Photo by Katie Hovland Three run, don't walk, reasons to get over to Township tonight... 1. As far as Chicago supergroups go, Treasure Fleet is pretty low-key, keeping most of its music hidden from view except for a few collage-like videos posted to YouTube. The quintet features Eli Caterer of Smoking Popes, Neil Hennessy of The Lawrence Arms, Mike Oberlin of Sass Dragons and Isaac Thotz and Dave Merriman of the Arrivals. Treasure Fleet taps into the members' softer sides, opting for a more sunny, funny surf-inspired [...]

My recent arrival in Chicago has been beneficial for two reasons: 1) I have a fulfilling job, and 2) I get to a shit ton of rock shows. For example, over the course of the four weeks of October, I made it to six shows. No two shows were alike: I welcomed fresh-faced James Blake and Ty Segall; cheered for past-their prime Glenn Danzig, Smoking Popes and Frank Turner and turned Japanese with Boris. James Blake @ The Metro (9/29) September 29 was a very eventful night for Chicago's hipsters. Due to [...]

A Tundra | Photo by Donny Mahlmeister Three break-out-the-maracas-so-you-c an-jam-with-the-bartender reasons to head down to Panchos tonight... 1. Chicago mellow indie poppers A Tundra have literally been around the block. Mostly, just picking up strays from bands like Crush Kill Destroy, Joan of Arc, Smoking Popes, and Tortoise. The end result is a musical gumbo that sounds like equal parts Deerhoof and Joan of Arc with its calculated melodies and endearing male and female vocal dynamic. Also worth mentioning is the group's penchant for punny song titles such [...]

Oh, what a weekend Chicago has in store for us all. Riot Fest , which technically kicked off yesterday, continues with big, big, big shows around town including DANZIG, Smoking Popes and Weezer. But if you're not into the insanity of our annual punk-a-thon, look no further than T-Bone at Quenchers, Great Society Mind Destroyers at the Viaduct and a few more fests we think you'd enjoy immensely. You don't want to find hell with me, mother. So let's get to it. [...]

Smoking Popes Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio were celebrating their 20th and 15th anniversaries, respectively, at the first of two sold-out shows at the Metro on Monday evening, and the bands both reflected their relative ages. While the older-brother Popes were mainly content (with notable exceptions) to forego high-octane physical performances in exchange for precision and crispness, the still-rambunctious Trio cranked up the energy, letting the band members' adroitness on their instruments fade behind the wall of sound. However, the show delivered exactly what the fawning crowd came to see: two [...]
