ward robinson Middle Class is Mike Atta, Jeff Atta, Matt Simon and Mike Patton (no, not that Mike Patton). Depending on who you ask, you might be told they are the first ever hardcore band, or you might get kicked in the gut with a pre-scuffed Urban Outfitters combat boot. After a very long spell, the band reunited last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Frontier Records—the label that put out Middle Class' 1979 EP, "Out of Vogue." Now they're returning to the Echoplex to play a badass L.A. RECORD show [...]
MP3: Screaming Females - "I Do" Though Screaming Females are currently concluding their tour with Jeff the Brotherhood and have just released their latest album on Don Giovanni Records, the future only looks even brighter for the guitar-shredding New Jersey act. When March rolls around, the band will be opening for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. It kicks off in Texas, but on April 9 both Ted Leo and the Screaming Females will be playing on stage at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. All dates are below. [...]
Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal is widely lauded in today's history books as a bold measure to stem the tide and reverse the rot of the Great Depression. This despite the fact that U.S. domestic policy actual in subsequent decades, has done everything in it's power to dismantle said measures. However much like activist measures originating from the left today, the New Deal (and by extension Roosevelt) was reviled and feared by the right wing corporate ruling class of the 1930's. In the summer of 1933, shortly after Roosevelt's "First 100 Days," [...]
Every one of Stalin's houses had its own private cinema, and in his last years, the cinema became not only his favourite entertainment but also a source of political inspiration. It was one of the venues from which he ruled the Soviet Empire: this was cinematocracy - rule by cinema. Stalin loved movies, but he was much more than a movie-buff. The new Communist Party archives in Moscow, and the recently opened personal papers of Stalin, reveal that he fancied himself a super-movie-producer/director/ screenwriter as well as supreme censor, suggesting titles, ideas and stories, working on scripts and [...]
The Screamers: 122 Hours Of Fear
By David Seldan Watch more on Network Awesome History, even punk history, is written by the winners. In the late 70's, just before the straight edge aggro of hardcore swept the board, there bloomed in L.A a punk scene that was as musically adventurous as its suburban SoCal counterpart was orthodox. The light that burns the brightest often burns only briefly and for three or four years L.A was in flames. Among those fueling the fire were [...]

Massive Dubstep News #15

The Book Report – The Beautiful & The Damned
In an effort to expand our horizons and turn you on to some really cool new books concerning music, this is The Book Report , an ongoing series from guest contributor Christopher Ambrose. Text by: Christopher Ambrose for The Sky Report The Beautiful & The Damned: Punk Photographs by Anna Summa With everyone and their roommate posturing as a rock photographer with their underwhelming cellphone-camera snapshots of performances, it's inspiring to see the conscious images of someone that knows and cares about what they are doing inside a setting [...]

The Art of Synth-Punk: An A/V Playlist
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

Sunday Mix Tape Number 154
Apologies for the late post. It's already early Monday morning (as in, past midnight) and I have been busy from the moment I awoke Sunday morning. This is the first chance I've had to sit down and focus at all on a blog post. Lucky for me I can compile a Sunday Mix Tape relatively quickly and still get to bed at a reasonable hour. There's almost no thought involved. A new reader/friend commented the other day that I have a "keen sense of music," so I decided to try my hardest to share as many new artists [...]
