Last Wednesday, 08/26/09 was another Ryan's Smashing Life showcase. Show preview was here: http://www.bostonbandcrush.com /2009/08/show-crush-rsl-presen ts-larcenist.html Larcenist were releasing their CD at this show, they are a group of five songwriters that all sing and sometimes do gang vocals. They veered from street punk to alt-country in a way that made them hard to pin down genre-wise. More photos of Larcenist are located here . Larcenist Video: [...]

Sunday morning coffee with a side of overcast. The scratching of unmet goals, forced-aside desire. (How I wish I had more courage.) "Angry Charlie " - Generationals, Con Law , LP, 2009. I think at a certain point, the mind makes it impossible to keep up appearances. The band has stretched too far. It breaks, and the self-discovery forces its way forward. "Let's Make This Precious" - [...]

Ryan's Smashing Life is at it again, putting on another stellar line-up. Ian Adams opens, he just released a solo album called Stay Up Late (he previously fronted the band Rock City Crimewave) that is moody and garagy and full of murder ballads. The Shondes are from Brooklyn and I hear equal parts Siouxsie Sioux and Amanda Palmer. Rumor is that their live show is great. Static of the Gods are a powerful trio with soaring female vocals. They are preparing release [...]

Yes, the only proper place for a Zamundan prince to find his mate , Queens, will get the indie pop invasion next weekend and the borough-to-borough competition will be crazy crazy crazy, as Brooklyn sees the first-ever Northside Festival as well. The Exit 44 Festival , taking place from 3pm - 2am on June 13 features the twee-est/indie pop-est line-up we can think of, with upstarts like My Teenage Stride and The Shondes joining headliners Project Jenny, Project Jan and Tigercity , among many others, making for what could be a pretty rad, sweatered time [...]
The Shondes Genre: Rock / Classical / Indie From: Brooklyn, New York, United States Type the words Jewish queercore into google and the only band that you'll turn up are Brooklyn quartet The Shondes (you will, however, need to press return otherwise you'll get nothing!). This could mean that Jewish queercore is a genre too far or that The Shondes, who take their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace", are the only band brave enough [...]

Went to see The Shondes tonight at the Towne Lounge. It was alright. The people in the band and the people watching the people in the band were more interesting than the music. So that's not so bad. Not so happening for me musically. But did i tell you that they seem really nice and queer and fun? When I heard the title of this song, i was super wishing for Shirelles/Carole King cover. That, my friends, is showing my age. The Shondes - Will You [...]

INDIAN JEWELRY ( MySpace ) When: Saturday, September 6 Where: Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center Playing with: Thankful Tree, Dust Bunny Sounds like: "The rolling, tribal rhythms of several songs create an effect similar to being tossed to and fro at the mercy of the waves, while occasionally the momentum evaporates and the listener is (momentarily) cut adrift. "Walking on the Water," funnily enough, is a good example of the latter; its listless looping of vocals and guitar is both overheated [...]

The Shondes (their new album, The Red Sea , was one of my top albums of January 2008 ) played at The Rud back in December and now they are back for more, playing at Headliner's on Friday, September 5th with Venus Trap (a great compliment to The Shondes), Lucky Pineapple (one of Louisville's best) and Young Widows (new album, Old Wounds , out this month). The Shondes - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow Guitarist, Ian Brannigan, took some [...]
"The new Sleater-Kinney?" Brooklyn's radical Jewish queercore quartet The Shondes takes to the road again in support of debut album praised by Spin, CMJ and others. The Shondes, a Brooklyn, NY quartet taking its name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace" earned considerable praise (contrary to the group's self-deprecating moniker) this year for its debut album, The Red Sea.

We floated a track from The Shondes several months back and it seemed to go over pretty well, so here's a bit of a follow up: they're on tour! Well, they will be starting Thursday I guess. So while they're packing, arranging for someone to pick up their mail, and so forth, why don't we get prepped by spinning a couple tracks? It's got a mighty female voice! It's got violins! Ceci likes it! What more could you want from a night out? [...]

The Shondes , a Brooklyn, NY quartet taking its name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace" earned considerable praise (contrary to the group's self-deprecating moniker) this year for its debut album, The Red Sea . The disc produced by Pere Ubu bassist and producer Tony Maimone ( They Might Be Giants , Book of Knots ) often inspired critics to praise The Shondes as "the new Sleater-Kinney ." Due to the debut's success, the quartet will once again take to the road this Fall for a rigorous [...]

Tropical PITA Fay is just sitting offshore with no direction in mind and has dumped tons of grief on the Space Coast. Some parts of Melbourne have 26" inches of rain to deal with, and the Cape has had 21". Here at home we are expecting about 12", so while we wait for whatever comes to actually come we figure why not share some music some nice folks have sent us. ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ Feel Good Drag is the first single of the kickass band Anberlin's new album New Surrender. The band will [...]

The Shondes (Their new album, The Red Sea , was one of my top albums of January 2008 . They played at The Rud back in December and now they are back for more.) The Shondes are known for their complex, melodic rock sound combined with rich vocals, and a live show that explodes with energy. Their songwriting fuses the various musical traditions of feminist punk, classical, Jewish, and queercore, while their vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting, textured by the distinct qualities of each of their voices. The result is [...]
SCARLETT JOHANSSON RELEASES EP, COVERS CURE Scarlett Johansson , much storied already in these pages (postings?) for her recent album of Tom Waits covers entitled Anywhere I Lay My Head , has just released a new live EP covering songs from said record as well as "Boys Don't Cry", the Cure classic. Given the live setting, one might think the songs wouldn't translate as well without the David Sitek production touch. However, these tracks remain whoozy and beautiful with Johansson's deep and whispy vocals providing [...]

This mix has a story behind it. A while back, I was reading a post by Marcy from Lost In You Inbox about Cassettes Won't Listen supposedly contributing to the soundtrack to the newest Indiana Jones movie. Upon further inspection, I saw that it was just a YouTube video of the movie trailer with a Cassette Won't Listen song playing. I informed Marcy of this and could feel her disappointment in there not being a Indie rock filled soundtrack. So, in order to apologize for dashing Marcy's hopes, I made an Indiana Jones soundtrack [...]
As the musical world descends on Austin, we sit in our crowded office to begin the process of delivering music to those of you not headed for the Texan oasis. Who needs to be among all that live music, all that BBQ, and all that free booze? Yeah, we wish we were there too. At least EVP has some music to share to help us all get over our heartache. O! the Joy (from Zen Mode ) "The Fault Is Not Mine" [...]
