Available today via iTunes, the ... Continue reading

Photo by John Vettese You might remember the cyclonic energy of Chambersburg five-piece The Shackeltons from their set at the 2008 XPoNential Music Festival . Or you might just be a fan of their eponymous full-length that came out on Loveless Records that same year. After a period of down time, the band reemerged last year, making appearances with Cage The Elephant and Spoon and playing sets consisting of 90 percent (or more) unreleased material. The new tunes are sounding great, and the band hopes to have its next record out this year. [...]

Our buddies The Shackeltons recently hit up Doc Watson's Pub in Philadelphia. By all accounts, they tore it up - flora and all. Our Philly photog friend Joe Longo was there, and he threw these photos of Mark and the boys our way. The Shackeltons - Your Movements [...]

Yesterday NPR had a heartwarming piece about longtime friends of Buzzgrinder The Shackeltons . In honor of Mother's Day, frontman Mark Redding spoke from the heart about how and why he always decorates the stage with fresh cut flowers: Having flowers at our shows is important to me. My mom has always had her original artwork hanging in our home. I now have it in my apartment. Her aesthetics have been ingrained in my heart. My mom was diagnosed with a mental illness years ago, and we found out that [...]
Mark Redding with Flowers::: photo by Abbey NPR's All Songs Considered just posted a beautiful story about one of my favorite people in the world, Mark Redding of The Shackeltons. The post, entitled "Decorating the Stage for Mom" is in honor of Mother's Day and is at least a two tissue read. If you were ever curious [...]

It is time once again for the round-up of the weekends musical events coming to the IA area. Not as packed as past weekends, but it is a little front heavy. Friday is absolutely loaded, before it slows down for Saturday and Sunday. Here's who is playing Friday and those going on to other regional locales afterwards: Dinosaur Jr. Photo by Johannes Scherman When certain bands get back together and tour, it's almost tragic. I'm not going to [...]

A couple of local favorites that we cover regularly are dropping new discs Friday night, unfortunately not in the same place. Harrisburg, PA's Abbey at ABC is the scene for one of the best local line-ups south central PA has seen in a very long time. Pure classic wall of sound style '80s pop is what Hershey's The April Skies are all about. Together since something like 1988, this is their 3rd full-length album since 2005 and their first since late 2006. Don't expect all new stuff though. They always break out the [...]

The Shackeltons ::: Photo by Abbey Two years after being introduced to them , The Shackeltons remain my favorite band making music today. Sure, I've seen hundreds of new bands after discovering The Shackeltons, but no band has compared to the frenetic energy, passion, and uniqueness these five boys from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania bring. Needless to say, I am never surprised, but always pleased, when someone else discovers The Shackeltons and falls just as fast for them. And that's what happened at this year's SXSW festival, where amidst thousands of bands, The Shackeltons managed to [...]

When I saw the calendar for the weekend, I initially thought that Joe was out of his skull and put down shows for the wrong dates. Then after some quick fact checking, I found the truth. Every band and their mothers, uncles and 3rd cousins once removed are either coming back home from Austin or making the IA area the next stop on their East Coast swing. With so much to tell you about, it is best to break it up into two (or more) posts). Part One (this post) will focus on those performing on [...]
In SVB's ongoing SXSW Best Bets series, we take time out to celebrate the genius of the Illadelph music scene, one that's floruished in brilliance over the last couple years. Here's a sampling from some of my hometown Philly folks who'll be town at SX worth checking out. Joe Jack Talcum (you remember him from The Dead Milkmen!) schedule at SXSW Sex Sting - Joe Jack Talcum Good Old [...]

Pennsylvania's The Shackletons make the sort of music that reminds me of why it was I fell in love with rock n roll in the first place. They play songs that were probably written in a lonely bedroom, honed in one of the guy's garages, and perfected in dark, nearly empty bar rooms. Simple songs that still manage to pack a wallop. Rock n roll bliss. Here is one of my favorites from their self-titled album that was released last year. * The Shackletons - 'Your Movement' MP3
With nearly 200 shows under my belt in 2008, it's hard to narrow down my favorites to just 15- but after much thought-here they are. I went for singular shows/sets, rather than including entire festivals such as Bumbershoot and Georgetown, which would have easily qualified for best of status. The photos are ordered, with my favorite show of the year on top and so forth. Hope you caught at least a couple of these shows in 2008 too! Monotonix at The Sunset Tavern-and Ballard Avenue (9/28/08) [...]

Dead Confederate ::: photo by Abbey Here's a few of the albums that kept me in espescially good company when I wasn't listening to my locals. (Also, when it comes to this list, "non-local" includes everything outside of Washington State, including Portland.) For what it's worth, the number one and two albums are virtually a tie. I've gone back and forth between the two of them interchanging the top spot for the entire month of December. Today's the day I decided to post and it's a Dead Confederate Day, tomorrow may be more Bon Iver-y. [...]

Mark Redding of The Shackeltons ::: photo by Abbey My love for The Shackeltons is well-documented on this blog. And while I do adore their antics and the absolute insanity of a Shackeltons show, what I love most about them is their soul. In the nearly one thousand photos I've taken of the Shackeltons in 2008, this may be my favorite. In large party because, as they say eyes are the window to the soul. In this shot, Mark's is shinning.

If you are like me, you have had enough of shopping and the holiday hustle. This weekend, relax and take in a show or two. Plenty to choose from. Here is what's happening in the area the next few days. My pick for the weekend is an all local lineup featuring the best of DC and Philly. Representing DC is Exit Clov and their 'kaleidoscopic pop noir', as someone called them. Hailing from Phily is Papertrigger . Prepare yourself for a [...]
Hey guys, sorry this is coming a few days late and is one of my only recent post. Yours truly picked up an honest to god day job, and thus my contributions to Sound on the Sound have been suffering/non-existent. I promise you, that this will change in November, now that I've gotten a bit of handle on the day-job and that best of/end of the year posts are right around the corner. Without further ado, I present to you the songs and albums that have kept me sane in this largely music-less month. * A [...]
