesavr ) Hailing from LA, Nite Jewel is like an early night in a big city after daylight savings makes it dark too [...]
Living in San Francisco right now is a little like standing a swirling tornado of lo-fi, garage-y goodness. It's a big blustery terrain and oft times, this wind can overwhelm. You fight to stand up. You futilely reach out to grab the leg of a passing cat. It can be a little much. But in the [...]

the sandwitches The Sandwitches is the new project from Heidi Alexander + Grace Cooper , both formerly of like-minded SF band the Fresh & Onlys . The group's new record How to Make Ambient Sadcake (out now on new SF label Turn Up ) has been described as "what it would sound like for a band on Woodsist to cover Fleetwood Mac's... Tusk " and also " a [...]

King Khan & The Shrines - "Land of the Freak" King Khan & The Shrines have a day off this Wednesday before their Thursday night Great American Music Hall show, but instead of taking it easy, they'll be hosting and DJing a party at Amnesia . Billed as "Shrine's Night", the party will also feature "a revue of lost but not forgotten soul, doo-wop, and 50s/60s Rock & Roll" by members of awesome local bands including Thee Oh Sees , Jonesin' , [...]
