More pleasant than being stuck in a wall to wall traffic jam, Adam Berger goes back to basics with a straight-up housey expression shaped as 'Goodbye' and a simple & effective angelic course by the means of 'New Slang.' Gabriel & Dresden would be proud. At this point in human history, we all know that anything labeled as "cool" isn't really cool anymore. But indie veterans The Spinto Band don't care much about that and named their third full length album "Cool Cocoon" . The album is indeed a very enjoyable piece of indie pop with no pretensions, proving that the band hasn't lost its touch even after all this time. The case of The Spinto Band is very peculiar since they had a major indie hit some years ago [...]

Them Swoops continue to impress with new single. Last November I introduced you to Them Swoops and their single, "Work Around It" . While that song was giving me a bit of a Phoenix vibe, their latest, "Too Fast [...]

At long last our best albums of 2012 have arrived. 2012 proved to be a magical music year for indie rockers and time-tested MUF favorites. We've scoured our resources ...

Much to my disgruntlement, I've yet to make it to New Mexico. Hot dog; jumping frog: Albuquerque , and whatnot. I guess it's the state's proximity to, and yet its plainly demarcated and closely monitored dislocation from, Central America which appeals: gorging on breakfast burritos in scorching heat – particularly around about this time of year – is a rather appealing proposition, it has to be said, and one which is only enhanced by a sense of greater touristic security, I should full well imagine. Though to turn sweltering eyes, wagging tongues and salivating glands from a culinary, to [...]

BY JORDAN MAINZER A true Renaissance man. Music video director Hiro Murai has worked with the likes of St. Vincent, Earl Sweatshirt, and David Guetta (yes, David Guetta, making his FP debut). Recently, I spoke with Murai over the phone about his creative process, his inspirations, and why he has a case of musician envy. (This interview originally appeared on my art and design blog, DRA .) Frontier Psychiatrist: Describe your process. To what extent does the artist collaborate with you or have a vision for the [...]

Things that we never expected to hear: Okkervil River's Will Sheff has an electronic side project... and it's actually quite good. Sheff released a song under the name Lovestreams earlier this week, and we've been rather enjoying it here at Flavorpill central, despite initial reservations about what in god's name it might sound like. The track makes Sheff the latest in a long-ish line of guitar-wielding types who've decided that they're rather like to twiddle knobs on the side, with wildly varying degrees of success. With that in mind, we thought we'd amuse ourselves looking at some such artists, ranking [...]

For a brief while shy indie boys ruled the word. Some might even argue the era hasn't ended yet. The Shins were a integral part to the beginning of said era. James Mercer and his band of New Mexican troubadours were probably among 20 bands ( The New Pornographers , Death Cab For Cutie , The Clientele ) that ushered in waves upon waves of 'indie'. Of course, back then they were called Flake Music pumping out perpetually consumable mixtapes. Now, they are a bonafide, globally-recognized group not only supported by the semi-cult formed around Flake [...]
Cayucas have premiered their new single, "Swimsuit," b-side to their single 73 on Secretly Canadian. "Swimsuit" starts with a bright shimmery wave of organ and a solid bass line. The song speaks to Cayucas' Santa Monica home base and is a welcome warm breeze for the winter months. The 73 single with title track "Cayucos" is out now and Yudin has been working with producer Richard Swift (The Shins, Damien Jurado, The Mynabirds) on a full-length album that will be released in early 2013. The band will also join Ra Ra Riot for their run [...]
