The first time I went to The Ave (also known as Seattle's University Way) was around 1984 on a road trip from suburbia in search of the famed record store Cellophane Square. I parked my parent's big ass Ford Country Squire green station wagon with some difficulty blocks away and headed over to do some record shopping. This was when I first laid eyes on a guy I'd later find out was named Slats. He was possibly the skinniest guy I've ever seen, in super pegged black pants, with '80s metal hair leaping out from under a big black hate [...]

Anybody remember this pic I snapped during Champagne Champagne's Block Party set (or rather, their Cha Cha set during the Block Party)? I thought it was pretty hilarious. Yes, the most famous "Hillebrity" had t-shirts floating around (surely not his doing). And if you search hard enough, you can find somebody with that same image as a tattoo. I never met the guy known as Slats (born Chris Harvey), but saw him around quite a bit. I think the first time I took notice [...]

To one of the longest lasting Hipsters in Seattle, Goodbye Slats

Second part of SXSW 2007 punk list. This one has fare more gothic metal feel to it. Not my usual flavor, but the dark gothic is really pleasant, in romantic sort of way. (Femur and Los Llamarada) I hope you enjoy this rather long punk list. I don't mind using this for drinking soundtrack. " SXSW 2007. Shiny Punk with Late Night Sweet " 01. El Jesus de Magico : New Moses (Columbus, OH) 02. Carbonas : Phone Booth (Atlanta, GA) 03. CPC Gangbangs [...]

Picking mp3s ain't rocket science. There's no methodology. I don't pick tracks to be popular on the tops of the blog charts. I don't plan ahead that often. I have a ginormous music library with tracks picked up from my web journeys and when time comes to start blogging I find something that fits my mood. This morning, I was listening to KEXP at my desk, and heard an old cut by The Buzzcocks. It hit that sweet spot I have for early UK punk. So, naturally, when it came time to dig [...]

The Slats come on like The Grifters crossed with Mitch Mitchell-era Guided By Voices , all tangled up in distorted vocals and big guitars. Like GBV, they're from the Midwest (Minnesota and Iowa,) and they play with the abandon of a McLusky , but with the sincerity of an Art Brut . While I'm lazily tossing out a lot of band names, might as well get these one's in: [...]

I know it's lazy of me to make this kind of comparison, but I can't quite help myself. The Slats are a cross between The Cars and early Clash, an unlikely melding of new wave pop and garage punk. The...
