You know those lazy Sunday afternoons when you're lying in bed with the sun shining in and you're still kinda sleepy and you know the weekend's almost over but you don't really care because you're content in this moment and oh my goodness this bed has never felt comfier? Yeah. This album is the soundtrack to that. The Six Parts Seven are not new. In fact, they've been on hiatus since 2008, and to that I say, wtf guys? But the instrumental band's 2004 release Everywhere and Right Here is so thoughtfully and delicately put together, that maybe the [...]

If you have been paying any attention to what I've written over the past year, you'll know of my great affection for Pedro the Lion/David Bazan. I'm sure I've beaten that horse dead. But then this past weekend I discovered a "Pedro" song that I hadn't heard before, and I have to talk about it. Back [...]

While combing through some new releases on my desk I came to enjoy Tim Williams ' Careful Love over the past few weeks. The album was written in the aftermath of Williams recovering from open-heart surgery and the reflections and hope of such an experience shine through on first listen. I talked to TIm about some albums that have been meaningful to him, including ones that helped him on his way to recovery. Fionn Regan | The End of History If [...]

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars Drummer is a five-piece band comprised of Ohio-based drummers who shed their primary instrument (well all but one) to form a super group of, well, Ohio-based drummers (is that a thing?). The most notable member of the band is bass player (first time that has ever been said), Patrick Carney , whose day job is providing beats for The Black Keys . The other four drummers that make up the rest of, um, Drummer have spent time in the bands Teeth of Hydra, Party of Helicopters [...]

For some reason, I am still surprised when I find really phenomenal bands who come up out of the Midwest. I don't know why this is given the fact that we are even surrounded by really phenomenal music right here in this town from the obvious MMJ and VHS or Beta to artists that are just a little lesser known but wholly established like Ben Sollee or Lucky Pineapple. That being said, I was introduced to a band from Fort Wayne, IN when I was filling in on bass duties for a friend's tour and that band was Metavari. [...]

promo photo by Kim Black P4k reports that Iron & Wine ( myspace ) will be releasing a 2 CD/ 3 LP b-side and rarity collection called Around the Well on May 19 (on subpop, of course). I wasn't too excited about his latest, Shepard's Dog , but I've been collecting rarities of his for almost as long as I've known about his music. One of the songs slated to be on the album is one Iron & Wine song that I'll always be in [...]

I'm a pretty big fan of instrumental music. I find it to be good music to listen to while doing homework or reading and I've been doing a lot of that recently so I've compiled a little playlist of some of my favorite instrumentals. I'm mostly focusing on "indie" types of instrumentals ranging from folk to electronic. Some songs are from bands that are exclusively instrumental while others are just one of the few instrumental songs that a band has (many are aptly named "Instrumental"). Sometimes I like to let the music speak for itself and in this case that's [...]

another year, another 12 days already passed without a post. i guess the lack of time to put into sand is overrated may never change, and there's not much i can do about it but accept it. . but as a final goodbye to last year, here are two albums that just missed my top 10 albums for the year. . both are instrumental outfits, one driven by fierce electric guitars and the other gently prodded by mellow acoustic guitars. both are flavors for mood enhancers, one a spicy kick to excite the heart, the other [...]
Posted by Matt: It's really just what the title says folks, ten songs that I like a whole bunch at the moment...as for the picture of Friday The 13th era Jason Vorhees, not even I can really explain that. I'm a man driven by impulse ladies and gentlemen, and today my impulse was to put that picture in this post. It may not make a bunch of sense, but when the muse comes calling... Anyway, year end lists are popping up everywhere, and the pressure is on in the TFD [...]

Six Parts Seven live: a step up from Ikea? Six Parts Seven Richard Buckner Mercury Lounge July 10, 2007 By Ben Westhoff Six Parts Seven—five guys in T-shirts and various stages of beards, and a female clarinetist (no T-shirt, no beard)—are an indie-rock jam band. At least, that's the vibe the group's banjo player gave off, shuffling across the Mercury Lounge's stage in bare feet and cut-offs. Actually, you may know this band from Kent, [...]

Its instru-mental! As the thunder, lightning, hail, monsoon, typhoon, hurricaine and rain continue to belt this tiny island into oblivion its time to get on with the instrumental. Thomas Newman is top of my people list today, not simply because we watched Little Children, which features his work, but because my iTunes shuffle still surprises me to this day. Thomas Newman is one of the finest soundtrack composers out there, cousin to Randy (I never knew that till now) he has put in music what sometimes cannot be expressed in visual terms. [...]

I thought I'd try and cash in on all of the hype around the iPhone by making an iButt. I mean I love butts. I love looking at them and making stupid butt jokes. Who doesn't? So this should be a guaranteed moneymaker! I even got that patented cool Apple white color. You might want to check out some of my prototype models, which were based on GI Joe . He was a Real American Hero. [...]

In 2003, Six Parts Seven released Lost Notes from Forgotten Songs on Suicide Squeeze . After owning Casually Smashed to Pieces , the groups brilliant 2007 release, I've been working my way backwards through their body of work and uncovering gem after gem along the way. Lost Notes from Forgotten Songs found Six Parts Seven inviting some of their favorite musicians to add lyrics to an already assembled string of instrumental tracks bringing about some of [...]
