As I tucked a second swimming suit into my bag that was probably too large for the three days I’d be away, I actually said aloud to myself, and I suppose perhaps my cat, “I’m going to a music festival. On the beach. As a VIP. With a press pass.” A little yelp came next, accompanied by an involuntary jig I can only assume looked like a combination of the Bluths doing their respective chicken dances. Such behavior showed up in spurts since [CoS photographer] Josh [Mellin] texted me on a cold March morning and said, “Um, guess what I [...]

Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]
Every aspect of this weekend's Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama promises to deliver. Now in its fourth year, the fest boasts an impressive lineup featuring legends Tom Petty and Stevie Wonder headlining alongside Kings of Leon. With all-you-could-ask-for amenities, including pools at the main stage and hammocks lining rows of palm trees, coupled with forecasts calling for sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s, it's slated to be a perfect weekend. Though general admission 3-day passes are now sold out , a few single day tickets remain . Also, if you can't [...]

This week I've really found some gems from all sorts of artists and styles, both old and new. It goes from cinematic to political to inspiring to dreamy, a true mix of vibes in this collection and a very strange mix of artists. It ranges from Dolly Parton to The Postal Service to The Shins to DJ Shadow, but it works in some crazy way, there is even a Pretty Lights mix of a classic John Denver song. As always I hope you enjoy the eclectic group of tunes that I have patched together and dig a little deeper with [...]

When I saw the lineup for the brand new Bottle Rock Napa Valley festival, my jaw dropped. The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird, Edward Sharpe, Dirty Projectors, Iron and Wine, Mavis Staples, Sharon Van Etten, Best Coast... the list went on and on . Plus, the festival is in the heart of Bay Area wine country, just an hour driving distance from San Francisco. I had to go. Well, the festival is happening in a mere week, and I'll be there. Find me happily sipping wine from a local [...]
"I ask, 'cause I'm not sure: do anybody make real shit anymore?" It's a conundrum up to which the contemporary recording artist must have to face on a nigh on daily basis and, to surmise, although there may be plenty continuing to make the real shit to which dear Kanye here refers, originality is all but a thing of the past by and large. You know, to state the ineluctable obvious, and whatnot... Though imitation can, and indeed often is the sincerest form of flattery, and this an aphorism Ontario troupe [...]

Everything I heard from Ra Ra Riot's most recent effort - Beta Love - caused me to cancel my pre-order of the album. I didn't like the synth-centric direction in which the band seemed to be heading on it; it's not that I mind synths, but more that I didn't like Ra Ra Riot's use of them. I said something disparaging about one of the songs on Twitter and the band tweeted back about it, which made me feel bad that I was harsh about a band that I rather enjoy. That said, the band has always [...]
A catchy Indie Pop storm was brewing around Syracuse University in 2006 - and that storm turned out to be Ra Ra Riot. Since those academic beginnings, the Indie rockers have gone on to release three full-length albums, culminating with 20132s Beta Love (via Barsuk Records). And now, in support of their new record, ...

This week is about getting back to normal after four days of lighting it up at all the fauxchella pool and after parties. To counterbalance the weekend's merriment, here's a collection of tunes that bounces around from chill trap, chill step and vintage chillout sounds…a little something to get you back into the swing of things. Really loving the Cashmere Cat's stuff right now and I got inspired by our friend and champion selector Dennis Kane's sleazed out disco jam picks for Strut Records (you can check out the post here ) and included a Double Fantasy track from [...]

It’s great when Right Chord Music alumni go on to prove that initial spark of excitement was warranted. That is certainly true of this week’s Band Of The Week ‘ Slowdim ,’ a band we first featured back in November 2011. Then it was their debut EP ‘Spirals’ now they are back with their debut, self-titled album and it’s a cracker. What’s more, Right Chord Music is the only place you can here the album in full. We are streaming the entire album for this week only. Slowdim is a four piece band [...]

Anniversary packages are usually designed as nostalgia trips, a way to give fans a gift of a few extra songs on top of the ones they've already bought at least once. In the case of The Postal Service , the famed side project of Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello , has a 10 th anniversary edition of their lone record, Give Up, to serve as a reminder [...]

It's unfortunate that The Everly Brothers aren't as fawned upon by the current generation of music fans as the acts that were heavily influenced by them. The duo, who are arguably the most successful recording duo of all-time, were known for their close harmony singing which fused early rock and roll with country and folk, and have been name checked by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to The Beach Boys to The Beatles. As a way of paying homage to the work of Phil and Don Everly, the duo of Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Dawn McCarthy , [...]
