MP3: The Shortwave Set - No Social "ev-ery-one knows that a dog dressed in clothes is still a dog" A pop-song that I listen to ten times in a row & turn up a bit louder each time is one worthy of being shared. It's simple and so effective, recorded on a shoestring budget, yet they've got Dangermouse (Mr Grey Album and half of Gnarls Barkley) and Van Dyke Parks (responsible for the orchestration, arrangement and production for artists from [...]
When last this site checked in with The Shortwave Set , back in November 2006, they'd just released their excellent single "Casual Use" and were promising their second album in Spring 2007, although they had just been dropped by their label, Independiente. The London trio were actually on track to do so, creatively at least, having recorded in their home studio 25 or so songs for the follow-up to their debut, The Debt Collection (which made my Best of 2005 list). But then they got a call from Brian [...]

It's been a while all right. It was summer 2005 when the first Shortwave Set album was released and I still remember the day I bought it. Not too difficult, considering it was 7 July 2005, and the whole of the London tube network was closed down. I got home from central London to the East End by getting a boat down the river to Greenwich. Before I hopped on the DLR to cross the river, I made a quick detour into Music and Video Exchange for a browse. There was a promo of The Debt Collection [...]

I'm back. It's been a while guys. Sorry about that. But you know how life is... priorities. But like Lassie, I'm coming home. So much is going on in the magic city. WMC , duh... it got every single bloggers ' (local and not) panties in a rage. I just hope the coverage is not like this years ( over ) coverage of the SXSW festival. I think I just started ignoring any SXSW post after day 2. [...]

Part " Bent " part Goldfrapp , part Beta Band meets indie pop goodness. This track is taken from their 2005 release titled, " The Debt Collection " (which can be downloaded in it's entirety for free, but please support them). "Victorian Funk" - this is the self-describe genre of music by The Shortwave Set. wiki : The Shortwave Set are a British alternative pop band whose debut album, The Debt Collection, was released in 2005 on Independiente Records. Can you believe Christmas is only one month away? It catches me by surprise every year, even though it's hardly any secret that it's coming, you know? It's just that I can't get into any semblance of the Christmas spirit until after Thanksgiving and consequently I always feel behind the eight ball at this point. As though I should have all my shopping done already or some crazy thing like that. Yeah, right. To be honest, I haven't had much Christmas spirit for the past two Christmases. Even the most mundane tasks seemed to [...]

The title's pretty much self-explanatory. Enjoy your weekend while you can. College starts next week, so this is my final carefree Sunday before going back to school. Mix mood: relaxing/refreshing. All 5 tracks highly recommended. Amel Larrieux - Get Up (Infinite Possibilities, 2001) Sia - Sunday (Colour The Small One, 2005) Koop - Summer Sun (Waltz For Koop, 2002) Helicopter Girl - Angel City (Voodoo Chic, 2005) The Shortwave Set - Is It Any Wonder (The Debt Collection, [...]
Yes it's true that things have been a little quiet here but I'll be damned if the regular updates don't appear again from here on end. And with that, here are some random tracks that came up on the old ipod while in the office slaving away, but at the same time reminiscing about the summer and the glorious festival season that had just passed us. Still, this a beautiful time of the year and sometimes you have little flirtatious moments where the music is just so rich and it all makes it better, even if you're stuck in the [...]

Just because your debut album didn't make it to the top of the charts doesn't always mean that you're doomed to a career of being largely ignored and playing indie toilet venues. I mean, look at the likes of Travis and Snow Patrol. They slogged around in the foothills for a while before someone took notice of them. Now I'm not wishing that the two bands featured in this post follow the path of the above outfits into mainstream blandness, but I am hoping that this year, they can build on the critical success of their first albums, and attract [...]
When was the last time you were so taken by a song that you just played it over and over and over? For me it was last Wednesday when I heard Casual Use, the new single from Brit-Swede trio The...

It’s over. An ending I'm genuinely sad about. After four years or so, The Blue Room has come to an end. For those who don’t know it, it was a late night radio show running from 5am till 7am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, hosted by Rob da Bank (Sat) and Chris Coco (Sun). It was much more than a post-clubbing ‘chill out’ show. Their unique blend of house, electro, folk, reggae and indie rock was for me the perfect radio programme. It was the only one that I listened to consistently. Hardly ever [...]

After seeing about 15 apartments, we finally found one that has everything we're looking for in a great location. In my searches I've seen brokers posing as owners, landlords try and sell closets as bedrooms, bedrooms as living rooms - one apartment even had a bath tub/shower IN THE KITCHEN. Seriously. So we just signed a lease and for the foreseeable future, the Upper Eastside will be my hood. It's a great place to be and all the hommies from old and new have a place to stay when they come visit, so get your [...]

Think of Spring. Think of male/female vocals. Think of funky loops and mandolins. Think of unintentional baroque-triphop. The Debt Collection was released in July 2005 across the ocean but has yet to receive its much deserved statside counterpart. Why?
