NME gave The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr its Godlike Genius lifetime achievement award tonight in London and he made it worth the magazine's while when he performed a six-song set that included The Smiths' classic How Soon Is Now? Marr was joined by Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones and Justin Young of The Vaccines for How Soon Is Now? which The Smiths rarely played live between its debut in 1985 and Marr's departure from the band in 1987. [Johnny Marr and Ronnie Wood] The Rolling [...]

Surely Morrissey won't be thrilled by this news: At the NME Awards in London tonight, Johnny Marr performed The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" alongside The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood . In related news, Morrissey hates meat , Johnny Marr, Duck Dynasty , Jimmy Kimmel , me, you, heterosexuals , and everyone else. But god damn does the dude make incredible music videos .

Song lyrics are clearly a popular choice for tattoos, and in the past we've celebrated some of the greatest verses ever committed to skin . But the vast majority of lyrical quotes are pretty much plain old script tattoos — we have nothing against this, but it's interesting to see tattoos where lyrics are combined with an artistic flourish, so we've gathered some examples of truly beautiful work that we thought we'd share with you. Elliott Smith [...]

Following the untimely demise of The Smiths , guitarist Johnny Marr did something quite rare for a burgeoning star of his level - he became anonymous. That's not to say he truly disappeared, but instead of capitalizing on his star power like Morrissey did, Marr quietly pulled a reverse- Jimmy Page and became a session musician. His work saw him play with a who's who of bands, including The Pretenders , [...]
Filed under: 47 Second Review Amazon The Smiths are never reuniting. Deal with it. Morrissey plays a half-dozen Smiths songs at every show, so really, what difference does it make what the name on the marquee says anyway? And besides, Johnny Marr , the musical mastermind of that band, clearly moved on 25 years ago and has the resume to prove it ( Paul McCartney , Pretenders , The The, [...]
Filed under: News Today, Oh Boy! Deirdre O'Callaghan The National has just announced the followup to 2010's critically acclaimed High Violet will be released this May via 4AD . The band (which, in case you were unaware, is the contemporary New York City rock scene's answer to the Smiths ) will also kick off slew of North American tour dates in May, starting with a hometown gig [...]

Johnny Marr's The Messenger album is out Tuesday and it's an early 2013 highlight for me. The signature stamp of his guitar style is unmistakable just as you'd expect, and it dominates throughout just as you'd want it to. Marr's vocal style often reminds of Morrissey, leading me to ponder how their many years together might have made an impact. Much of the album is upbeat, but there is a more melancholy track that will please many Smiths fans. That is "New Town Velocity". It is easy going with a beautiful flow. Marr will embark on an 18-date [...]

I just listened to Johnny Marr’s new album , which means I’m going to be listening to The Smiths for the rest of the day, and so I thought I’d share a track to accompany my review. “Paint A Vulgar Picture” isn’t quite as canonical as guitar masterpieces like “How Soon Is Now” or “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others,” but I think it showcases a budding transitional period for Marr’s guitar work. If you’re someone who thinks it’s weird that Marr joined The Pretenders after leaving The Smiths, “Paint A Vulgar Picture” should clear everything up. Plus, this [...]

Johnny Marr has spent 25 of his roughly 30 years as a recording artist not being in The Smiths. The Messenger is an album by someone who has put a quarter of a century between himself and the band that made him, with projects like The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, and The Cribs used as stylistic buffers. So it should come as no surprise that the most palpable influences on The Messenger are the contemporary American and British indie groups Marr has always championed; this is a distinctly contemporary album. But The Messenger is also an album that [...]
Radiohead - The Headmaster Ritual (The Smiths cover)

Last week, Hannah Alicia Smith aka Hannah Wants brought forth this resonant specimen of fluttering bass-house, in all it's British glory. My introduction to this house heroine came through the inclusion of her collaboration with Chris Lorenzo, " Dappy ", on the Dirtybird Records Christmas BBC Radio 1 takeover this past December. Today she released a beautifully chunky edit of The Weeknd 's " Wicked Games " which will be posted here shortly. Bless, Rader & Upside Down T [...]

Johnny Marr has perhaps overworked the 'don't listen to us, David Cameron' schitck now, and it's all to no avail: David Cameron is going to go on listening to The Smiths : In Delhi for a diplomatic and trade-building mission, he stood defiant, smiling as he told the BBC: "I've now got Johnny Marr and other members of the band saying I'm not able to listen to the The Smiths. "When I've got the complete and full set, even then, I'm afraid, I will go on and listen to The Smiths." Of course Cameron's not [...]

Words by Neil Wood The frontman is strange beast; ever-sublime in his natural habitat with various band members propped behind him, only to raise a doubtful eyebrow when that solo album finally comes around and, well, it isn’t very good. And like it or not, it quite often does come around in that fashion. See, the thing is, we have grown up with the traditional ‘band’ being a charming force; a collective of cool and a gang which we so desperately want to be a part of. And when it gets to that ‘going solo’ time [...]
Smiths guitar wizard Johnny Marr has put in decades of work with a generous fistful of post-Smiths projects, but he's somehow never released a proper solo album until now. The Messenger , that solo debut, drops next week, and we've heard the title track , " The Right Right Thing ," and " Upstarts ." And now, feel free to check out the full LP; it's streaming at Rolling Stone . The Messenger is out 2/26 on Sire/ADA . Check out our interview with Marr.
