While The Sea Navy is very much a Seattle band, I'll never be able to separate singer/guitarist Jay Cox from Boston in my brain. Though he moved away a number of years ago, I still expect to see him at the same shows I go to, just as I used to a decade ago when I first got here. He was that increasingly-familiar face in the crowd at all the good gigs, then suddenly one night he was up on stage

Tom Pfaeffle ::: photo courtesy of Jay Cox We were deeply saddened to hear that local sound engineer and teacher Tom Pfaeffle was tragically killed Friday night. Tom manned the boards and mics at Tank Studio in Black Diamond, WA where local bands and Sound on the Sound favorites like Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, The Sea [...]
There's been a lot of talk recently about trailers being created for books, but this is the first one I've encountered for an album. It was sent to me by The Sea Navy's frontman Jay Cox, for his band's forthcoming album Memory Matches. read more

The Memory Matches Studio Book courtesy of The Sea Navy on flickr The Sea Navy have got the new record titled Memory Matches all recorded and mixed, and next week they're sending it off for mastering. They promised a release in March and we still might see that yet. Since they won't have the record ready to go for the reschedule of the Cops final show at the Sunset Tavern this Saturday, Jay tells me the band will be playing the new record in it's entirety live, all [...]

[Editors note: "New Favorite Local" is a new weekly feature where we highlight a local band we've recently discovered, give a quick review of their album and style, and provide an mp3 for your listening pleasure. As the title states, this is a recent favorite of ours, so you will definitely want to check this band out.] The Sea Navy frontman Jay Cox, originally of Boston, moved to Seattle and with material that he had been performing solo, put together a band and recorded Oh These Troubled Times . Released in October of [...]

The Sea Navy is a new project with Jay Cox (The Ivory Coast) on vocals and guitar, Stuart Fletcher (The Sorts, Sea Tiger) on bass, and TW Walsh ( Pedro the Lion , Headphones , The Soft Drugs ) producing (and helping out with bass, for a while). Arctic Advice is their headlining song on Myspace for a reason; the initial guitarwork is sharp and ear-catching. Which seems a common theme, actually; their songs always start off with notably dapper instrumentals, but by the end, the momentum of cool seems gone or [...]
