Arizona duo The Smiles and Frowns make simple yet beautiful folk-pop, and 'Cornelius' (released summer 2010) is no exception. With endearing vocals and sweet guitars, it enchants its way into your heart, as friendly and familiar as a hug from a best friend. The band are not pushing any boundaries, but the sincerity and simplicity are a winning combination. 'Cornelius is taken from The Smiles and Frowns' self-titled debut album, out now on Akoustik Anarkhy Recordings. The Smiles and Frowns - Cornelius

Today's post features two bands/artists that both come from very different locations and distant from myself. Thinking of other locations this morning I guess. The first song from Phoenix, Arizona is actually a bit more "up tempo" but it totally catches your ear and brings back thoughts of simpler times and maybe is just relaxing as much as it is "folk-pop". I dunno, it immediately feels familiar, not in a copyright-infringing way but in a warm like weekend morning in bed. Something like that. People, I provide you with The Smiles and [...]

"Cornelius" - The Smiles and Frowns I've been eating up lo-fi music recently. And if you hand me some lo-fi that is reminiscent of The Beatles, there's a likely chance that I'll consider it gourmet. So it is, I'm being served a Five-Star meal today by The Smiles and Frowns . If Falade is trying to get you sloppy auditory wasted , I'm trying to cure your hangover. The Smiles and Frowns are making me feel a [...]

I don't make a habit of digging for contemporary psych-pop obscurities, particularly not with groups doped up enough to name themselves, The Smiles & Frowns . But I am vulnerable and open-minded when a song is described to me as channeling, "White Album-era Beatles, Syd Barrett, Oliver Postgate, Curt Boettcher and 60s West Coast pop." "Cornelius" does just those things. The sort of summery mixtape track that will get heavy burn for a few weeks and be re-discovered several years later and sound good again. Nothing fancy. I also am pretending that the title refers to [...]
" The Smiles & Frowns are a duo from Phoenix, Arizona who wind away their day-ze making imaginative psych folk pop that reminds us of White Album era Beatles, Syd Barrett, Oliver Postgate, Curt Boettcher and 60s West Coast pop. Basically what Jim Noir would sound like if he were bored in the desert rather than his bedroom in rainy Manchester. The debut album is out 16th Aug on Manchester DIY label aA Recording and it's also their 50th release." Here's a taster [ The Smiles & Frowns - Cornelius ] Buy Smiles [...]

The Smiles & Frowns are a duo from Phoenix, Arizona whowill release their debut album late this summer (Aug. 16) on the Manchester-based DIY label aA Recording . Their songs are very imaginative, full of fun psychedelic fantasy- stories of the kind you find on Syd Barrett's albums/the first Pink Floyd-albums, The Beatles "White album" etc.. Musically, they're not too different from the artists mentioned. Very melodic and very 60s in everything they do. Here's my favourite from the album (and there are more songs of the same quality as this one on their [...]
This is the best thing that has happened to my cochleas in a long time. The Smiles And Frowns '09 self-titled is a collection of terrifically whimsical, jangly pop tunes that scream 1960s. It's got that Magical Mystery Tour charm to it, with songs that tell well-crafted stories of fantastical characters. Just

36. Wild Beasts - All The King's Men The vocals are weird, but there's something about a large chunk of this record which I find absolutely compelling. I love Ben's voice, for starters, and this song probably highlights it better than any other. 37. Virgin of the Birds - Ilona, You Should Still Be My Vampire Attendant Quite apart from the weird start, this is just a song based around a single, simple, brilliant hook. So infectious I simply can't stop humming it to myself. And he's [...]

Hello Slowcousticals, I bring you a weekend playlist because I don't have a feature post (let's just be honest here). There isn't even a compromise though because there is some really great music included. If you are a regular reader or are a member of the Last.fm group, you know I am a bit of a playlist fiend. So enough with the blather and let's get to your weekend soundtrack! Slowcoustic Saturday Playlist (November Edition) ~ Wonder Stranger [...]

The Smiles and Frowns got in touch a while ago and I was so impressed that I just went and bought their album and 73, instead of bothering to ask for a promo copy of anything. Well, sod it, I like vinyl and I have a couple of DJing assignments coming up so why the fuck not. I don't know what it was that attracted me to their sound so immediately. Perhaps it was that weird sensation of hearing something so absolutely familiar which has been oddly and subtly subverted. This sounds an awful lot like a certain [...]
