Despite all the critical press and legions of faithful fans, there's fewer Uncle Tupelo and Wilco cover versions out there than you would expect. On the occasion of Jeff Tweedy's 44th birthday we dig up a handful to share with you.

Wisco: A Tribute To Wilco's Summerteeth — a music compilation featuring our favorite Wisconsin artists each covering a track off of Wilco's 1999 LP , Summerteeth . I am honored to provide you with our labor of love. The state of Wisconsin is overflowing with musical talent. So much more than could ever be captured in just one compilation like this. That being said, I thought about the records that meant the most to me. Ones that I absolutely could [...]

Madison's second go around with the SoCo Music Experience went down last night at Willow Island. I thought the sound was great, GZA's Pro Tools material made a debut in front loyal Madison Wu-Tangers. The highlight for me was seeing the Black Keys once again, who continue to prove themselves as one of my favorite live bands. The Roots closed things out in huge fashion, teasing Led Zeppelin and trotting out the enigmatic Cody ChestnuTT for "The Seed" Photos below by [...]

While the creation of music appears to be the most vivid hobby among the four members of The Selfish Gene , the study of classic literature is not far behind. Apart from the fact that their band name name is derived from the title of the controversial evolutionary book by Richard Dawkins, the four-piece from Wisconsin have also incorporated elements of classic literature into their actual songs. "So It Goes", a song on their 2005 debut album, Self-Defeating Human Beings , is a nod to the memorable literary style of the late Kurt Vonnegut in Slaughterhouse-Five . [...]

The Cactus Project - Laura Cinti (2002) The transgenic "Cactus Project" supplemented the Bolivian Rebutia Donaldiana cactus genome with human genes expressing hair. While the process was heavy on laboratory science, the plants grew in a museum exhibition with an enthusiasm usually hidden within the lengthy blocks of black and white text that define scientific journals. [...]

It's not too often you grab a CD from a deeply rooted prog band named after a controversial book about evolution (which for the record, three of the possible republican candidates don't believe in) and hear pleasantly upbeat, light pop sounds with nice guitar work, but that's exactly what the Selfish Gene does. The Great Masquerade is an Orwellian view of the false identity and deception present in today's society, and even with the prog rocking undercurrents and serious, thought provoking lyrics, the songs fly by in a surprisingly light, enjoyable manner. [...]

Madison's The Selfish Gene has been in my peripheral since they released their first full length Self-Defeating Human Beings. I enjoyed what I heard on that first release, felt they well deserved their MAMA nominations and victories, but they never managed to cut me off in traffic and make me pay full attention. That all changes with The Grand Masquerade as they veer front and center and make me slam on my brakes. <!-- -->

My friend-coworker-great poet Brent passed along an article to me yesterday entitled "Poetry is Dangerous" from poet Kazim Ali: Poetry is Dangerous by Kazim Ali On April 19, after a day of teaching classes at Shippensburg University, I went out to my car and grabbed a box of old poetry manuscripts from the front seat of my little white Beetle and carried it across the street and put it next to the trashcan outside Wright Hall. The poems were from poetry contests I had been judging and the box was [...]

There is a lot of Britt Daniels and Spoon in The Selfish Gene . Throw in some 60s/70s Brit-rock/pop and some early 90s influence and you pretty much have it. Those are all good things in my book. Out on Ruff Road Records , The Selfish Gene have a new album called The Grand Masquerade . The Selfish Gene's MySpace . The Selfish Gene - Autopilot [...]
