Thanks to my father's determination to visit all 50 US states in his lifetime, we've just returned from a short vacation, and as is our practice here at Cover Lay Down, that means a feature with a regional focus. Previous Vacation Coverfolk sets took us to California , the Carolinas , Memphis , and more; this week found us in Nebraska, and so we turn to the work of a particularly influential musician with a decidedly midwestern origin. Ladies and Gentlemen: Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes . [...]

Some may remember a previous post on The Sarcastic Dharma Society being featured on a playlist a while back for his cover of Pedro the Lion ( see here) . You might have thought you needed more? Worry no more, we have more lo-fi goodness released for free download! Mat Vuksinich who records as Sarcastic Dharma Society continues to impress - whether it is his increasing series of recordings at CLLCT or the ease at which he creates these moments of homespun musical perfection. The new album "Sannyasa Songs (of Love)" are lo-fi beauty, catch, pop [...]

The Sarcastic Dharma Society From: Portland, Oregon, United States I love the name The Sarcastic Dharma Society. Possibly because, despite popular belief, sarcasm is the highest form of wit; or maybe it's because it sounds like one of the only society's that would have me as a member. So I was doubly joyed to discover that the band behind the brilliant name have a fine line in simply adorable [...]
Illustration: Amy Adele I've undertaken the task of ordering moving boxes. Kallogiannakis. Pakohart.gr. There are choices. Do I want a Full Overlap Box, a Five Panel Folder, or a Half-Slotted Container? How many of them? 5, 11, 20. The non-dilemma of what comes and what stays behind. Books, Cds - they come with. Keep them as they are, alphabetized. Box 1: Books: A-C. Box 2: Books D-F. Box 3: Books G. I have lots of Gs. It's a good system. No furniture. No decorative objects from my room. All will be new. Also: stack of letters [...]

I'm gonna keep it as short as the previous ones, just because it's already the 7th of January. I should be listening to 500 2010 records right now! I promised myself I'd provide more regular updates, maybe in a different form than I used to. Oh, and I'll finish my unknown bands from last decade list. Eventually. 20. La Strada - La Strada (EP) ( Ernest Jenning Recording Company ) What? The New [...]

My nephew's matching lunchbox and schoolbag Today is the first day of September which means, I guess, the end of summer and the start of the school year for many kids and a few teachers. It's also the very first day of school for many little boys and girls around the world who'll be embarking on a wonderful adventure as they start to learn about the alphabet, numbers, painting and how to send text messages on their brand new mobile phones. They'll also get to meet new friends and spend a few hours a day away [...]

this compilation is about free-music! ...not only the newest tracks, simply just those, who i enjoied most in the last 10 month of maintaining the lemonjohn-blog . i decided to inlcude only tracks which can be described with the genres: indie-pop-rock-folk, because there's currently a really big net-scene about free-electronic music, but it seems to be nearly forgotten that there are lots of amazing artists in those genres who also give their music away for free. (not saying that the electronic-music-scene hasn't brought some real musical-diamonds to my [...]

It is true, I am delving into the fray (not the band, cuz that's weird) and putting out a Sunday Mixlist. It is almost a blogger tradition to put out playlists/mixtapes/themed musical collections. I tend to try and theme some (see ladies night/men's night), but sometimes I find it a bit of a chore to "theme" a list - then you get music that you might not have ever put on a list together, but because the title matches some theme - it all of a sudden is good enough to post? But maybe that is the idea behind it, [...]

The logic board on my imac seems to have fried. It was working fine one day and then it was zapped completely the next. I'm using my roommates computer right now but have no access to my mp3s. I am hoping that my hard drive is unaffected by all of this and will have to invest in a new macbook . Hopefully I'll be up and running soon. In the meantime I will see if I can pull anything from my inbox or maybe I'll motivate myself to rip some cds . [...]

Photo Source Travels - "My Funny Valentine" One of the first postings at Said the Gramophone to achieve any recognition was a contest we held for the song "My Funny Valentine". It is my favourite jazz standard and I asked for covers that rivaled Chet Baker's. Nobody really did. And so I am happy that in Travels' version of "My Funny Valentine", released special for Saint Valentine's Day, they take their inspiration from Baker. This is a song undersung, underplayed. It is not whispered, [...]

You Should Know You folks always go batshit crazy for covers, so today I introduce you to The Sarcastic Dharma Society, the moniker for Portland musician Mat Vuksinich, who has just put out an album of covers entitled Other People's Songs: Volume 1 . Vuksinich's music would best be desribed as lo-fi bedroom pop, and song choices such as Mount Eerie's "You Swan Go On" and Julie Doiron's "Untitled" lend nicely to his sound. The tracks are mostly stripped down affairs built around acoustic guitar and Magnus [...]

Who? The Sarcastic Dharma Society What? Soothing bedroom pop Sounds like? Mt. Eerie and the lo-fi pop family, Jacob Borshard, etc. Don't we all like covers? I do at least, and i'm always on the lookout for covers of songs I like. I'm not gonna write an essay about covers, but if you look for some very nice interpretations of indie songs by Bright Eyes and Clem Snide, you have to listen to the covers album by The Sarcastic Dharma Society called 'Other's [...]

So we haven't done a covers post in quite a long time and were feeling quite guilty so we're gonna make up for it. And our timing is perfect because... The Sarcastic Dharma Society ...happen to have a new covers album out. I have good news and even better news and amazing news about it, which one do you want to hear first? The good news is that we're talking covers of such artists as Julie Doiron, Why?, [...]
