It looks like Terry Gilliam may have gotten a hold of the album artwork before it was finished... Following up just a bit more on my trip to Austin last week, I wanted to feature something with Ian McLagan, the keyboard legend who was a major part of the Small Faces and then a co-founder of the Faces, playing alongside Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones, and who played with the Rolling Stones and many other artists along the way. For something like 30 years, McLagan has lived in Austin, having [...]

Crystal Seagulls bill themselves as a new London-based four piece Brit Rock band whose music holds a mixture of the infectious sounds of the Sixties, the swagger of the Nineties whilst simultaneously paving the way for a whole new style of music. Brave words but do they live up to their swag? [...]
Members of the latest class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Small Faces put out their most ambitious album in 1968 - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake . The psychedelic concept album is not only their best, but it pops up on many "best of" lists, particularly in the United Kingdom. Here, bassist Ronnie Lane takes the lead vocals on "Song Of A Baker," with help on vocals and guitar from the great Steve Marriott. That's Kenney Jones on drums, and although we don't get a good view of him, our friend (and fellow Texas [...]
(Volume 14 of Clifton’s Corner. Every other week on the blog Clifton Weaver, aka DJ Soft Touch, shares some of his favorite spins, old and new, in the worlds of soul, r&b, funk, psych and beyond.) The past month has been devastating for the music world. We’ve lost musical giants such as MCA of the [...]
Great documentary on Ronnie Lane now streaming on Netflix. Link.

For a band whose original lineup’s recorded output only spanned four years, managed to leave behind an impressively rich and diverse discography. Now, the band’s Small Faces (Decca, 1966), From the Beginning , Small Faces (Immediate, 1967), and Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake are being re-released by Universal Music. When listened to in chronological order, these four albums tell the story of a band whose output remained remarkably consistent and enjoyable even as its sound changed with the times, from stomping R'n'B covers to tripped out psychedelic rock. Like The Stones, The Who, [...]

There are two really cool things about Austin, Texas, that maybe you don't know: 1. This weekend, an Austin resident will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That would be Ian McLagan, keyboardist for the legendary Small Faces and the Faces. McLagan, who has made Austin his home for about 10 years, will be in Cleveland to accept the induction along with surviving Small Faces mate Kenney Jones and Faces mates Ron Wood and Rod Stewart. They'll all pay tribute to fallen band members Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott. And the other [...]

Drummer Kenney Jones spilled the beans about the Faces' possible reunion in a recent interview with Music Radar. "We all had dinner about [...]

We are more than chuffed to be offering up the first viewing of Paradise's new video for Diary Of An Old Soul , the title track and one of the highlights from their inspired album of vintage garage rock that hits stores soon. We first streamed the song last month describing it then as ' authentically primal, so reverential in its steady blues chug and psych-pop overcoat that is should come with a “If found, please return to the 60s” sticker. ' Thankfully the video more than does the song justice, reverentially based [...]

In addition to a veteran acts like "Mellow Yellow" crooner Donovan, the late (and quite prolific) singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and '60s "Itchykoo Park" hit-makers Small Faces, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame will be inducting a trio of pioneering '80s acts in 2012: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys and Guns N' Roses. The past year was a big one for the Chili Peppers. In addition celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal, breakthrough alt rock album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (which contained Grammy-winning "Give It Away" and [...]

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland announced yesterday its 2012 class of inductees, and it includes the rockin' British quintet the Faces. Finally! The Faces rocked the late 1960s and early 1970s like no one else, including the Rolling Stones. First known as the Small Faces, the core group of keyboardist Ian McLagan, bassist Ronnie Lane and drummer Kenney Jones found themselves at a crossroads when lead singer Steve Marriott left the group. Salvation came in the form of two new members: guitarist Ron Wood and singer Rod Stewart. So in 1970 the [...]
Midterms finally came to an end; and when we collectively wandered bleary-eyed out of the depths of Lau, we realized autumn was upon us. Just as we began wrapping ourselves up in jackets and scarves and digging into our favorite pumpkin-flavored goodies, we found the leaves had changed and fallen and mid-November was here already. We were late for fall. But a few leaves are still clinging to the branches, and autumn's got at least one more weekend of clear blue skies and crisp temperatures left in it. WGTB suggests you savor it while you can, and we made you [...]

This morning, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced its nominees for 2012 induction. This year, we've got some intriguing new names on the list, including Guns N' Roses, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric B. & Rakim, and Joan Jett And The Blackhearts. It also includes a few artists who have previously been nominated, including the Beastie Boys and Donna Summer. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after releasing a single or album, and only eight of the 15 nominees will actually make it into the Hall. And as silly as this whole [...]
