There may only be a few runes differentiating Canadian instrumental hip hop upstart CΛVEMΛN from Brooklynite five-piece Caveman but aurally, they're a proverbial world apart from one another. And it's that there latter to whom our attentions this afternoon turn, as the statesiders here return with In The City: set against a luscious sonic backdrop seemingly indigenous to Local Natives' back catalogue, Matthew Iwanusa's affected murmur protrudes forth like a skyscraper insistently poking the unblemished skies above. Akin in timbre to that of The Shins' James Mercer, it would surely be the apex of this particular piece were its instrumental elements [...]

There's an instantaneous allure to Brooklyn troupe Celestial Shore and that's probably for a plethora of reasons, but most detectably there's an immediate familiarity to their first composition I've really got in the appositely twinkly, and so too delectable form of Stairs Under Stars. For starters, it sounds strikingly redolent of fellow Williamsburgers Dirty Projectors at their insouciant best and features Lorely Rodriguez (aka Empress Of ) interpreting the role of Amber Coffman. Other than that, it recalls the eccentric whimsies of The Apples in Stereo and Deerhoof (whose very own Greg Saunier mixed the Brooklynites' début [...]

Animation, almost without exception, makes music videos better. It eliminates the impulse to stick the band in a garage with one exposed light bulb to let them mug at the camera. Creative animators become unmoored from the limitations of time and budget, allowing them to create distinct visual landscapes to set music against. In the interest of full disclosure, the author of this article is an unrepentant fan of stop-motion animation, so the scales are tipped a little heavily in that direction. Forgive him. 1. ![GOLD LAKE GLIMMERS WITH NEW TRACK ‘WE ALREADY EXIST’ [STREAM]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4997088_lg.jpg)
Brooklyn (via Madrid) indie-folk favorites, Gold Lake , have recently been lucky enough to work with acclaimed producer Phil Ek ( The Shins , Fleet Foxes , Father John Misty ) to mix their anticipated album, Years . Though the full release isn't available yet, the trio has offered a glimpse into their rich sound with teaser track, "We Already Exist". The song has a delightfully chimerical appeal, featuring calming percussion, glistening guitars and beautifully camouflaged vocals from founding member Lua Rios. This young, talented troupe will release a two-song single on June [...]

Photography by Melissa Scheinberg Last weekend marked Boston's inaugural Boston Calling Festival: a two stage festival right in the heart of Boston. Despite the rain, the festival ran smoothly and proved to be one of the most well-run and manageable festivals I've been to: re-entry allowed people to head into the city for dinner, no-overlapping sets barred any heart-wrenching conflicts, and a prime location ensured easy access. As there were no overlapping sets, I was able to catch the majority of pretty much every set. First up was local up-and-comers Bad Rabbits [...]

With the release of the new Rogue Wave album in less than a week, I decided to pay homage to the band's finest. With a run time just short of 37 minutes, Out of the Shadow is delicious amalgamation of hook-filled, occasionally folk-flavored, lo-fi indie pop songs. Frontman, Zach Rogue, has natural know-how when it comes to low-key infectious hooks, a uniquely lovable voice, and multi-instrumental talent that includes nearly everything outside of the drums. Basically, Zach Rogue is to Rogue Wave as Justin Vernon is to Bon Iver and it's all [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield The Shins @ Williamsburg Park After a fairly miserable start to the Memorial Day weekend , the sun finally came out on Sunday (5/26), just in time for the first show of the season at outdoor venue Williamsburg Park featuring The Shins and openers Man Man . Pictures from that show are in this post. Did you go? How was it? The Shins' current tour also took them to [...]

Pickwick 's killer cover of Richard Swift's "Lady Luck" is the cover song of the week. Swift released several solo records throughout the 20002s, including 20082s Ground Trouble Jaw EP , where "Lady Luck" was first featured. Swift is currently a member of indie-rock band The Shins .

Another crazy year of great new music rocks on, and we're still only in May! This time we have new tunes from Portugal. The Man for the first time in two years. Evil Friends is the 8th full length album from the psychedelic rockers and it appears they have picked up right where they left off on 20112s In the Mountain In the Cloud . The new music brings a lot of energy which can be partially attributed to the very familiar and well traveled producer, Danger Mouse . After previously working most recently with names like Beck , [...]
Boston has recently been shaken, and for awhile there was a disconcerting haze we all seemed to be walking through. But out of this darkness, the catchphrase “Boston Strong” has sprung forth, and not without reason. We’re a city that isn’t going to let anyone else hold us back. You can hit us in the heart of our city, but we won’t fold. You can beat us on the field for 38 to 86 years, but we’ll keep coming. And you can throw the coldest, rainiest summer weekend of the year at us, but we’re going to put on our [...]

There was no space to move in the National last night but people somehow were able to dance throughout the entire night for The Shins and Ra Ra Riot . I admit to not listening to Ra Ra Riot since 20082s "The Rhumb Line," but that didn't matter. The second they took the stage, the energy went through the roof. Everyone in the place was jumping around and dancing their tails off. Everything they played was upbeat and energetic and made me realize why I feel [...]
