As Motown had the Funk Brothers —the incredibly talented Detroit session band that played on the label's every hit, from "My Girl" to "Tears of a Clown"—Jamaica and ska music had The Skatalites . A group of extraordinary jazz musicians that included players like saxophonist Tommy McCook and trombonist Don Drummond, the Skatalites were one of Jamaica's first and finest ska bands, recording with vocalists like Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals. Plus , also released as Skatalite! , is the fifth release by producer Duke Reid 's Treasure [...]

This series has noted a couple of hundred musicians' deaths. Not many have caused me so much sadness as that of Gil Scott-Heron. Never mind that the man was a drug addict, and that he once wrote a homophobic song. He was a poet, and he set his poetry to glorious music. He was the Bob Dylan of the ghetto. I hope that with his dying breath, Scott-Heron appreciated the fact that astronauts were just then making a final journey and the US president has introcuded health care reform he was demanding in Whitey On The Moon). As [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Lloyd Knibb , a Jamaican-born drummer who pioneered and, in some ways, engineered ska music, passed away on Thursday, May 12, according to media reports. He was 80 years old. Knibb was a founding member of the Skatalites , ska music's most legendary band and certainly the genre's most influential. They formed in 1964 and were together for just 18 months, initially -- but during that time, they played gigs almost every night and recorded almost every day. Many of those recordings were uncredited or else [...]

The 123 Reggae 'discomix' was an invention of the mid 70s. Until then dubs or versions had been released (largely) as the B-sides of 73 singles. Then someone noticed that Disco tracks were being released in the USA and UK on a 123 vinyl format, creating a louder sound and potentually longer track lengths. Suddenly there was room for the original and a dub/version on the same side. And it didn't take long to work out that the two could be combined to form a joined-up, continuous 'discomix'. Which effectively offered the best of both worlds - vocalised song and dance work-out - without the bother [...]

The Skatalites Meet King Tubby - Herb Man Dub Making reggae weekend into a long weekend. Nevermind that song title. But you best be crazy if you think if the Skatalites were playing that it wouldn't be an amazing night.

Last night I discovered that I have three very different and totally awesome versions of The Beatles' harmonica-pop gem from A Hard Day's Night - "I Should Have Known Better." It should go without saying that version 1 is, of course, the original. Version 2 is a great duet, by She & Him, who will be performing at the 2010 Lou Fest on August 29th in St. Louis. M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel alternate vocal lines over a laid-back, galloping beat with Hawaiian-inspired guitar slides. Totally different take on a classic track. [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Groundbreaking rocksteady guitarist Lynn Taitt -- who played on influential records by the Skatalites, Derrick Morgan and Desmond Dekker passed away last Wednesday, according to the Jamaica Gleaner . Taitt, who was 75 and a Montreal resident, succumbed to cancer. Born Nerlyn Taitt in San Fernando, Trinidad, he picked up guitar in the early 1960s -- when he was well into his 20s -- first heading to Jamaica in August 1963 to perform at a gig arranged by the legendary Byron [...]

Jerk is a method of cooking meats that comes from the original inhabitants of Jamaica, the Arawaks. They roasted meats over fires of pimento wood from the allspice tree. Pimento wood gave a distinctive flavor to the meat and is still used for jerk grilling in Jamaica. Jerk marinades and rubs are often quite spicy with Scotch bonnet peppers. Recipes vary widely, but true jerk seasoning contains allspice. This recipe is for chicken, but pork, goat and even fish are also jerked. [ Recipes ]. " TGIF ! " 01. Laurel Aitken [...]

"Bellevue Special" b/w "Up and Down" has apparently been so sought after that a Japanese label reissued the single from Skatalites' trombonist Don Drummond. It's not at all detached from the Skatalites' catalog, but for the collector geek in you, COP IT . Spotted over at Dance Crasher ...

The Skatalites, "Christine Keeler"
I can't read Portuguese and translating THAT page yielded some muddled English phrasing. Either way, though, what follows is a half hour of the Skatalites working out some classics. And even if the band doesn't count too many original members at this point, the ones that remain make it count...

Johnny Osbourne , like many of his countrymen, emigrated to Toronto during the '70s. Osbourne's relocation came after a short stint as lead singer of The Wildcats in 1967 and upon his arrival in Toronto, the singer fell in with other transplanted Jamaican musicians that coalesced around Thunder Sound Studio. During his time in there, Osbourne released a number of singles as well as recording an album with Ishan People . Moving back to Jamaica in '79, Osbourne began recording for Coxsonne Dodd what would become Truths and [...]

He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete. - The Great Gatsby A contagious and cascading spiral of credit disintermediation, credit contraction, sharp fall in asset prices and sharp widening in credit [...]
Trumpeter Johnny "Dizzy" Moore, one of the founding members of the Jamaican ska/reggae outfit the Skatalites, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Moore, along with saxophonists Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso and trombonist Don Drummond, formed the band in 1964; it broke up a little more than a year later, but its influence spread far and wide. Moore became a fixture of the session-musician scene, appearing on albums by the likes of Bob Marley and Lee "Scratch" Perry, and he also played with the band briefly after it reformed in 1986. He was 70. (The Skatalites' [...]
