David Bowie. There, I've said it now. I know it's always a bit cheapening to make some easy comparison to such a hugely influential artist from old but sometimes it's just completely unavoidable. It's like calling Viva Brother an "Oasis cover band covering The Beatles". Although they would probably take that as the compliment that it was never intended as. Not like being compared to ol' Ziggy is ever a bad thing. 'Sapien Express' is taken from new album Avocado Chip by Londoner Ben Sommers and it's a track that's as weird and delicious [...]

Royal Sapien is New York graphic designer, DJ and producer. He got in contact to tell us the he had been making a mix for the last 5 months that had 300 tracks and was only a hour long - to put it in perspective our last mix was 17 tracks in 1 hour. This is somehow 300. We immediately thought anyone who has spent this amount of time is truly devoted and is worth a listen - what we weren't expecting was a mix full of hundreds of layers of tracks stack up seamlessly to deliver a [...]

Newly formed (debuted April of this year) Chicago outfit Blane Fonda , featuring former front man of Technicolour Stallion , Mark Wetzel , and The Sapiens sans front man, just this month released a seven song EP titled Master of Stars and Broken Arms . Blane Fonda has received a lot of great press, including the honor of being The Deli's Chicago Artist of Month. We're excited to bring you "Salacious Love," a slick and lusty three and a half minute track sandwiched right in the [...]
Blane Fonda is a Chicago-based band featuring former members from dance-punk rockers The Sapiens as well as the singer of Technicolour Stallions , Mark Wetzel. They have sent us their first single, "Opportunity Rocks," from the forthcoming Blane Fonda record Master of Stars and Broken Arms , which is a 7 song EP that will be released 8/13/09. Keeping with their dance punk influences, Blane Fonda creates some good rock. "Opportunity Rocks" is part anthem, part punk. Ambient Distorted guitar fill your ears while the light touches of synthesizers grace [...]

Thanks to Charlie Nader for sending me this tip on Chicago based artists, The Sapiens, and their new single, "Rind." You can check out the band's website , Myspace , or see them out live at the following spots: Sept 24th @ Reggies, Chicago w/Killola and The Action Design, Sept 27th @ Valparaiso University (ARC) - Sourcestock w/Relient K. I don't usually like posting a lot of the rock music we get: and we get a lot. Most of it, in my opinion isn't very good or I just can't manipulate it the way I want to. With The Sapiens I was very impressed by their track 'Good To Lose' off the single "Rind." It's full of energy, constantly moving, has tons of potential to be remixed or just mixed into by an eclectic DJ... and it's just a good track to listen to without any of the DJ bullshit. If you're in the Chicago [...]

The Sapiens are trying really hard. Really, really hard. Don't get me wrong. These are some talented Chicago boys. Equal parts Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, Killers, Smashmouth and Rolling Stones. Sound like a bizarre mashup ? It could be, but it isn't. Instead, it's ineffectual and drab. Uninspired. My first instinct was to recoil from the Sapiens . To denounce them outright. But something made me listen to their stuff a few more times. And again. And again. [...]

W ho the hell never wanted to have a band? We do all the time but we don't have the guts... we're not born for that, that's why we have the blog so we can be around in the new music scene. So we received the release and some songs from The Sapiens guys. And we wandered about the energy and love you need to spent to make it happen. Imagine yourself touring to show your work and expect the return in this modern-fast world. Fun, but not easy. The Sapiens are a [...]

I've been putting off this latest Incoming installment because I've been waging a war within myself. What should be done about the email submissions received I either don't have enough time to listen to within a respectable time frame, or the ones that just don't do it for me? This blog is just a hobby, and sometimes it's hard to squeeze it in amongst all the other stuff you've gotta think about when you're a grown up person with, like, responsibilities and whatnot. I do enjoy receiving submissions, and I think it's important to feature only those that [...]

One of the downsides of having a blind janitor s ending up with trash bags full of crap and treasures & you always end up diggin deep into shit. Have look in todays trashbag, see what valuables you can find. This is my new ringonte, Justice's Phanton Pt. II played completely using an actual Gameboy ... you gotta check out the nifty 8-bit distortion on your mobile phone. it rawks! DL: [...]
Real Ones will release their second single, Ballad Of An Old Man, through Breaking Records on June 30th. Comprising two brothers and three lifelong friends from Bergen, Norway, Real Ones folk-tinged, Eastern influenced Scandi-pop music has a habit of building melody upon melody and projecting them with the beauty and sweetness of three-part harmonies. Where acoustic guitars and tumbling drum sweeps weave with the lesser-known surreal sound of Eastern instruments such as the Bouzouki and Indian Jaisalmer violin, Real Ones are bringing a gentle touch of the East to a broader audience. [...]

Chicago band The Sapiens have a new single. The title track is called Rind , comes with a Stonesy backbeat and it deserves airplay on any College Radio show that wants to wake up their listeners with some nice hooks in the early morning. Flutterin' Eyelids and Good To Loose serve as the other tracks on this new single. MP3: The Sapiens - Rind Upcoming live dates: 06/25 Amplify Showcase @ Schubas, Chicago, IL 07/12 [...]

It's been a long time since I listened to anything that could be classified as punk music. For the most part I'm sick of the pop punk genre. So I'll admit it was with more than a little hesitation that I gave The Sapiens a listen. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised with a frenetic style of classic seventies revival meets pure punk gyration. The energy in these studio tracks is astounding and it's a nice break from the endless radio friendly crooner or the ever present bass heavy remix. mp3 : The Sapiens [...]

The Sapiens MySpace Album: Vs. The Hornet The Sapiens -- "Void" Review: That's some tasty tasty high-hat work. The Sapiens -- "Waitress Waitress" Review: Otis Redding singing about fried eggs and bagels...

The Sapiens When I say Chicago music scene what is the first thing that comes to mind? I suppose it would depend on your age, but for me the early 90's were not as much about Seattle as they were about Chicago. There were about a couple of bald headed guys (Billy Corgan & Josh Caterer), Certain Distant Suns, Jesus Lizard, Veruca Salt, and so on. Today the scene is much more eclectic, when critics compile their lists of bands to watch in Chicago they may include a few hip hop acts, or an [...]

Its eleven days shy of the Ides Of March and for what it's worth, The Sapiens are not only the first band of March to review, but they play great music as well. Being from a city as musically diverse as Chicago doesn't hurt either. Between it's basketball, it's deep dish pizza, and not to [...]
