I did a little playlist shuffle on January 1st to get a prediction of how 2012 is gonna be. A musical version of Tarot cards, if you will. 1. Athenaeum - Flat Tire 2. Bare, Jr. - You Blew Me Off 3. Cross Canadian Ragweed - Burn Like the Sun (Hmmm, seems like its going to be a rough start in the romance area) 4. [...]

Bowery Electric: CBGB's Exile X-Mas Jahn Xavier with Lenny Kaye, and Tish & Snooky Here's a very special Christmas Playlist treat straight from DJ Tone . Once upon a time there was a little club called CBGB's OMFUG which was owned and operated by Hilly Kristal. He developed a home where a legacy of bands that defined NYC's underground music from The Ramones, Blondie to the The Patti Smith Group could perform. Every month these wayard punks that defined an era of music get together once a month. Punks in Exile from that [...]

In 1989 The Smithereens released their third full length albuym titled 11 . The title and the cover are an homage to the original 1960 Ocean's Eleven film. This album was their most successful owing to the single A Girl Like You. If you're a fan of Troma movies like The Toxic Avenger, then look for The Smithereens starring as themselves as they were featured as the entertainment in the indoor beach party scene of the Troma film Class of Nuke 'Em High , playing the song "Much Too [...]

Big Dipper North East rock was never so eloquently defined than by the alternative music vehicle known as Big Dipper . I meant this to be a follow-up post on the music from City Gardens Riot on the Dance Floor post but needless to say when a group makes a melodic dent like these guys did it's worth one of my retro-posts because a lot of the submissions I'm getting just don't rank. This is though one of those bands I trekked down to Trenton to see opening up [...]
I used to tell people I worked in the "social expression" industry. Their usual response…"so you work in porn." "No", I would respond, "I write those lovely sayings on the inside of greeting cards". Not quite as interesting as porn, but much safer. When the company laid me off there were no parting gifts, just lunch and a "Sorry to see you go" card signed by the gang I'd shared my living hell with over the past several years. To add insult to injury, the card was one I wrote. It was [...]

The Smithereens, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and Collective Soul have all been added to the MusicFest 2011 lineup .

Courtesy of the artist From NPR Music : The rock music veterans in The Smithereens have just returned with a brand-new release, Smithereens 2011, which marks their first set of new originals since 19992s God Save the Smithereens . What better way to celebrate than to listen to the band perform songs from its new record at World Cafe Live? The Smithereens' members have earned their living with successful releases for more than 25 years, dating all the way back to their debut album, Girls About Town, [...]
Nice weather is right around the corner. Know how I know? 'Cause so many bands are loading up their tour buses and vans and hitting the road. To which I say woo hoo! Some are doing club shows, others are gearing up larger venues including festivals (Hello Coachella and Sasquatch!), and there's something for everyone. Hopefully this list will inspire you to get off your couch and check out some of these bands live. We all need a little rock n' roll to make us feel good. If you have additions to the list [...]
Every year at the XPoNential Music Festival we introduce you to some new musicians. This year, one of those artists is Gary Clark, Jr. from Austin, Texas. Clark can sing some sweet R&B but mostly he's a blistering blues and rock artist at heart. Check out the two videos below that from a live performance he did at Bardot in Hollywood, California. Clark recently signed to Warner Brothers records and he peforms on Friday, July 22nd with the North Mississippi Allstars Duo, Joseph Arthur, Citizen Cope, The Smithereens, and locals Nicos Gun, Johnny Miles and The [...]

We should be embarrassed going 2+ weeks without posting and then returning with another MotS thingy. So, okay, like, maybe we're blushing. (The music's pretty stellar, though, in our haughty opinion, so there's that.) We thank the hostbloggers vewy, vewy much. The Posies - Dream All Day & Solar Sister & Flavor of the Month - Peter's Power Pop - That "Dream All Day" vid was the first thing we ever

The Smithereens 2011 Entertainment One Music [2011] Fire Note Says: A welcome back record armed with all new material from the one and only Smithereens. Album Review: Since 2007, we have seen an array of outings from The Smithereens that includes two cover records, 1 live album, a Christmas offering and a solo effort from frontman Pat DiNizo. With all of that musical activity it only seems [...]
New Jersey. Love it or hate it there is something in the water there that makes great American rock bands. Case in point: The Smithereens - the seminal college rock band who brought us the landmark albums "Green Thoughts", "Beauty & Sadness"and "Especially For You." For three decades they've provided the melancholy (yet ripping) soundtrack to our lives. In recent times the band have released a flurry of solid cover albums taking on everyone from The Beatles to The Who, leading us to think their days of recording their own new [...]
I thought I'd bang out a couple of pieces that have been floating around in my Google Docs account in various forms of incompletion and combine them into one post instead of just deleting them. Sometimes it's hard to find something to say about every. single. cd you like, but I'll usually at least give it a shot. These are those shots: The Crooks - Lonesome, Rowdy and Restless The Crooks are from Austin and Lonesome, Rowdy and Restless [...]

The Smithereens 2011 Album Review: The Smithereens - The Smithereens 2011 04.01.11 by Lance Burson Have you ever listened to new songs by an old band and realized they sound like the old songs from the old band when they were new? This happened to me when I played the new CD by The Smithereens. Coming out of New Jersey in the mid-1980s, I first heard the Byrds/Beatles influenced foursome on the soundtrack to an underrated 1986 movie called 'Dangerously [...]
