Tweet Just a final reminder about Wednesday night's benefit show for the Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco . Four great bands, one of SF's historic venues: this is going to be a great time. Also: there will be a warm coat drive held at the show. Bring any warm coats to donate on Wednesday night! Thee Oh Sees Sic Alps Ty Segall [...]
You know what's awesome about February? It's one step closer to Noise Pop, Fauxchella, and SXSW. It may be a little slow, but there are plenty of reasons not to go to bed early this week. Thursday, February 3rd The Nels Cline Singers w/ Yuka C Honda, Paul Riola Quintet at The Independent Nels Cline [...]
One of the seemingly infinite amount of things that are great about the ever-changing world of music, aside from its constantly evolving sounds, are the ways in which people come up with to market it in innovative ways. Earth Girl Helen Brown is the latest in line to pleasantly surprise me. At the risk of spoiling Sonny Smith's expertly underhand scheming, it turns out that Earth Girl Helen Brown isn't actually real at all, or at least not further than the songs she's recorded. Helen Brown is actually just the artist name on one of the vinyl records of Smith's [...]

Tweet On Wednesday, February 9th, four of San Francisco's best bands come together for a night of rock and roll to benefit the Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco . Add to that the fact that the Great American Music Hall remains one of the City's best (and best-sounding) venues, and we're excited to be a part of what should be an excellent show. Thee Oh Sees Sic Alps Ty Segall [...]

Tweet A great show at a historic venue. The Bay Bridged will be presenting. More info to come.
I love Sonny Smith. Like, really. I like him when he's fronting Sonny & The Sunsets, I really like him when he's fronting Sonny & The Sandwitches, and now I can add a third thing he does that I adore. Last year he recorded 100 Records, where he recorded 100 singles for 100 imaginary bands. [...]
Sonny Smith, my love for you continues to grow. After just releasing the second collection 73 singles for his 100 Records art project (DCed right here), featuring a beloved track by Earth Girl Helen Brown amongst it's clang and clatter, Sir Smith has now gone the next step and with the help of a few [...]

Coming from a rather extreme personal past history, Earth Girl Helen Brown's debut EP ( Story of an Earth Girl ) channels her upbringing into a mix of 60s pop and folk psychedelia. A product of Sonny Smith's ultra ambitious 100 Records Project , EGHB features a slew of fellow San Fransiscans. Including (but not limited to) Heidi Alexander and Grace Cooper of the Sandwitches , John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees and (of course) Sonny Smith of Sonny and the Sunsets . Now added to the Forest Family roster, this [...]

The next release on our Forest Family imprint is the debut record from the soulful, "nomadic psychedelic folksinger" Earth Girl Helen Brown : a “unique mix of country, girl group, R&B, and ghoulishness,” brought to life by Sonny Smith of Sonny & the Sunsets , with help from Heidi Alexander + Grace Cooper of the Sandwitches , John Dwyer of the Oh Sees, Kelly Stoltz , and others. One of my personal favorite FF releases so far. Here's Helen's story, as Sonny tells it: [...]

I just wrote up the fantastic San Francisco label Secret Seven Records. To further concrete them as the bastions of amazing music they are, they're giving you the opportunity to win one of three vinyl copies of their mind-blowing music. For the opportunity to win either Sonny and The Sunsets Tomorrow Is Alright, The Sandwitches Duck, [...]

All month long, all San Francisco/Bay Area bands. That's the rub. Get with it. - When I decided to write a label showcase for San Francisco's up-and-comer Secret Seven I dipped back in to The Daily Choice archives to see if by chance, I'd focused on this label's output in the past. And sure enough, I have, [...]
All month long (aside from one recently discovered error) I'm exploring the sonic scene of San Francisco and the Bay Area beyond. Quite a ride dear sir, quite a ride indeed. - I know, I've already written about Sonny Smith and his almighty Sunsets. I've already proclaimed my love for his band and his songwriting and the [...]
Sharon Van Etten "Love More" ::: photo by Josh Lovseth If my 2010 was a mix tape (or a couple mix tapes as it were), these would be the tracks. These were the songs that were my most frequent and adored companions of 2010. They're the songs I'll know the words to for the rest of [...]
This is Part 4 of The Tale of The Tape's Year End Best of Series : Music Videos As my list took shape I thought it was notable for what wasn't on it: Kanye's "Runaway" and "Power," Lady Gaga's "Telephone," any "found video," and even Health's horror show cut "We Are Water." I had it backwards, the list is notable for what's on it: two cuts from Spike Jonze, one from Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz, of course), Shannyn Sossamon's directorial debut for her former band (Warpaint), the son of Costa Gavras'-Romain Gavras-police state screed for [...]

Douglas Martin heard The Sandwitches can make one hell of a Grilled Cheese. The time has come. December. The month out of the year where people who get paid (and sometimes not) to think too much about music have to bang their collective and individual heads against their desks and try to put a bunch of records, tapes, CD’s, and mp3s into some sort of contextual framework, trying to either figure out What It All Means or provide a handy little consumer’s guide for their readers. With so much being focused on what happened [...]

Not long ago, Sonny Smith (Sonny & The Sunsets) survived a near-drowning off the coast of northern california. The experience affected him profoundly and led to a wealth of output including a play, a novel, and a stack of songs. Sonny's critically acclaimed "100 Records" project is itself a direct product of Sonny's fight with the sea. A novel he began, "Adelard the Drowned", broke into 100 pieces. Four of those pieces come as songs on this 7" e.p., each bound to the next by a twisted braid of water and death. Through the fog and the haze, however, there [...]
