by MOJOPHENIA

"Gold Star came to fruition when Lucinda Williams asked the frontman of 'The Sister Ruby Band', Marlon Rabenreither, to be the solo supporting act for one of her acoustic shows. Rabenreither's foray into retrospective melancholy looks through the prism of acoustic American music with an unapologetic vulnerability and an eye towards loss and heartbreak. Gold Stars self-titled debut EP was released on March 5, 2013 and is an organic collection of songs within a stripped-down sonic environment; it fuses acoustic simplicity and warm harmonies with deconstructed Americana elements and intertwines intricate finger-picking with ambient organ, wurlitzer and steel guitar, all [...]

by Buzz Bands

Singer-guitarist Marlon Rabenreither's work in the Sister Ruby Band is the stuff that outlasts trends, psychedelic Americana that's rich in texture and songcraft. So it's no surprise that, stripped-down, Rabenreither's songs seem more than the sum of their parts. Under the name Gold Star , the former art-schooler is releasing a five-song EP of lightly orchestrated twang next week; its gorgeous simplicity belies the push and pull of melancholy and hope in Rabenreither's songs. He first undertook the project after the legendary Lucinda Williams invited him to do an opening acoustic set at one of her shows. [...]

by The Deli Magazine

The Sister Ruby Band is the brainchild of 22-year-old art student, Johnny Ruby. At times, Ruby's warbling wall of sound screams of the reverb-drenched psych-rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and at others, his grizzled folk sounds like a younger Cass McCombs. These influences are evident on the band's debut record, In Cold Blood, which is a solid collection of songs that showcases the singer/songwriter's ability to write meticulous, shimmering psych-rock.
