screenshot from Consequence of Sound There is no end to the incessant, bizzarre, and wonderful sonic/visual spectacular that is The Flaming Lips . Last night on Jimmy Fallon the band played a version of Bowie's "Heroes" wearing capes, hoods, and -- in Wayne's case -- hardly anything at all, except for a loincloth and a full-stage rat's nest of shimmering electric light tubes. The band also played "Try To Explain" from this year's album The Terror . Check out the clips below, and head over to Consequence of [...]

Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus chants, "Bring back the dudes!" in the beginning of the video, the unofficial name of the band's spring tour with dude friends The So So Glos . When dudes are together, they are wont to bring out some blue-collar covers of hometown pride. Previously, Titus Andronicus covered "Born To Run" with Diarrhea Planet, and now So So Glos and Titus team up for the Beastie Boys anthem "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", honoring the So So Glos' home turf. Watch the two punk bands fight for their right to [...]
Right now, Titus Andronicus and the So So Glos are on the so-called "Bring Back The Dudes" tour, bringing sweaty and messy punk-rock singalongs to bars across this great nation. And both bands came together onstage to end a recent set at the New Orleans venue Siberia. The So So Glos guys drunkenly paid homage to their home borough (and Titus's adopted home) by covering the Beastie Boys' deathless " No Sleep Till Brooklyn ," tweaking lyrics while appropriate, while Titus frontman Patrick Stickles wandered around smoking and shaking a tambourine. This show looks fun as fuck, and the So [...]

If you were wondering where to be every night this week, it's most likely going to be Strange Matter. There's a whole bunch of great shows coming up in the next few days. Broken Water are touring again after a long hiatus and have a show coming up on Wednesday, May 15 at Strange Matter with Canary Oh Canary, Whoa and Hoax Hunters . THe group's recent LP "Tempest" is full of big sounds and melodic fuzz reminiscent of Sonic Youth. [...]

Titus Andronicus and The So So Glos: bringing back the dudes BY JORDAN MAINZER REWRITE BEGINNING. SEE EMAIL What's left to say about Titus Andronicus at this point? At least that's what I initially thought. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that the Glen Rock, New Jersey band’s show on May 4th with fellow Brooklyn DIY punks The So So Glos and Chicago-based but originally from Brooklyn band Sharpless (who sound like some sort of Thermals/Screaming Females hybrid and who [...]

The So So Glos are a punk rock band from Brooklyn and they self-released their new LP Blowout . Unsigned bands don't usually pop up on Letterman to play songs from their self-released albums. And rarely do they sound as authentic as The So So Glos do in this snappy performance of Blowout single "Son Of An American". The smiles and outward signs of excitement are very noticeable as the band bangs out the tune at the legendary Ed Sullivan Theater. Smiles that are well earned, wouldn't you say? This is a very appropriate time [...]

Punk is not dead. I'm tempted to just finish the write-up right there: a four-word zen koan for all of you to parse over. Just pull a Mr. Miyagi and drop the mic. In the interest of being informative, though, here are some things to know about this song. It's called "Son of an American." It's about commercialism and xenophobia. It's funny and biting at the same time. It's also vicious and catchy as all hell. It's by a band called The So So Glos , who are the patron saints of Shea Stadium [...]

Brooklyn's The So So Glos made their television debut last night on Letterman , in support of their recently released full-length Blowout . The album is also Stereogum's current album of the week; it's out via the band's own label, Shea Stadium Records . Stream it here . The band performed "Son Of An American," a cheeky, instant classic anthem of our times. Check it out below. Read More...

East Williamsburg's finest, the mighty So So Glos , made their way across the bridge and into Manhattan Friday night, where they made their television debuted on Late Show with David Letterman . The band ripped through “Son Of An American" off their excellent new album Blowout! - watch the replay below. Are you all in love yet?
Blowout opens with an old home video clip of Alex Levine, bassist and lead singer of The So So Glos . At seven years old, he goes on about a topic years beyond his years, how, “as you know,” Kurt Cobain recently shot himself, “pow!” So, Kill Your Idols is a good touchstone here. Like that New York-based punk band, The So So Glos and Blowout takes as much influence from their NYC hometown as they do the West Coast punch of Lookout! Records. The bouncy bass of Operation Ivy and the unrelenting drums [...]

The So So Glos release their new album Blowout today. Blowout is out on the band’s own Shea Stadium Records, and produced by longtime friend and Shea Stadium owner/collaborator Adam Reich and engineer/producer...

If you know one thing about Brooklyn punk band the So So Glos, it's that they're good friends and frequent tourmates of Titus Andronicus, and if you know two things about them, it's that they're OGs in the Brooklyn DIY scene, having helped found venues like the Market Hotel and Shea Stadium. The Brooklyn DIY scene isn't really much help in understanding how the So So Glos sound, though; the borough is currently home to roughly one billion bands, and they don't exactly share any connecting threads. But even if you didn't know anything about the band's Titus connection, you'd [...]

There’s a comforting reliability about Brooklyn punk heroes, The So So Glos . Their dedication to their home turf is reminiscent of music scenes past like Manchester’s Factory Records or Bruce Springsteen ’s New Jersey worship. Camaraderie runs deep in the band - three of the four members are brothers, lead singer/bassist Alex Levine and guitarist Ryan by blood and drummer Zach Staggers through marriage. That brotherly combo doesn’t make guitarist Matt Elkin an odd man out in the slightest though, as the four’s interplay between each other is essential to what makes them an outstanding power-pop [...]

"The So So Glos are rock n roll band of brothers from Brooklyn, New York who formed in 2007 - A band that has taken their own 21st century slang term, re-appropriated it to define themselves and it's been said that they call themselves by the street term as incentive to combat this type of behavior. They're made up of Alex Levine, of Ryan Levine, of Matt Elkin and of Zach Staggers . Through divorce and remarriage, brothers Alex, Ryan and step brother Zach were grouped together at a very young age. In Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, the three started a rock and roll group and without fully knowing how to play [...]

You know who the most punk people on the planet are? Toddlers. Seriously. Angsty teenagers think they've got the market cornered on punk, but they're too self-conscious to completely pull it off. Toddlers don't have that problem, mainly because they don't really care about anyone but themselves. Think of the most epic outburst from a punk band you can come up with. Got it? Okay, well there's a two-year-old at an Olive Garden that is throwing a tantrum that is putting that band to shame. Toddlers don't give a fuck. [...]

Olivia Malone Some weeks, the inbox is a veritable cornucopia of interesting concert announcements for acts big and small. Compiling the blog posts that collect those up is a genuine delight. And easy. Generally so easy. This was not one of those weeks. Indeed, most of the news was of the "support announced" variety, which isn't necessarily uninteresting - sometimes it's more interesting than the headliner - but it is less easy. Anyways, we'll kick off with New York's

It's unfortunate that The Everly Brothers aren't as fawned upon by the current generation of music fans as the acts that were heavily influenced by them. The duo, who are arguably the most successful recording duo of all-time, were known for their close harmony singing which fused early rock and roll with country and folk, and have been name checked by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to The Beach Boys to The Beatles. As a way of paying homage to the work of Phil and Don Everly, the duo of Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Dawn McCarthy , [...]
