A couple of these will be coming out in the next few weeks and some are already out. A couple might have been around for awhile but have just recently made it to my ears. The constant but wonderful onslaught of new music is at times overwhelming but in the end nice. I have not even done proper justice to the promo emails I receive everyday and I know that I am missing some good stuff. I need to set aside one whole day to dig thru the emails instead of just passing them by. There [...]

For the second week in a row (and the second week of this segment's existence), we're talking about a band from Chicago. It also happens to be another band that's near and dear to my heart. Yes, 1994's self-titled debut album by The Sea and Cake worked its way into my heart like a worm burrowing into some moist dirt. Essentially a supergroup made up of legendary Chicago musicians Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge (of Shrimp Boat) along with John McEntire (of Tortoise) and Archer Prewitt (of Coctails), the band was supposed to be a one-off side project. After that [...]
It's that simple really. Listen: Dntel - Rock My Boat (ft Mia Doi Todd) [from Dumb Luck (out 4.24) Fountains of Wayne - Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim [from Traffic and Weather (out 4.3)] The Sea and Cake - Lightning [from Everybody (out 5.7)] Feist - The Limit to Your Love [from The Reminder (out 5.1)]

It's been a really busy week and I realize I'm acting like a neglectent blogger, but spring break is this week so I think things will slow down and I'll have more music and some more show reviews to share. An album that I've had on rotation this week is the upcoming album from The Sea and the Cake , Everybody . I've listened to a bit of their 2003 One Bedroom and enjoyed the breezy, laid back feel, but while Everbody retains many of these qualities it's a much more direct sound. "Crossing [...]

All too often, trying to please everybody leads to pleasing no one. When it comes to the the Sea and Cake , it's a bit different. Their liberal mix of rock, free jazz, soothing vocals and almost jammed out riffs has made them one of the most consistent bands in my arsenal. I'm always able to throw on an album and within one or two tracks I'm caught up in Prekop's vocals and Prewitt's unique ability to support the vocals with interesting melodies. It's been four years since the release of One Bedroom , and [...]
<img title="The Sea And Cake" src=" http://www.bornbytheriver. com/artists/seaandcake.jpg"/> I think it would probably be impossible to dislike Sam Prekop's voice. That said, it would be hard for The Sea and Cake to put out a bad record. Everything they release is going to at least sound pleasant. They kind of have an unfair advantage. I received an advance copy of The Sea and Cake's upcoming album, Everybody , a few days ago. I've only had a chance to listen to [...]
THE SEA AND CAKE "Everybody" Whoa. The Sea And Cake have made a classic rock album. Parts yacht rock, parts dueling guitars, parts bouncy 60s pop, Everybody is certainly for everybody. I'm smitten after two listens. What grabs you is the actual sound of this record, a little different from their previous offerings. My favorite song so far is "Middlenight", almost like a

so far, 2007 is an insane year for music, and especially already-established bands. albums are leaking every which way ( Modest Mouse , Arcade Fire , Kings Of Leon , Frog Eyes ....), "indie" acts are overturning "pop" acts to debut at 12 on the Billboard album charts ( Bloc Party , anyone?), and even random bands that i found way back in the day are trying out their careers all over again. look at this! The Sea And Cake . no, no, i'm not even remotely kidding. i guarantee [...]

With most bands, there tends to be one member who leads the way. You know, the leader who is responsible for most of the songwriting and instrumental organization. Though Sam Prekop is the vocalist of The Sea and Cake , he is by no means the sole leader. Prekop is fortunate enough to have the aid of three other musicians who are just as ambitious and at least as talented as he is. Along with Prekop, guitarist Archer Prewitt, bassist Eric Claridge, and drummer John McEntire round out the rest of The Sea and Cake. Out of those four, [...]

We made it out to the Digital Life convention this weekend. It was such a scene. Felt a little like ComiCon , minus the D&D costumes. We packed a few backpacks full of Jinx.com clothing and headed out to a land of geekdom. Overall, I was impressed with the future of video gaming. The fan favorite was definitely Guitar Hero 2 . Each of the 8 booths were stacked with 30+ minute lines so I didn't get in on the action, but those who had a plastic guitar in [...]

I might as well call this "the continuing trend of me posting about bands from Chicago." Yes, I am using this Flashback post to talk about yet another great Chicago band. Perhaps you may have heard of them from awhile back. In the days where post-rock was just in its infant stages, one band was helping to push the movement forward at all costs. Yes, it wasn't quite the post-rock of today, with bands like Sigur Ros or Mogwai, but from their eponymous debut album, The Sea and Cake infused pop rock, jazz, soul, and even a bit of Krautrock [...]
