The Show is the Rainbow (via hearnebraska.org) Six or seven years ago I went to a random show here in Atlanta at the Drunken Unicorn. It was one of those nights when I was just looking for something to do - maybe a Tuesday like tonight - and decided to see a few acts I'd never heard of before. That night I saw one of most memorable performance of that era, a one-man artist who half-sang, half-rapped and completely emptied the room of its 50-or-so patrons within a few songs. Well, everyone but me [...]

Darren Keen d/b/a The Show Is The Rainbow rocking and rolling at Siberia on June 15, 2011 The last time Darren Keen - the brains, lungs, heart and soul behind The Show Is The Rainbow - blew through town, he and the three other members of TSITR: Tour Edition were filling the balcony room of Blue Nile with his signature brand of electro-psych-hop and freakout theatrics during the 2010 Foburg Music Festival. Though buried within the cacophony of a wall-to-wall block party, the flipped-out backing tracks and the avant-garde live component of the performance [...]

There's a huge batch of new releases this week. Some highly anticipated indie records out. For starters, Frenchkiss has got 1,2,3 's debut album, DFA (though distributed through EMI) has got Shangri-La from YACHT (pictured), and The Show Is the Rainbow self-releases Tickled Pink , which has a cover that we just couldn't bring ourselves to show on this site. Don't forget Jagjaguwar putting out the new one from Bon Iver , Dinosaur Jr. 's Bug getting a cassette release, and many more. Of course, we also can't [...]
The Show Is The Rainbow + Super Nice Bros. + Rhodes performing at Siberia on July 15, 2011

Big Freedia is performing at Republic on June 8, 2011 06.09: Bounce VI featuring Big Freedia + Sissy Nobby + DJ Jubilee + Katey Red + DJ Rusty Lazer - Republic As a white New Orleans transplant in his mid-to-late-20s, it's hard to talk about bounce music – and specifically, it's gender-bending descendant, sissy bounce – without sounding like a clown. Enthusiasm for the amazing amount of attention this unique style of music has been garnering as of late is often seen as ignorance to the long and [...]

Bad Speler | Pianos | November 22, 2010 Bad Speler may be a side project of The Show Is the Rainbow , and the one-man act certainly has a similar level of live energy, but the sound is significantly different. There's a quality that hints at the early work of Girl Talk (not surprising considering that both are signed to Illegal Art and have a liberal use of sampling), but whereas Girl Talk has sort of gotten a little stale, Bad Speler still seems fresh. Check out photos from his [...]

Darren Keen (better known as The Show Is the Rainbow ) has got a new side project called Bad Speler . We're not quite sure how a one man band creates a side project that also has that same singular member, but Keen has always been one to try to challenge musical conventions. Good Speaker is Bad Speler's 100% live mix, and it's available now from the Ilegal Art's website . With more news on the Illegal Art front, the label is kicking off a contest ( rules are here ), that [...]

machinedrum - "all apologies" (download) From the brand new, limited edition 7" compilation Nerdvana , released by Mental Monkey Records . Nerdvana features indie electronic acts trying their hand at their favorite Nirvana tracks. Here, Travis Stewart (better known as Machinedrum ) tries his hand at "All Apologies", resulting in a tweaked out, beautiful mess. Machinedrum releases stuff on Merck Records, as well as his own Normrex label, and can be seen out and about doing shows with the likes [...]

Darren Keen - Slumberparty Record My Thoughts: Like () Darren Keen, of The Show is the Rainbow fame, released a short little peculiar album with thirteen songs, some regular size, most very bite sized, but all fairly delicious. He attempted to make a collection of very honest, nice songs, and I think he accomplished his goals. Using lo-fi electronics, off tempo drums, and skillfully delivered vocals Darren has crafted a record that will probably not go down in [...]

Now that the TV season has ended, the national spelling bee is probably the most exciting thing on television. The idea is to take the most socially awkward age group (middle school) and get weirdest kids from that age together into a room and have them spell ridiculous, mostly foreign words that define things like "dressing rooms in an ancient Greek baths" and "certain avenging deities or spirits". As you can imagine, the results are riveting (just remember how great Spellbound was) and there was a kid from Peoria on this year which was [...]
The first time I saw The Show Is the Rainbow , he was opening up for Mindless Self Indulgence at Webster Hall, a rather large venue just outside of New York City's Union Square. He used the giant stage to project his backing video and performed on a tiny self-built stage in the middle of the crowd. The in-your-face show was an amazing experience that I returned to see nearly every time he returned to the City. At his most recent show at the Cake Shop , I sat down to ask the Rainbow a few questions. [...]

The Show Is The Rainbow | Cake Shop | April 12, 2009 What did you do for Easter? Visit relatives? Had an Easter Egg hunt? Well, I (along with many other New Yorkers) went to see The Show Is the Rainbow at Cake Shop. The amazing one-man performer took to the stage at around 10PM to showcase selection from his new album, Wet Fist , which was recently released on the Retard Disco label. After performing solo, he picked up the bass to perform with fellow Nebraskians, Beep Beep. [...]

...we've been very fortunate over the last few months to come in contact with some great touring bands through The Buddha Den. In many cases, we've been able to arrange tour stops in Dayton. Last night at South Park Tavern was another great example. Opening the evening, The Happy Planets and his unwavering belief in the possibilities of making it happen in Dayton got the party off on a supergood foot, despite some early jabs at fellow Daytonian bands. Next up, The Show Is The Rainbow kicked off an Omaha-to-Dayton double dose and delivered [...]

Recommended show: THE SHOW IS THE RAINBOW @ CAKE SHOP 152 Ludlow Street New York, NY 10002 Tons of good shows in the City tonight, but I had to lean towards The Show Is the Rainbow, who play a solo set and also along with his band, Beep Beep, at the Cake Shop. TSITR's performance is completely in your face and perfect for the tight skinny Lower East Side space. Some of the other amazing shows below: Maria Taylor @ Bell House Genghis Tron @ Public Assembly Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Santos [...]

...we apologize for the lack of activity around these parts as of late, but we're still here and kicking. Mostly. Anyway, you've a great show over at South Park Tavern tonight we highly recommend checking out. Out on tour in support of their new album, Enchanted Islands (out on Saddle Creek ), Omaha's Beep Beep will be making a stop in Dayton tonight. One member of the band will also be doing a solo set under the moniker of The Show Is the Rainbow . You'll get local [...]
